2017 Upper Deck Notre Dame 1988 Champions Football looks back three decades to the last time the Fighting Irish won the National Championship. Exclusive to Upper Deck e-Pack, the product has a digital-only base set but physical parallels, inserts and autographs that collectors can add to their collection.
Base Set
The 2017 Upper Deck Notre Dame 1988 Champions Football base set takes a different approach than most sports card products. And that’s before you get into the whole digital-physical aspects. Rather than centering on players, the 100-card checklist covers the season from start to finish. It breaks down big plays, moments and events leading to the National Championship.
Regular base cards are only done in digital form. However, there are three levels of parallels that can be delivered. Rainbow parallels are created when you combine ten digital cards. Every other pack of 2017 Upper Deck Notre Dame 1988 Champions Football has a Gold parallel. Finally, there’s a Blue version that’s numbered to 88.
Autographs
Each 2017 Upper Deck Notre Dame 1988 Champions Football box comes with an autograph. Most of these fall under the Fighting Irish Signatures banner. Raghib Ismail and Lou Holtz are among the nearly 30 signers. Select cards have inscribed ’88 National Champions and Go Irish parallels.
South Bend Standouts has a signed version with each card numbered to 25.
Rounding out the signatures are a Dual and Quad Autograph card. However, these are not in packs. They can only be obtained through e-Pack achievements aimed at completists and set builders.
Inserts
Filling out the 2017 Upper Deck Notre Dame 1988 Champions Football checklist is a pair of additional insert.
South Bend Standouts (1:5 packs) highlight key players from the team. There’s also Defining Moments (1:4 packs) that pick not only big moments but spotlight other accomplishments and records from the season. Both insert sets have 20 cards available in packs plus two additional achievement cards.
Upper Deck’s e-Pack platform has collectors open digital packs on the program’s website. Physical cards can be delivered, although there is an additional cost. The e-Pack website is also active with lots of trading as collectors work on sets and hoard specific cards.
