2016 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces Checklist and Details
More than 20 years later, 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces is getting back to the brand’s origins. What does that mean? For starters, it means that the legendary Joe Jusko has painted the entire base set. Upper Deck is also shifting the brand back as a more high-end release.
The 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces base set has 100 cards. This includes ten short print High Numbers that are done on canvas stock. All base cards are serial numbered. Adding to the premium feel of the release is the thicker card stock even the regular print cards are done on.
All 100 cards have parallels as well including Printing Plates. Base parallels take the painting of the character and ad elements to make it look like a variant cover of their origin comic.
With just one base card per pack, this isn’t going to be an easy set to complete. Combine that with short prints and those undertaking the set are in for a major challenge.
Jusko is an icon in comics and fantasy art. He has worked on several trading card sets in the past and even has a couple that focus solely on his work. The original 1992 SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces release was his doing. While it’s one of the cheapest Marvel Masterpieces sets today, that’s more about it’s print run than the quality. It’s one of those sets that gains universal praise still today when it comes to Jusko’s artwork.
Jusko’s involvement isn’t limited to just the base set. He’s also signed a few different types of autographs, which combine to fall approximately three per case (1:4 boxes). Both the base cards and parallels have signed versions numbered to 10. Signed buybacks from previous Marvel Masterpieces sets come numbered to 15 or less.
Sketch cards are a box hit in 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces. All of these are inspired by Jusko’s work (not done by him), most often using the 1992 set.
Several inserts are inspired by Marvel Masterpieces sets of yesteryear as well. These include Battle Spectra, Canvas, Holofoil and Gallery. Holofoil and Gallery have parallels that are limited to 25 copies each. Battle Spectra has Gem versions.
Another retro-themed insert is Mirage. These are lenticular cards that, in past sets, are some of the most coveted in the products. These latest Mirage cards have four images that are visible as you tilt the card.
Every box of 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces has a buyback from the 1992 release. These are original cards that have been stamped to note they’re from this product.
Other redemptions can be found for uncut sheets

When will we be able to pre-order these? Super excited but I know it’s going to brake the bank :(
It should be pretty soon.
Will the X-Men be included in this set? I’d buy a couple boxes if so.
I still have a box of the original Masterpieces that cost me $25 in 1992. I’m guessing they’re going to make it cost prohibitive to make a set. Typical.
3 cards per pack? Come on UD really? Money grabbing IMO.
So many collectors were excited for a base set again….until the format was revealed. Something that is one per pack can not be called a base card. Pricing means I will have to steer clear, and not finally return to the hobby as I was hoping.
I was so excited to hear that this set was coming out. I got out my 1992 collection and the nostalgia it brought back was going to get me back into the collecting game. But this format and this pricing scheme seems to discourage the average card collector. A shame really, could have brought many back to card collecting from what I am reading…
I was so looking forward to this set, I wanted a followup to Jusko’s 92 masterpieces since…well 1992! the title of this article says this set is returning to its roots, that is furthest from the truth. The roots of the masterpiece sets was large print runs so everyone could enjoy this beautiful artwork, they are screwing up this release ROYALLY buy making it so limited, worst idea ever from marvel, they could of sold so many of these cards but instead decided to cheap out and make it ultra limited, no many people who wanted to get back into the hobby wont even bother, myself included, what a shame, marvel should be ashamed of themselves, after delay upon delay I waited years for this, and now I wont even bother buying a single pack
What a letdown I guess I can use my money for something else. I realize Joe had nothing to do with the packing and pricing scheme but I was so looking forward to full packs and the feeling youthful excitement again.
I just put the deposit down for two cases. I have NEVER spent that kind of money on cards but this set takes me back to the first set I ever purchased back in 9th grade, the 92 set.
That is an awful ripoff. Upper Deck is leaving a boatload of money on the table by pricing out most people, with this ridiculous format.
Remember the ‘glory days’ of superhero trading cards, in the early ’90s? Quality art and 12 cards for $1.50. Something a kid could buy with his allowance. Think about that.
This sucks! I have been wanting another master piece set for years. I guess only people with deep pockets can buy these. I’m okay with the format if we would get atleast 8 to 10 cards per pack instead of 3.
Hey Mike! Where did you preorder? And does anyone know the official pricing?
I can’t believe the pricing and number of cards. Is it really going to be around $140 for 36 cards? That’s insane. How am I supposed to get my kids into this when they won’t even be able to earn enough to get a pack, much less how will they even be a buy a pack if it’s only sold in boxes and cases?! This whole thing is not what trading and collecting cards should be. Is this greed, stupidity, or what? I just can’t wrap my head around what I’m reading.
3 cards per pack, are you freakin kidding me!? Don’t you guys think you would sell more cards and make more money buy making it affordable to all the kids out there? I used to use my weekly allowance when i was little to buy the cards. Back when you can get 10-12 cards for like 2 bucks.
This could’ve been the start of collecting again. I, like so many was looking forward to this set. What will happen is dealers will crack open boxes, sell the base sets and the chases cards and sketch cards for a sinful price. With that kind of money folks you can commission many talented artists to sketch what ever card you like, including Joe Jusko. Sorry, the price of these are to high, I’ll stick to commision artwork directly from the artists.
Corey,
I called a local card shop and he was able to order through his distributor. I called four different shops until I found someone willing to do enough digging to get this done. Most shops said they didn’t even see it in their system yet.
Mike
I also called around in NY, and noone seems to have ordered them, nor are they available on their websites. Weird.
Amazon doesnt have them. DCBS doesnt have them.
Upon further evaluating the price for potentially starting something I wont finish – forget it. Too much $$$$
You know- I bought the first set back when i was ten. It’s what made a life long comic fan out of me. I bought the books that Marvel put out collecting the artwork from that set. I STUDIED them, and it’s what made me want to draw comics. I can’t even articulate how much i was looking forward to these- for TWO YEARS i’d pour over any bit of news i could find about this impending set- and for what- for this? I’m sorry, but this is awful. I don’t even know who this is for. Fans? Collectors? No one has the money for this. Please, Upper Deck/Marvel, whoever- at the very least, put out a book that collects this amazing art. The fans deserve to enjoy Mr. Jusko’s hard work.
What a waste here. Thanks UD for taking something that would have been cool and ruining it for your potential (now lost) customers.
Really disappointed with the limited run and the cost per box. The cards were printed on very thick card stock paper, but we would rather have more cards per pack with the standard thickness. Upper Deck dropped the ball on this. Beautiful artwork by Joe Jusko though.
I recently purchased a 2016 marvel masterpiece sketch card and its unsigned. The area where artists sign is blank. Can anyone tell me what this means?
unsigned back of the sketch card is usually a good thing, some of the top artists only sign the front…
the cards are beautiful and well worth the price…no problem selling out too and in a hurry, I guess upper deck had it right…
So Im supposed to ignite my sons passion for cards how exactly. Because it cant be for three cards per pack for whats being asked. I have any idea, why dont you announce what your doing and just have a giant pre-order. Like video games. Advertise it months in advance. Hell creat a face book page just for marvel masterpieces and post the link in this thread. I want to buy 2017 but not in this format or pricing.
Has anyone worked out the math on what it would mean to build/assemble a ‘truly’ complete master set. Not financially, which would be absurd anyways, but just the total number of cards this would be.
And by this I mean not counting the really one-off things from the list above like the uncut sheets of which there are apparently only 2, or the sketch cards obviously, which are all unique. But including all of the parallels, variants and different versions of all the inserts, gold foil, purple foil, orange foil, and all the different holofoil variants.
I would do it but haven’t mustered the time/energy commitment. Just figured maybe someone had done this already and had a neat table or just a raw number. :)
Ugh found out about this set too late. I had no idea Jusko was back to do another masterpieces set. Like some of you I bought the original 1992 set when I was a kid and loved it. Recently, after going to a local shop, I managed to pickup a sealed 1992 box. Was thrilled when I saw it! Now, I gotta decide on whether I want to buy a box or even a case..
Can anyone tell me what the retail price for a case and a box of this went for when it first came out? Thanks!
After revisiting the 90’s series comic cards I found myself in a rut until I hit the 1996 marvel masterpieces. All I was doing was buying fully completed sets and just hoarding more sets… which is fun to a point. Then w/ the 1996 series I was actually hunting and trying to get what I wanted from a limited run.
In the end I realized that I wanted to be excited about collecting and not just hoard. Actually having to hunt for specific #s in a base set is exciting. If you truly love the environment of card collecting then you will always enjoy making deals for the #s you lack. When collecting never stops that is when it is always fun.
so now In 2020 what is the current value of
2016 MM Base 1-90
2016 MM Gold Signature Set 1-90
16 Card Battle Spectra Chase Set
17 Card Holofoil Chase Set
10 Card Canvas Chase Set
