The 2016 Topps Star Wars Masterwork checklist takes the Force to the high-end for a second time. When the line debuted in 2015, it marked the first truly premium release for the franchise. Once again, each pack (or mini box) comes with a premium insert such as an autograph, sketch card, memorabilia card or manufactured relic.

2016-Topps-Star-Wars-Masterwork-Header

Master boxes are made up of four packs.

Base Set

2016 Topps Star Wars Masterwork Base

At 75 cards, 2016 Topps Star Wars Masterwork isn’t all that big. However, when you take the higher price into account and just three base cards per pack, it’s not going to be as easy as the average set. Short prints add another layer.

Keeping with the premium theme, base come on thick, 72-point card stock. Expect classic characters to come with different shots from the 2015 set. The Force Awakens has also been added this time around.

Parallels, which combine to fall at least one per pack, are available in Blue Metallic (one per box), Silver Metallic (/99), Green Metallic (/50), Lightsaber Purple (/25) and Gold.

Premium Inserts

Single-signed basic 2016 Topps Star Wars Masterwork Autographs are signed on-card. At least that’s how the product was initially advertised. While this is the case for the vast majority, a couple notable exceptions exist like Mark Hamill and John Boyega. They’re done with stickers.

The checklist is actually bigger than the base set with 80 signers. The also have multiple parallels. Among the signers is Daisy Ridley. Topps finally finalized a deal with the actress. Adam Driver, who plays Kylo Ren, has his first autograph cards in the product. Other signers include Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.

More autographs can be found in the form of Dual and Triple Autographs.

Manufactured relics come in the form of Medallion cards and a new mix of Stamp cards.

Sketch Cards round out the product’s premium inserts.

A couple of costume and prop cards were initially planned for the product, however, Lucasfilm had them removed.

Inserts

2016 Topps Star Wars Masterwork Show of Force

2016 Topps Star Wars Masterwork has three additional inserts: Aliens & Creatures, Great Rivalries and Show of Force.

Five parallels exist for each of these: Rainbow Foil, Canvas, Wood, Metal and Gold.

I’m sad Deep Roy is now Yoda in the triple instead of Frank Oz.

The set does look amazing though. I’ve never busted a case before and am tempted, but also wary that this could become another Chrome Jedi/Sith where they over-produce and it tanks so hard or it just becomes near impossible to hit big name autos.

The trooper armor relic is also a turn-off. I wish they could’ve gotten some other fabric like a Jedi robe or something new.

I’ve cracked a few hobby boxes from Star Wars and the masterwork collection has always been my goal to try but the series 1 was so expensive but you get so many amazing hits..definitely pre-order so all the good hits army sucked up the first week…(love the death star relic)
