2016 Donruss Optic Baseball Checklist and Details

Share:

2016 Donruss Optic Baseball takes a Chrome approach to the season’s earlier Donruss release. The company first announced the new brand name at the 2016 Industry Summit in Hawaii. More than strictly reprinting the retro-themed release on shiny card stock, the checklist has been tweaked to add some new players to the mix. Like Panini Prizm and Topps Chrome sets, parallels are plentiful and a focal point of the release.

Autographs lead the premium elements in 2016 Donruss Optic Baseball with two per hobby box.

2016 Donruss Optic Baseball Base Set

2016 Donruss Optic Baseball Gold

The primary base set has 100 cards. This is down from the from the almost 150 found in 2016 Donruss Baseball. Also part of the main set are a couple of familiar subsets in Diamond Kings and Rated Rookies. Of the 30 artistically rendered Diamond Kings, there are ten per hobby box. Each pack has one of 35 different Rated Rookies. Some are repeats from regular Donruss but 20 new players have been added to cover early 2016 debuts.

The base set and its subsets have a dozen parallels. Among them is a color that isn’t just blue but Carolina Blue. Yes, there’s Blue, too. Others include Gold, Green, Black and one-of-one Gold Vinyl, which in previous Prizm releases have meant a similar patterning as Topps’ Superfractors.

Select base cards also have variations. These have five parallels.

Autographs

2016 Donruss Optic Baseball Rated Rookie Signatures

A big chunk of the autograph content in 2016 Donruss Optic Baseball revolves around Rated Rookies. Rated Rookies Signatures come with on-card autographs. There are also Rated Rookies Retro Signatures that use designs based on Donruss Baseball designs from 1984 through 1987 and 1989. Retro autographs are also hard-signed. Collectors won’t find them in retail packs, either. They’re exclusive to hobby.

Further adding to the checklist are lots of parallels, all of which are numbered to 150 or less.

Other autographs, which include stickers, include Optic Autographs, Studio Signatures Significant Signatures and Back to the Future Signatures that focus on players with their old teams and players from the past.

Inserts

2016 Donruss Optic Baseball Illusion

In addition to the autographs and parallels, 2016 Donruss Optic Baseball hobby boxes have six additional inserts.

Illusion highlights 20 current stars with a busy design. This is the only of the basic insert themes that hasn’t been spun out of 2016 Donruss. Masters of the Game is one of those that’s back. Of the 15 cards this time around, five are new.

Other returning inserts are Masters of the Game, Power Alley, The Rookies and The Prospects.

All basic inserts have five parallels numbered to 149 or less.

Details were just announced. If you have a local shop, you could check with them. If not, online sellers like Blowout, Dave and Adam’s and Steel City should all have them listed shortly.

I don’t see why they wouldn’t be RC similar to Topps/Topps Chrome.

Not licensed by MLB. No logos.
Can’t even use the team names.
They won’t have the “official” RC logo on them either,
    for whatever that’s worth.

That Rated Rookie logo gives me all the nostalgia, remembering busting packs of Donruss back in the late 80s/early 90s.

  3. Adam 14 October, 2016 at 18:14

To me a quality product is more important than the team logos.

Sure it sucks Panini doesn’t have logos, but I think Diamond Kings and Optic are by far the best looking sets this year. Plus you’re guaranteed more hits than the equivalent Topp’s brands.

My only real complaint is the exclusion of “A” and “N” tags for the White Sox, Mets, and other “two team” towns. I don’t think that could possibly be a restricted or trademarked thing, and it really should have been included.

  4. Randy Hamlin 12 December, 2016 at 15:49

Was all but ready to give up on the baseball hobby since Topps only puts these made up inserts that are thick card stock but represent nothing personal of the player. Just a bunch of crapl

    THEN

Along comes Donruss Optic to save the day (Like Mighty Mouse).

thank u Optic for giving me something to be proud of again and yes autographs galore not one every six thousand cards like TOPPS. Bye TOPPS never again

Nothing has been announced yet but it should. It appears to have been one of the more popular NFL sets this year.
