2009 Bowman Chrome Mike Trout Superfractor Autograph Heading to Auction and Possible Record Price
Update (August 23, 2020): The card sold for $3.84 million.
The 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft Mike Trout Superfractor Autograph is heading to auction. And all signs point towards a multi-million dollar sale.
The one-of-one version of the outfielder’s top card is being sold through Goldin Auctions as part of their Goldin Elite sale. Bidding, which starts at $1 million, opens on Tuesday, July 28 and runs through Saturday, August 22.
“We have the record for the most valuable trading card ever sold with the T206 Honus Wagner card that sold for $3.12 million back in September of 2016 and we believe this Trout card can surpass that record,” said Ken Goldin, Goldin Auctions CEO.
This auction comes on the heels of a couple notable modern card sales. First, a 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft Mike Trout Red Refractor numbered to 5 sold for $922,500 on May 20, setting the record for a modern sports card. However, that record didn’t last long. On July 18, a 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite LeBron James Rookie Patch Autograph Parallel with 23 copies went for $1.845 million. Both sales also came through Goldin Auctions.
The 2009 Bowman Chrome Mike Trout Superfractor has a Mint 9 grade from Beckett Grading. The sub-grades break down to 9.5 for centering and 9 for corners, edges and surface. The autograph grade is 10. This is his first autograph card in a MLB uniform.
The card was purchased off of eBay in 2018 by Dave Oancea for $400,000.
“I won’t sell it until I can sell it for the highest price of any card ever sold,” Oancea said at the time.
Apparently, that time is now.
