Make no mistake about it, 2020 Topps Stadium Club Baseball has more than 20 beautiful base cards. For a product that uses photography as its major foundation, you’d expect as much. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some highlights worth a little extra notice.

With that in mind, here are 20 base cards from 2020 Stadium Club that caught my attention. These are only the regular cards and not the variations or inserts, some of which are equally beautiful.

42 Michael Brantley

Talk about capturing a moment with a single frame. Although Michael Brantley’s name is on the card, it’s the collective that brings it all together. Even the field and its lines could be considered a fourth player. Besides the framing, there’s also the timing with bat and ball meeting, opening up an entirely new story a couple of blinks later.

58 Jason Varitek

There’s a metaphorical life lesson with this card. It’s all about the perspective you take. Chances are, there’s nothing special about this pitch. But when you take the time to look at that mundaneness that happens a couple hundred times per game from a different angle, beauty emerges.

59 Sean Doolittle

More baseball cards with dugout carts, please.

68 Paul Goldschmidt

This is one of a handful of cards in 2020 Topps Stadium Club where the city skyline looms prominently in the background. Watching Paul Goldschmidt round the bases, St. Louis’ Gateway Arch acts a symbolic path that the ball took just seconds before.

96 Mark McGwire

For those of us who grew up watching Mark McGwire play, this card might be the ultimate piece of nostalgia. It’s “Bash Brother” Mark McGwire, just like the Costacos Brothers poster so many had on their bedroom walls. And even if that doesn’t resonate, it’s Mark McGwire in a slick suit, holding a giant bat, sitting on the hood of a car. Here’s hoping that the other half of the photo is used for a 2021 Stadium Club Jose Canseco.

112 Bo Bichette

The CN Tower is just one piece of the Toronto skyline. But what a piece it is. The only thing the low angle doesn’t make look huge is the crowd dotting the Rogers Centre stands.

113 Darryl Strawberry

The greatest Score Dream Team card to ever appear in a Stadium Club set?

128 Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

The Bo Bichette variation short print isn’t the only card in 2020 Topps Stadium Club Baseball with a Blue Jays mane attraction. The sunglasses and eyeblack only add to the attitude.

159 Roberto Clemente

Maybe it’s not the most exciting expression on Clemente’s face. But the color, perspective and action grab me nonetheless.

197 Mike Yastrzemski

Those are a couple of genuine smiles. Look at those eyes and you’ll see familial resemblance, even if there’s a generation between the two Yastrzemskis.

201 Kerry Wood

A great portrait doesn’t just show what someone looks like. It’s a showcase of who they are. Here you get a picture of intensity and focus along with that fastball grip that was so fun to watch (unless you were an opposing batter).

227 Justin Verlander

This isn’t the first overhead pitching shot and it won’t be the last. That doesn’t mean it’s still not gorgeous. You can also get a strong sense of a future Hall of Famer’s mechanics and form. You can also see something similar with the Dustin May card (#255).

243 Aaron Nola

No, you’re not having a psychedelic trip. I’m not exactly sure what’s going on with the superimposed Liberty Bell graphic, but I like it. For whatever reason, I also feel like travelling back to the ’80s and waiting for the CBS Special Presentation intro to dance across my screen.

244 Ichiro

Ichiro was ahead of this time. This get-up proves it.

245 Will Castro

This is a shot that requires not a close look but a glance. When you stare at it, Castro’s going for a high-five. It’s fine but not spectacular. Look at it again from the corner of you eye and he’s attempting a free throw with the Pepsi logo.

257 Frank Thomas

The larger-than-life, looking-up angle goes perfectly with “The Big Hurt.” And it just so happens that his nickname is right there on display. Thomas’ arms look massive and the bat is like little more than a toothpick in his hands.

270 Ken Griffey Jr.

If YouTube videos and old-timer talk don’t convince your kids of the greatness of Griffey, show them this card. The reach and athleticism are an encapsulation of when he was the game’s most electric player. The “Engery” or “Engergizer” banner seems perfectly appropriate as well.

276 Kyle Schwarber

Everybody needs hugs. And, apparently, the Wrigley ivy needs them, too.

286 Ozzie Albies

2020 Topps Stadium Club Baseball has several diving shots. Some are diving catches in the outfield. Others, like this Ozzie Albies, are runners looking to sneak into their base. The form might be more Greatest American Hero than Superman as far as actual flying goes, but the focus and facial features of the freeze are fantastic.

293 Randy Johnson

I’m still trying to figure out what’s cooler — a baseball card of Randy Johnson riding on top of a firetruck that has “The Big Unit” on the grill or his dad jeans.
