1984 O-Pee-Chee Baseball Checklist, Team Set Lists and Details
1984 O-Pee-Chee Baseball is the standard condensed version of the year’s Topps set made for Canadian collectors. While there’s definitely a sense of familiarity in that, there are some of the brand’s typical quirks that make it stand out.
1984 O-Pee-Chee Baseball Checklist Overview
With 396 cards, 1984 O-Pee-Chee Baseball is exactly half the size of 1984 Topps Baseball. As was customary, the design is virtually identical to its more mainstream American counterpart. And 1984 was a good year. Building off of 1983’s two-photo fronts, that’s the anchor once again. It’s more blocky this time around, which only helps to make it distinct.
As far as the 1984 O-Pee-Chee Baseball checklist goes, it has both of the key Rookie Cards found in the Topps set, Don Mattingly and Darryl Strawberry. Beyond that, there aren’t any major RCs.
Subsets are somewhat limited as well. All-Star cards are seeded throughout the checklist with a large clump coming at the end of the set.
As usual, the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos get some added attention with a larger number of base cards. They’re also the only two teams in the set with Team Leaders cards.
Another typical touch for O-Pee-Chee are its updates. Players on new teams may not be in their new uniforms but many have “Now with” notations on the front that aren’t in Topps.
O-Pee-Chee vs. Topps
Although nearly the same, there are a couple of easy ways to tell an O-Pee-Chee card. On the front, the brand is right there in the corner. It could get any more clear.
Backs offer up bilingual English-French text and an adjusted copyright. A little more subtle is the brighter card stock, something that’s typical of most OPC sets when compared to Topps.
The 1980s weren’t a high point in quality control, especially with O-Pee-Chee cards. Rough edges caused by dull cutting equipment is very common. Centering can also be a prevalent issue with the set. So even fresh out of packs, cards can have visible issues.
1984 O-Pee-Chee Baseball sits somewhere between mainstream and oddball. Given its noticeably smaller availability compared to Topps and other major American releases, values are strong for key cards. Still they’re not nearly as talked about.
