1984 Fleer Update Baseball Checklist, Team Set Lists and Most Valuable Cards

Share:

1984 Fleer Update Baseball is more than just a popular ’80s sets. It’s in the very top tier of the decade’s releases. It’s elite. And for good reason. Actually, for multiple reasons that come together in one pretty much perfect storm of baseball card legend.

1984 Fleer Update Baseball Checklist Overview

1984 Fleer Update Baseball marks the company’s entry into the “traded” set category. Although numbered different, it’s essentially a continuation of the earlier 1984 Fleer Baseball including its design.

Structurally, it’s pretty much the format Topps Traded sets were using — 132 cards, box set delivery, vets on new teams.

And the rookie call-ups.

That’s one of the big reasons for the 1984 Fleer Update’s popularity. Actually, two big reasons. Whether it was luck, timing or insightful checklist builders, this is the first and only place to find 1984 baseball cards of both Kirby Puckett and Rogers Clemens. Both are among the best players of their generation. Because of the limited distribution to select hobby shops at the time, these get the XRC designation with Rookie Cards following in multiple 1985 releases. This is the norm for traded and update sets for much of the ’80s.

No matter the tag or label, these cards truly are special. They’d still be strong cards if Topps Traded had Clemens and Puckett, but they don’t. It adds some mystique. Value isn’t far behind, either. While the vast majority of 1980s baseball cards can be found for less than the price of a modern hobby pack or blaster box. Clemens and Puckett are a couple of the biggest exceptions.

Other 1984 Fleer Update XRCs include pitchers Dwight Gooden, Bret Saberhagen, Mark Gubiza and Mark Langston. Seattle Mariners favorite Alvin Davis is also on the checklist.

As far as veterans go, Pete Rose is tops. It’s one of only a handful of cards from the hit king’s career to picture him as a member of the Montreal Expos.

Beyond the Big Ones

The inclusion of Clemens and Puckett are part of the equation when it comes to the set’s popularity and lasting value. But there’s another important factor — availability.

Calling 1984 Fleer Update Baseball rare isn’t accurate. Sets and singles are out there. But relative to virtually every mainstream and near-mainstream product put out at the time, it’s not nearly as plentiful.

Similar to 1984 Donruss Baseball, it’s enough to add to the overall mystique of the product. It’s also likely compounded by the strength of its checklist.
