1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Hockey Box, aka the Wayne Gretzky RC Year, Sells for Almost $40,000
Ever dreamed of pulling a 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky Rookie Card? The packs are out there, but they are, understandably, not cheap. A full 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Hockey box sold on November 7 through Classic Auctions for almost $40,000.
The paddle price was $32,818. Once the 19.5 percent buyer’s premium is factored in, the final total was $39,217. Although Classic Auctions is Canadian, prices are in US funds.
The 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Hockey box has a total of 48 packs, each with 14 cards. The box was inspected by Baseball Card Exchange to determine there was no tampering and all of the packs were unopened.
With a 396-card checklist and 672 total cards in the box, the chances of multiple Wayne Gretzky Rookie Cards is strong. And coming from fresh packs means as good a shot at any for top-condition cards. That said, the set is notorious for being condition sensitive. The blue borders, rough edges and centering all come into play.
Of course, there’s a strong chance this box will stay as is and whatever Gretzky Rookies may or may not be there will stay tucked in their wax beds even longer.
