1977 Laboratorios y Agencias Unidas Star Wars Mexican Trading Cards Checklist, Details

1977 Laboratorios y Agencias Unidas Star Wars, or 1977 Star Wars Mexican trading cards, is one of several international sets to use Topps’ iconic starfield design as its foundation.

Today, it proves to be one of the most challenging sets of vintage Star Wars trading cards out there. It’s not so much about how many were made but rather how they were made and packaged, creating a condition time bomb before the wrapper was even removed.

At its most basic, 1977 Star Wars Mexican trading cards are a Spanish translation of Topps’ Series 1 set. The checklist has a total of 66 cards with the familiar blue borders and the same images. The most noticeable difference is with the text.

Sounds simple, right? If only it were. Cards came just two per pack, along with a stick of bubble gum. All three items were packaged together with a wax wrapper. The result? Lots of damaged cards that, like all trading cards at the time, weren’t exactly the highest of standards to begin with.

Gum damages cards. Wax wrappers damage cards. And with only two cards in each 1977 Star Wars Mexican pack, that doesn’t even leave much hope for Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Traditional issues like centering and miscuts also plague the set. Put all these challenges together and, through January, 2020, less than 400 total cards from the set had been graded by PSA with VG-EX 4 and EX 5 being the most plentiful grades, accounting for more than 40 percent of those submitted. Few cards have been inspected by Beckett Grading.

So, yes, things are fairly straightforward. But rarity and condition make 1977 Laboratorios y Agencias Unidas Star Wars a challenging set.

There’s just the one series and no stickers.

Very cool, I never knew these existed! I use to take the stickers, peel them off and stick them on the back of my carrying cases for the action figures, LOL
