1968 Topps Baseball Cards Combine Classic Look with Memorable Rookie Cards

Share:

Some sets are memorable for their design. Others gain prominence for their Rookie Cards and other checklist gems. 1968 Topps Baseball achieves both. Its burlap borders seem like an unlikely choice. And yet they work.

1968 Topps Baseball Box

Add to that Rookies of a couple of beloved Hall of Famers and it’s not hard to understand why 1968 Topps Baseball isn’t just one of the most popular sets of the 1960s, but of all-time.

In 1968, America was tense. People were angry. The Vietnam War continued abroad. At home, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were both assassinated. Protests surrounding Vietnam grew. For many, baseball was a welcome bit of comfort.

Pitchers dominated that year with Bob Gibson and Denny McLain each winning both their respective league’s Cy Young and MVP awards. Detroit and St. Louis went the full seven games for the World Series with the Tigers coming out on top. Oakland welcomed the Athletics while MLB said farewell to Mickey Mantle, Eddie Mathews and Roger Maris.

1968 Topps Baseball clocks in at 598 cards. The design leaves no confusion as to what set it is either. The burlap backdrop makes it both distinct and memorable.

1968 Topps Nolan Ryan Jerry Koosman

And then there are the set’s two top cards — Nolan Ryan and Johnny Bench. Both are paired with a second player. For Ryan, it’s Jerry Koosman, which isn’t bad at all. Bench is joined by Ron Tompkins, a pitcher who played in 40 total games in 1967 and 1970, none of which were with the Reds.

1968 Topps Baseball was distributed over the course of seven series. The final two, covering #458-598, are available in the smallest numbers. As a result, prices for these are higher than those from the earlier releases. Frank Robinson and Jim Palmer are among the short prints. The most valuable of the high numbers is #490, a combo card with Mantle, Willie Mays and Harmon Killebrew.

1968 Topps 490 Harmon Killebrew Willie Mays Mickey Mantle

Backs use a vertical design. This was only the third time such an approach was taken since Topps introduced their flagship baseball line. Until that point, 1953 and 1967 were the only other years to take such an approach.

1968 Topps Baseball doesn’t have many subsets. Rookie Stars run throughout the checklist, creating dual-player pairings for most of the Rookie Cards. Other subsets include League Leaders (#1-12), World Series Highlights (#151-158) and Sporting News All-Stars (#361-380).

Several cards come with variations that highlight subtle differences. Small color differences, spelling errors and slight image shifts are among the 1968 Topps Baseball errors and variations.

FYI – the Cox & Brinkman “variations” are not Topps variations. The yellow team versions of both cards are actually a part of the Milton Bradley Win A Card game, in which MB used a bunch of Topps 1968 baseball cards (1-195, but not all of those), along with some 1967 Topps football in addition to Hot Rod cards. Look at the backs of the yellow-team Cox & Brinkman. They will be a very bright yellow, which is the “tell” for all of the MB cards. And your Lonborg variation on the left definitely looks like a MB too with the super-bright yellow.

You have #329 Duane Josephson listed under the Chicago Cubs but he actually played on the White Sox
