With so many different base cards, subsets, parallels, memorabilia cards and autographs, building out a collection for a single player can be overwhelming.

Luckily, the 10-Card Instant PC article series is here to help.

So where does one begin putting together a Kirby Puckett PC?

These 10 cards serve as an excellent representation of his playing career and footprint on the hobby, making them a great place to start.

1984 Fleer Update #U93 Kirby Puckett XRC

The Twins drafted Puckett with the No. 3 overall pick in the 1982 January secondary draft out of Triton College in Illinois. He flew through the minors to make his MLB debut shortly after Opening Day in 1984, hitting .296 in 128 games to finish third in AL Rookie of the Year voting.

His late debut meant he wasn’t included in 1984 base sets, but he did find his way into the 1984 Fleer Update set. The company’s first update set was available exclusively to hobby dealers. The key XRCs in the set have held their value extremely well as a result.

1985 Topps #536 Kirby Puckett RC

After tallying just 17 extra-base hits in 583 plate appearances as a rookie, Puckett showed more impact potential at the plate in his second season with 29 doubles, 13 triples, four home runs and a 92 OPS+ in 161 games to earn some down-ballot AL MVP support.

His Rookie Cards are featured in the 1985 Donruss, Fleer and Topps flagship sets, as well as the Canadian Leaf (Donruss) and O-Pee-Chee (Topps) releases. The Topps rookie is among the most iconic cards of the 1980s.

1988 Woolworth’s Topps #31 Kirby Puckett

After finishing with a 71-91 record in 1986, the Minnesota Twins took an unexpected leap forward the following season to win the AL West title with 85 wins. They then upset the Detroit Tigers (98 wins) and St. Louis Cardinals (95 wins) en route to a World Series win.

Puckett went 10-for-28 during the seven-game World Series, including a pair of hits in the decisive Game 7. That performance is commemorated in the 1988 Woolworth’s Topps oddball set.

The 1988 Topps flagship set features a good early shot of Puckett at the plate. While the mass-produced set is lacking in value, this card stands as a great representation of Puckett’s peak.

1989 Upper Deck #376 Kirby Puckett

A .318 career hitter, Puckett batted over .300 eight times in his 12 MLB seasons. He won the AL batting title in 1989 with a .339 average, edging out Oakland’s Carney Lansford (.336) and Boston’s Wade Boggs (.330).

The 1989 Upper Deck set reshaped the baseball card market forever by providing a premium alternative to the established Donruss, Fleer and Topps companies. The Puckett card from the set has the added bonus of a young Mark McGwire lurking in the background.

1992 Stadium Club Dome #144 Kirby Puckett WS

The Twins went from the AL West cellar in 1990 to a 95-67 record and a division title in 1991. After upending the Toronto Blue Jays in five games in the ALCS, they beat the Atlanta Braves in a thrilling seven-game World Series.

The 10-inning complete game shutout that Jack Morris threw in Game 7 is the enduring legacy of that series, but that game wouldn’t have happened without Puckett’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning of Game 6.

1993 Topps #200 Kirby Puckett

Following the 1992 season, Puckett tested the free-agent market for the first time in his career as part of a loaded free-agent class that was headlined by Barry Bonds and Greg Maddux. While those two superstars changed teams, Puckett found his way back to the Twins with a new five-year, $30 million deal that was the second-biggest contract in MLB history at the time.
