Does anyone know if this is a variation or some sort of printing mistake?  The backs are completely the same and have a B in the copyright area.  The fronts however, are different, I have one that doesn't have the blueish green blob on it at all and two cards that have the blob.  The blob on the two cards is in the same location on the card, and nearly the same size.  Any ideas?

Used to super collect Ripken FF versions. Now I'm looking for a new direction.

Finally, huh?

That starting bid is pretty scary. The variation community seems to be less spendy the last few years since that card was last listed.

It's scary that I am seriously considering it though.

I've thought alot about it. Agree on the price. Wish I could go for it, but cannot. Congrats if you do.

Saw that card too. An interesting one to say the least. We'll see if that sells -- and whether it inspires others who have it to list.

I have a 1992 Stadium Cal Ripken #1. The back of the card has his named spelled incorrectly as Ripkin. This is not listed as an error in Beckett. Although I think they are all like this. I'm pretty sure it's a UER. If anyone else has this card check it out, and let me know.

Sorry to jump on your comment but it brings up a few concerns:

So Beckett's stance on this card is to keep it priced at $10 (as it has been for at least a decade now) unless this copy, the ONLY other copy listed in the last four years (and possibly only the second ever) sells at it's $499 starting bid and others start appearing? What if there aren't many others out there?

If this is the case, that's really irresponsible on Beckett's part. I have personally 'bought' this card  from at least a half-dozen dealers on Beckett.com who assume that they have this $10 error in their vast inventory when they upload to the site. This resulted in me getting refunded each time which is frustrating and I know that I am not the only variation collector that this type of thing has happened to. BUT if your subscribed dealers saw a more-accurate price listed for this unbelievably rare card, they wouldn't be checking the little box next to #702A when they upload "1990 Upper Deck" here.

Also, by reflecting it's rarity, by correctly adjusting it's price or even adding a little blurb about it in an issue under the heading in the guides, it will result in collectors and dealers digging around through their inventory and hopefully more copies would show up, thus allowing you guys to create an accurate price for it...or just note it's existence and rarity instead of listing a completely made-up price.

Beckett diligently chased down market pricing on the 2006 Alex Gordon cards (which were more plentiful too, based on ebay appearances) but has continued to ignore this almost mythical variation.

As far as watching and seeing to gauge a price on older variations goes, where has Beckett been the last 5 years as that niche has expanded and new (and very rare) variations have been discovered. I could probably list 100-300 legitimate (per Beckett's standards: i.e. non printing-flaw) variations that have regular or semi-regular activity on auction sites that Beckett outright refuses to price or even acknowledge.

I appreciate your consideration in this.
