A Game Worn Relic of a Fan Favorite Goaltender? Surely McKenna Be Serious!?
I am serious...and don't call me Shirley!

The newest piece in Heroes of the Crease Ltd 's goalie museum collection is here. Representing unique NHL goaltender number 168 in our archive, this now puts us at 20.54% of all goalies in NHL history as we continue to chug along towards our goal of 100%

Anyways, onto the show!

Mike McKenna was born on April 11, 1983 in St. Louis, Missouri. McKenna was drafted in 2002 by the Nashville Predators (172nd overall), though prior to turning pro, he finished off a collegiate hockey career while majoring in Economics at St. Lawrence University. He turned pro in 2005-06 and began one heck of a pro hockey adventure. Retiring from play in 2019, he saw ice time or dressed as backup for nine different NHL teams (plus two additional NHL teams he belonged to, though he did not dress for in regular season action) and he played 35 total NHL games. He also played with 13 different AHL teams and one ECHL team, really making his way around.

But let's go back. On February 3, 2009, while on recall with Tampa Bay, Mike McKenna replaced Karri Ramo between the pipes against the Isles and he stopped all 11 shots he faced. He recorded his first NHL win and first NHL shutout four days later...again, against the Islanders. McKenna played 15 games with the Lightning that year, recording a 4-8-1 record. He then played two games with New Jersey in 2010-11, four games with Columbus in 2013-14, one game with Arizona in 2014-15, dressed with Florida a few times over the next two seasons, and he played two games with Dallas in 2017-18. Then, in 2018-19, he played 10 games with Ottawa, dressed for Vancouver (he is still searching for that jersey for his own collection), and played one final NHL game with Philadelphia. He retired from play at the end of that season and he is still quite involved in the hockey world today, as he hosts a popular podcast!

In his NHL career, McKenna appeared in 35 games, recording a 7-17-3 record with 1 shutout, 1 assist, a 3.60GAA, and a 0.890% save average. He appeared in no NHL playoff games.

What you are looking at right now is a 2014-15 Portland Pirates game worn blocker used by McKenna in the late part of the season. Marked with a "W/2", he used this blocker in the pre-game warmups and in the second period of games. Another goalie I have seen similar setups with was Jimmy Howard. The wear is nice, it features Kay Whitmore's initials and it is a fine piece of a very interesting hockey personality who did the grand tour of professional North American hockey.
