Hey all! Bored & up early!
I've been collecting off & on for 20 plus years and I don't think I'm alone when I say, "I miss the older styles". I was also curious to know what designs people liked or wished that would be brought back to today's sports cards. Choosing any design from any year & from any sport. And if there are anything close or exact to what I've posted, please let me know. I'm honestly just shooting from the hip here and posting what roughly came to mind.

1) The cartoon look!! Either in action or a seemingly staged pose!

So in the middle of making this thread while looking for pictures, I noticed they did remake these this past year in 2019 for baseball and some years back in 2010 for football.

2) Realistic drawn cards. Now I'm not really sure If they've done these lately so please let me know. As far as looking back at this set
(Upper Deck), I didn't even notice some had names, nicknames and or no names at all!
Now I did notice that those Kaboom & Downtown cards are sort of a little bit of an older style and much appreciated

Old School Fleer and SPx were always a favorite of mine.

I love all of these styles and would welcome them all back. Also, I may be in the minority, but Pro Line Portraits were cool to me, albeit maybe they could be less "beefy" lol. Sometimes cool to see players outside of their element. There are some players I honestly wouldn't recognize outside of their game day apparel.

And Jordan is the GOAT.

Oh and along the lines of the holograms, I liked the old Sportflix Motion cards too. Oh and Action Packed cards that actually have a raised surface.

I'm in agreement with Pro Vision and SPx, though 1996 > all other years of SPx. '97 gets an honorable mention.

Here are some others:

1991 Score Dream Team - these would make for killer variations to base cards. The different pose doesn't cut it for me.
1994-95 Topps Embossed (baseball/basketball) & 1999 Upper Deck Ovation (football/baseball/basketball) - love that embossed ball grain.
1990 Action Packed - imagine the colorful parallels on those! Plus, embossing is BOSS
*1991 Action Packed Neon Deion - it's like regular Action Packed, but GLOWS!
2013 Finest Atomic Rookie Die Cuts - the best of them all
1999 Topps Tek & 2014/2015 Panini Clear Vision - Acetate!

But honestly those are all playing for second place. Everyone knows the best design ever is......











The partial border at the bottom. The two color corners helping anchor the image. The sunburst etching in the background while still maintaining some of the action shot behind. Layer on a rich and colorful refractor tech and you've got yourself a winner.

1995-98 Pacific Pro Bowl cards were really nice designs.

Plastic card stock - 1991-93 Collector's Edge, 1998 E-X2001 - these type makes corner and edge wear not as bad.

My "Old School" is a little older than most/all of the old school above.  I started collecting as a kid in the early 70's. A couple of my favorites were the 1974 Topps with the field goal and the 1976 with the football.

Also what I liked about Topps up through the 80' was football and baseball designs were completely different.  What I really can't stand is with Panini (Leaf as well), they will use the same damn photo for multiple brands.  Just freaking lazy.
