End of an era. A tribute to the ITG "Made To Order" card. My story...

RE: End of an era. A tribute to the ITG "Made To Order" card. My story...
Ok I have scans of the four 2003-04 MTO Habs cards I redeemed but not the two I purchased (Roy MTL and Colorado).

For 2001-02 MTO I have scans of my Lemieux and Bure as well as another Lemieux, Gretzky and Gaborik.

Curt

Do you have any contact for Dr Price? It would be really good if we could ask him to publish a checklist of all the Made to Order redeemed cards. I hope he would agree as it would be useful knowledge to have in the collecting community as time goes on. I know I find it challenging sometimes if I am looking for something 50 to 100 years old and no good checklist exists.

For the 2001-02 MTO cards I have seen 7 of the cards. I am not sure why the 8th redeemed card was.

1) Gretzky NYR
2) Gretzky EDM
3) Lemieux White 1
4) Lemieux White 2
5) Lemieux Black
6) Bure
7) Gaborik
8) ??? Possibly Roy
9) Not Redeemed
10) Not Redeemed

I believe the 2001-02 set up was the only Ultimate set to ever have non- Made to Order redemption cards. There were three other redemption cards each out of 10. They were for

1) Calder Winner (Heatley)
2) Vezina Winner (Theodore)
3) Hart Winner (Theodore)

I have all three and have always wonder how many of each were redeemed. For ITG Action and ITG VIP Rookie cards ITG released how many of each were redeemed. For ITG Action even though each RC had 750 redemptions inserted no card had even half redeemed before the expiration date. (I still need about 5 of 24 rookies from it as they are not easy to find). I would assume with the higher price point Ultimate would have a higher redemption rate. I was always surprised that 2 of the first year Made to Order were never redeemed as they were like a golden ticket to the chocolate factory when they came out. The two in my collection I purchased years after (I even felt bad about buying the Bure card as I know the Bure collector was a big Member of this board years ago and it was the crown jewel in his collection. He had a good reason at the time why he needed to sell - university if I remember correctly but always felt when he got older he would regret having parted with it).

ITG has always been very collector focused. For the four 2003-04 Complete Package Habs cards that I showed above they were nice enough to let me pick the pictures of each player I wanted. I selected pictures from they had previously used. I think I managed to select 4 pictures that captured what each player was known for. The fire in the Rocket's eyes, Lafleur streaking down the ice as the Blonde Demon, Plante relaxing by himself and Roy competitive.

The reason I got out of cards for almost a decade was because they lost their official NHL license. After the lock out the only set I build was the ITG International Ice. Now I am back there is not much in the past decade that I want other than a complete Upper Deck set and OPC set from each year plus the Piece of History cards. I find I am buying more old ITG pre lock out.

I have Brent Burns, if one of the 5 you need is him. Smile

With Dr. Price being out of the business now, I don't know if he kept records of the REDEEMED Made To Order cards. ???

And very nice that you got these:

The Vezina Winner has a Vezina Pad piece if I remember right.

*******************
And you are right...the licensed ITG Ultimate cards are nice!

My big pre-lockout ITG/BAP Ultimate subset in my collection that I have been trying to get forever is the UM5 "Blades of Steel" set. I have 18 of the 21 in the subset. But I'll probably never complete it because the three I need are:

Cyclone Taylor #/25
Georges Vezina #/10
Frank Nighbor #/10

And you know how hard getting Taylor and Vezina cards are! Never say never.....but it's almost a never in this case! Smile

Example of one I have:

I have also done a lot of the Gloves Are Off (Glove pieces)... Stick Rack, and Fantastick subsets (huge stick pieces)... just because they are cool.

I'm going to miss the ITG Ultimate stuff. Sad

If someone has the contact details of Dr Price I think it would be worth asking about a MTO checklist as I am sure that information must be stored and kept somewhere even with him selling the company.

I have Burns already but thanks for the offer.

I did the Vintage Blades of Steel set but I did the year before you. 2003-04. It is a great set. I have a couple from the year you did but only the 2 players not in the previous year and not ones you need. Ajvezina lokely has the Vezina card you need as he vacuumed up almost every Vezina memorabilia card that ever went to auction. He is trying to sell a bunch now but prices are understandably high.

I was pretty hard core into Ultime in 2001-02 (251 unigue cards), 2002-03 (226 unique cards) and 2003-04 (92 unigue cards). Note so much in 2000-01 (25 unique cards) or 2004-05 (22 unigue cards). I mostly focused on putting sets together with a heavy focus on those sets with old retired players.

The Thoedore Vezina card has Theodore Memorabila. It was a later year when Brodeur won it that had Brodeur and Vezina Memorabilia.

I have 15 or 16 MTO cards in my collection with quite a few of the early ones (Curt has seen some of them Smile ). When I have the time I will post them. I have been blessed with opening quite a few of them in cases so picking the player and the pieces was especially nice. Nice cards all, with a nod to my buddy Curt for that awesome Starting Line-up piece! Smile

Holy Goalie

I would love to see all your MTO cards. I think it was one of the best insert ideas in the hobby.

I wish I had picked up more of them in the first 4 years of the program.
