Oh, so that's why my 1991 cards are worth nothing
I've always thought that 1991 was the year when the most cards were made across the four sports. In other words, the last year when nearly everything was mass produced.
Reading a '91 card magazine, I came upon these numbers for baseball:
Topps made 5 million of each card
Score made nearly as many
Upper Deck, Fleer and Donruss made around 3 million of each card.

Well the regular issues aren't worth much, but the Desert Shield ones still hold some value.

So do the Topps Tiffany versions and any other lower production run cards from that year (like the 1991 Donruss Elite Series inserts).

Check Out 1991 Donruss Preview there rare as well. Honestly it all depends but overall 1986 to 1992 were not very good years for baseball cards. 1985 had Puckett, Clemens that helped, and 1993 had Jeter. I think 1992 Bowman was the game changer as far as sets. 1993 had SP, Bowman, and Finest. Then the next upgrade in cards was 1996 with the Select Certified Mirror Gold, Mirror Blue, and Mirror Red. That is what honestly changed the hobby forever. Any new player collector good luck but unless you’re a millionaire you have 0 chance to own every single cards made of you player. I know I will never see every Jeter cards from the 90's but I will go as far as I can. But with today you have 30 or more 1 of 1 cards for each player so just with that I can tell you it will never happen.

Chris got me thinking back and 1991 was actually a pretty good transition year for cards with the introduction of Stadium Club and Studio, not to mention Fleer Ultra. Card companies started putting out what at the time were considered premium products instead of just the standard base sets.

Still mass produced though nothing really worth mentioning 1989 Upper Deck was another big game changer.

Don't forget 1990 leaf. At 5.00 a pack I passed up on them but today I had wished I bought some other than trading for them

I remember Leaf but there is no value in these cards Frank Thomas is the biggest name Thomas sells for $15.00 or less now ungraded. So unless you grade it and get a high grade like the couple BGS 10 that sold for $800.00 plus that set was pretty much a flop. 1992 Bowman still has some value in some of their cards. 1993 Finest Refractors did well and commons sell for $15.00 or more. 1993 SP was huge. When I think back though 1992 Donruss Diamond Kings is what started the numbering if I remember right. I still believe the milestone set though was the 1996 Select Certified when they produced all those rare cards.

I opened recently a box of 1991 stadium club wax and it was such a great collection. It's a pain it didn't come with any inserts.
The more I'm not the hobby, the more I miss the first half of the 90's. UD, Topps, Fleer with license. Not that's much collection. The beginning of the premium and super premium age. No Panini.
I really wish UD would get a License but I fear the italian plague will get it instead.
