73 Topps Variation Help

73 Topps Variation Help
Down to 3 cards to finish of the 73 set but I'm confused on two variations. Beckett lists 131 & 179 variation as an "ear" card but I've seen on Ebay and other sources the errors listed with a different background color. I can't find any pics of those cards with "ears" but can find them with different background colors. I just want to make sure I'm not chasing a white elephant by looking for the ears. Any expertise on these would be greatly appreciated!!!

Errors, Variations Supplements and Condition Issues

The 1973 Topps Baseball card set has minimal errors and variations, none are really noteworthy as they command no premium. The most frequently attributed to cards are those of managers, whose background contrast seemed to be changed during the pre-production process. The most common condition issue for the set is centering. Notoriously mis-cut in all directions, high-grade versions of cards carry a premium as a result of this production flaw. Two of the major stars effected are Joe Morgan (#230) and Carl Yastrzemski (#245). Interesting to note is that for a company that had for years experimented with other types of baseball related products, no test issues or ancillary products were produced by the Topps Company in 1973.

I believe that one of the coaches on those cards can be found with or without their ear showing. Some of them have the ear cropped off while others show the ear. I don't remember which coach on those particular cards.

That's true but that was on the Zimmer/Padres card #12.

If you look up the card online it tells you...
"Eddie Popowski CO/No right ear" vs "Eddie Popowski CO/right ear showing"
and
"Hoscheit left ear/not showing" vs "Hoscheit left ear/showing"

I think that should tell you what to look for and which coach's ears to look for on the card.
