RE: Scammers Reach New Low - Fake Relics Inserted into Low Print Run Cards
How do they remove the GU pieces without defacing or destroying the card itself?

It just serves as a reminder to research before you buy ANYTHING. Whenever I am going to buy a card, I simply look at other versions of the same card. If the other card has a simple one color swatch and the card I am looking at buying has an amazing patch, well it's something I am going to stay away from.

This Pujols currently on ebay appears to have fake swatches.

Why would that be fake....Its authenticated by Beckett under 10x's magnification...why would you accuse someone you don't know of trying to sell a fake card without any real proof? That's defamation of character....people get sued over that kind of accusation now days :/

I was recently offered in person, a 2012 Topps Museum /5 Quad DiMaggio and 2010 Topps Sterling Triple 1/1 Mantle, both altered in my view. Yes, altered with bogus materials and inserted into what otherwise would be highly desirable low print run cards. The alterations on the DiMaggio were very consistent with what can be seen with Mantle Marquee card in the first link. The 1/1 Mantle had a Wilson tag cut into pieces and inserted where the bat pieces used to sit.

Ok this might be a silly question but wouldnt it say on the back of these cards, "bat" and not "game worn or game used" which the scammer tried to switch to?? Also wouldnt beckett notice this too as someone said these are even being graded??

No defamation . . . I was attacking the card, not the seller. Look at all the other Pujols 2009 Tribute Blue Triple Relics /75 or any other player Triple Relics /75 from that set and not a single one has a letter, uniform number, or logo swatch, much less three on one card. Knowing the set, this is way out of character and too good to be true, especially for a Tribute card numbered to /75.

As for Beckett, here are examples of ones they did not catch (scroll down when you open the link):

First I have to say that's a great image of Pete in your banner.

Some 2009 Tribute relics stipulate the type of relic, but in the case of all Jay Bruce autos numbered to 75 that I've seen, it states jersey on the back when it's really a bat. Something similar is going on with the Sal Bando autos as well, so not that reliable to go by what's on the back of some 2009 Tributes.

In the case of these Pujols cards though, not sure what's stated on the back, but all the swatches I've seen on other Pujols /75 cards are uniform pieces.

Wow...that is just sad that "Experts" at BGS (and I'm sure other grading companies) can't even tell the difference.
With 20+ years collecting, this is the most comprehensive single player collection in the world! Beckett lists 4000+ cards - I'm at 95% completion!

Since this topic has come up with BGS in grading fakes, it would be nice to hear from the editor or someone that could give more insight to this potential mishap to assure those of us, who believe in the BGS grading system, would still have its reputable name....I'm sure "SOMEONE'S" name is attached the serial number on those particular graded cards & whom they were graded by.....

Agreed. I don't fault BGS because the thought that someone would insert a fake relic into an otherwise already great card is unexpected (though nothing is surprising anymore). I will take it as personal task to reach out to Beckett Grading and make sure they are aware, if they aren't already.
