We can't afford to get the high end stuff and there are no card shops within 50 miles of us but our Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy collection is growing. How? Mostly due to the excellent people on this site in the form of trades. The ability to trade my older MJ inserts and other random cards we recently pulled from packs for cards of players my daughter and I see play every summer has increased the enjoyment factor tremendously for both her and myself. So, while the high end stuff might be a negative for the majority of collectors working on a shoestring budget, the ability to get our favorite players cards by giving someone cards of their favorite player has been a huge positive and also something that would have been nearly impossible to do in the days before Triple Threads and 5 Star.
I think this is a great point for the OP to keep in mind. With the internet (and this site in particular), we have access to more cards than we ever did before. 20 years ago, the only cards you'd ever be able to find were: 1. the ones you picked up at the store/LCS; 2. ones your buddy had; 3. the ones you could find at the monthly card show. Good luck trying to complete your rainbow back then! This site is a great place for camaraderie, knowledge, and most importantly, trading! (I've done well over 100 in the year since I joined). It's a great way to build up your collection at minimal cost. There's a lot of good guys on here too who will keep you in mind when they come across stuff you need. Hard to beat that.

Great thread, there sure are a lot of good people on this forum with a lot of great advice. I'd have to agree with the way of player collecting. UVASPINA put it pretty good. 15+ years ago your options were pretty limited. Now with the wide selection, the options are huge! I got back into collecting a few years back and used to post on this board a lot back then too. I was really overwhelmed with all the new stuff and especially the high end stuff to. I hadn't bought any baseball cards since the mid 90's except for some stuff several years ago. The high end stuff is awesome. Sure I cant afford to buy the pack or box, but I could buy a guy I collect from that set off ebay. Let the high rollers gamble and just buy it when they sell on ebay. I look at buying high end boxes and packs a lot like gambling at the casinos, except you have better odds at the casino. But yeah, enjoy college, you have plenty of years to collect cards. You should be spending your extra cash on booze and girls anyways. lol j/k

there are multiple ways to collect

Very well said Sir. When I collected in the mid-90's I would pick up a pack or two at a time and hope that I hit something sweet. I almost never did.
Now the budget is much bigger so I picked up boxes at a time. Part of MY fun if actually sitting down with the wife and cracking packs so stuff like TTT isn't very fun because its only a few packs.
The hobby has changed.
...I also don't collect as an investment. I collect for fun. Investing in cards is like investing in cars. There are a lot of options to buy but most are depreciating assets.

I am typically a fast shipper and I ALWAYS use Delivery confirmation. Sometimes I forget to provide the number.

Just look at it as a product aimed at the collector that likes the gamble as well. There are plenty of other sets aimed at the low and mid range collector, all of those I would take any day of the week over a "high end" product. From what I've seen, I think they do a fairly good job of spreading out the products for each type of collector.

With that said, I think the only thing I don't care for with the high end products is when people complain that they didn't "get their value back" or will not be able to make a profit off of flipping. At this point, anybody who is buying stuff like this should know that they're more than likely not going to make a profit off of it unless they get lucky.

Some more perspective from a life long collector of stuff ... Mostly comic and baseball cards. All I can tell you is that if your hobby is collecting cards, buy what you can afford and enjoy it for what it is ...

I bought comics to read, justified buying comics by telling everyone (parents, friends, etc) how valuable they will be in the future, but the bottom line is I enjoyed reading them ... Even if they are valueless, they were read and enjoyed.

I bought cards as a kid, mostly because of my love of the game, getting to read the stats on the back (before the Internet) flipping and trading with my friends hoping to get a Munson card and trying to amass a Yankee collection.
Later on, in college, I was picking up a pack or two here and there, hoping to get a Mattingly instead of having to buy it from the card shop.
Later still, hoping to score a Jeter card or two.
I'd mainly bought Topps series 1, series 2 and the update, dabbled in Heritage, A&G and Gypsy Queen ...
but lately started experimenting with Tier One, Tribute and Triple threads. I won't be buying Five Star, because I can't justify blowing that much money on one box ... I think I'd feel guilty not feeding the family that month Smile
Good luck with college, my fellow Yankee Bro!

I guess if I saved used tinfoil and used tea bags instead of old comic books and old baseball cards, the difference between a crazed hoarder and a savvy collector is in that inherent value.

Here is my comment about this. I do feel your looking way to much in the high-end stuff. For me I went to the player collector way which I wish I would have done years ago as I would own probably 80% of Derek Jeter's 90's cards and had all his 1992 to 1996 cards already. I can tell you sometimes it takes years before the cards you bought true value comes to play. You really just need to decide how you want to collect and understand it's for your enjoyment and not trying to make a profit on the cards you get. Plus you never know years down the road what will happen as I have seen easy to find cards become hard to find and sell for a lot more then what they did years past. I will just say one set and I remember these pretty well and they didn't cost a lot but there hard to find now and completing a player collection is really hard to do, Topps Tek from the years 1998, 1999, 2000. So my next guess is would say the YSL's will be like this 10 year's from now where they will be hard to find and everyone will want them that are Yankees fans at least.
Derek Jeter Collector from 1992-1996. 305 out of 306 99% complete.

1450/1919 1990's Jeter cards 76%
