Thoughts on products this year?

Thoughts on products this year?
So I was just wondering what everybodies thought was on products so far this year. I for one, have never been more disapointed. First off, I was excited for Elite because the passing the torch set is my favorite ever. BUT, they changed the numbering to 20 with some to 5. So now its almost impossible to do the set. Then we have Panini copying upper decks products by making a black set and combining multiple products like R&S, epix, threads, etc into one set like ud did with spa, spx, sp signature. But the thing im most disapointed in is that every product we have so far is just the same stuff! Are we ever going to get a set that has a good assortment of veteran autos and jsys rather than just nothing buy rcs? Normally we would have had classics by now which was awesome. I really miss that set. I mean Randy Moss is a niner now and I cant get an auto of him in a niner uni? Or how bout a jersey card of aldon smith or navorro bowman who just happen to be 2 of the best defensive players in the league. And to top it all off, all this rc stuff we keep getting is all just event worn crap with sticker autos. This might be the first year ever that I dont buy a box of cards other than maybe something UD puts out because they seem to be the only ones making decent cards now.

RE: Thoughts on products this year?
Topps I think has been awful this year. I think Elite was good with their acetate cards because they really look good. Other than that Panini's last few products I think have been duds. Especially momentum which for the most part was a box that says hey come buy me to get autos of all the unknown rookies. Prominence ruined the other products like Rookies and Stars because it took their signature cards and combined them into the one product. Certified looks nice but they are back to sticker autos this year after being oncard last year. People complained about the redemptions so it appears as though they just got the players to sign a whole lot of stickers at the rookie premiere and now have done away with some of their on card stuff. 2012 also has a weak class compared to last year. This year its Luck, RG3, Richardson, Blackmon , Wilson or bust. Last year you had a lot of popular rookies in Cam, Dalton, Julio, AJ green, Ponder, Ingram, Von Miller, Ridley, Gabbert. What im trying to get at is the rookie premiere players have less of an impact and not necessarily big names in college or at big schools like the rookies in the 2011 class.

RE: Thoughts on products this year?
I like the ideas behind most of them, like Prominence being Panini's answer to Inception, Platinum's more refractor-friendly base design, and much more rookie photos of in-uniform players and not combine workout clothes(Elite, Momentum, Prestige).

But I cannot stand the outrageous prices that we're expected to pay for cheap "relic" cards from the RPM shoot, the ridiculous numbering on rc autos (???/1000+ each for 2 patch/autos in Platinum, really?), and new products that on;y cater to wealthier customers.

I do buy some of the nicer products, when I can afford A pack or two, but I find when I do buy its older products, like Classics and regular Topps, that are inexpensive but way more interesting.

RE: Thoughts on products this year?
jdetter- i also think this years draft class helps bring down the products compared to last year but that could change with the season. guys you mentioned from last year like miller, ridley, and ponder werent really big names at this point in the year. so theres still hope for some rcs this year to step it up. and i think on card autos is the way to go for sure. thats what collectors want. collectors are going to complain about sticker autos because its crap, and were going to complain about redemptions because were not getting what we payed for and have no idea if were ever even going to get it. i dont think redemptions should exist anymore. if they cant get the card in the product, dont release the product or take the card out of the product. simple as that to me.

bigtrip-i totally agree with you on the numbering. we have autos that arent numbered in elite but yet only a small amount exist but then we get autos in other sets that are numbered to 15 million so whats even the point?

RE: Thoughts on products this year?
I thought Prestige, Topps & Score were the only products which had a greater value in each box then SRP. Everything else was a miss. Prestige was most improved. I liked the way R&S added depth to their checklist by including players that were not in their base set into their insert sets. However I did not like the fact they didn't have normal base RC's of the top draft pics.

Scale from 1-5. 1 = worst, 2 = bad, 3 = below average, 4 = average, 5 = good
Bowman - Worst
Prestige - Wonderful
Inception - Bad
Score - Average
Topps - Good
Elite - Bad
Finest - Bad
Rookies & Stars - Below Average
Platinum - Average
Prominence - Below Average
Momentum - Below Average
Prime - Could care less

i agree with most of your ratings except a few which we are actually opposites on lol. i think elite was easily the best set so far. the acetate cards are awesome and they at least had veterans in insert sets. i normally dont care about prime because its just a blah set to me, but i cant help but notice its a big step up from last years at least. its still boring to me, but people seem to be getting a top notch rc every case and some of those booklets are awesome looking. and as you stated, prestige stepped it up too. i would just like to see maybe 1 product to include vets for every like 3 or 4 products released. as of now, there arent any and we have like 12 products that are nothing but sticker autos and rc premiers jerseys. not worth $100 or $200 a box.

RE: Thoughts on products this year?
I haven't bought much this season. It's more for the quality and uniqueness of the products (or lack there of) rather than the class. I've been impressed by Tannehill and Alfred Morris as well this year.

It all looks the same. I have 2 sets I've picked up and am working on, Prestige Rookie Draft Jersey autos and the Elite Inscriptions autos. The latter are on card and seem to grade well.

I think market saturation has killed interest in a lot of this stuff. Unique stuff, however, still reigns.

yup, there are way too many products of the same stuff. saturation is bringing the hobby down. i easily get confused between momentum and prominence just because they are both big word new sets that came out at the same time but basically produced the same thing as well. it makes sense the inscriptions would grade well since they are on a hard plastic card. corners cant get messed up as easily. you should show us all the ones you have! i love seeing all the sets you go after.

RE: Thoughts on products this year?
Agree with nthnoak - Elite has been my favorite product by far this year. Momentum was hot garbage, Topps has been horrible (across the board - with the stupid high print runs). Even the base Topps set was a bit of a disappointment, except for the tall boys.
I dont really buy college stuff so Upper Deck is irrelevant. Decent looking products but the college unis just dont do it for me. (Nor do Press Pass, SAGE, Leaf)
Didnt know about the move to sticker autos but you know, if it means less redemption cards, I'm all for it. I have 8 outstandiing redemption cards from Panini, one from a year ago. That is completely unacceptable. the 2 i got from Topps in 2011 i received very quickly. Panini really needs to fix that.
i am looking forward to Certified nd maybe even Topps Strata.
Oh and to echo sentiments here - PANINI: BRING BACK CLASSICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. I have purchased boxes of Prestige, Topps, Finest, R&S, Platiunum, Momentum, Elite, and Prime. By far my favorite was the Prestige. Biggest disappointment was Momentum. All the cards were chipped and not even one would I bother grading. Prime was a big no no also. Elite was ok. This was the first time I ever bought boxes like this. Wondering, are Upper Deck cards worth anythings, since they don't have an offical licence with the NFL. And secondly, if I had to have a RC of Luck or RG3 this year, what card company would produce the card which would carry the greatest value or be most sought after. See so many cards, but not sure which one people are going for the most. thanks!
