Auto and Mem serializing puzzles me...

Auto and Mem serializing puzzles me...
Ok so we all know there are thousands and thousands of autos and memorabilia cards of each player. Some are numbered, and some are not. What I don't get is autos and mems that are not numbered. The player didn't sign an infinite number of autos and there are only so many cards you can make out of a players jersey. So shouldn't they all be serial numbered or at least tell us a print run? I never really look at checklists, so they may already do this. I understand it would be less of a thrill to pull a Barry Sanders jersey card numbered out of fifty thousand, but it would make more sense. Any thoughts?
Collect BARRY SANDERS, Tom Brady, Bama Alums and Randy Moss

Perceived scarcity is always better than knowing an actual print run. There's probably at least 100-200 of the 1997 Legends Walter Payton Autograph, yet modern collectors think it has to be less than 25 because of its value.
Trying to finish these sets:
1999 Upper Deck Strike Force Quantum /100
2000 Score Complete Players Green/ Blue
2000 Leaf Piece of the Game Preview 4th Down Isaac Bruce
2008 Premier NFL Equipment /25 John Elway

Let me know if you have any available.
