I remember my father taking me to the LCS years ago and while I was ripping pack after pack he and the store owner were having a conversation about how no one was interested in vintage back then. They were having this conversation over a entire display case of 50's and 60's cards. I remember all the star players being in there but would rather have bought my packs of 1991 baseball cards insteadSad. Should have listened to them because all my commons from that period were handed to the trash man last year.

Perhaps we could organize a national drive to collect and destroy as much of those cards as possible. I have a couple thousand I'd send in a heartbeat.

I remember seeing a site where someone was taking donations of cards (or money to buy cards) and planned on destroying however many were sent to him. He had one target year (1987).

Wow I think I struck a nerve. A BIG thanks to everyone who put their 3 1/2 cents worth in response. Everyone had great reasons for keeping the cards or destroying them. I considered all the people who wrote reponses to be experts in the field of card collecting. I can't allow myself to destroy the thousands of cards that I have and I can't give them away. So I guess I am going to hold on to them like I have for the past 26 years. THANKS AGAIN !!!!!!

A card shop on EVERY corner is the truth. I was 13 in 1987. I had 10 different LCS's within a 2-3 mile bike ride of my house. So they made 100,000,000 regular Topps sets and 10,000,000 traded sets. LOL sure its "less" but not really lol....
That cracked me up.

I know I'm going out on a limb, but I think 80s Tiffany and Glossy will slowly increase in value.
Collecting 2010 Bowman, 80s oddball rookies, and '89 Griffeys.

The truly rare cards from that era will maintain and eventually gain value (i.e. rare errors, promos, test sets, and the occasional rare for that era insert i.e. Donruss Elite). Additionally rookies of top players will hold value. However the common cards from that era are just too common to really have much value even over the next 50 years. There are just too many unopened boxes to go with all of the loose cards from that era that it will never happen.
Collecting John Stockton, Karl Malone, Ivan Rodriguez, Gary Carter & UF player rookie year cards.  Plus Jedd Gyorko rookie and prospect cards.

I know I may seem crazy, but I love the late 80's cards because that's when I was in middle and high school, and buying Topps cards was a big deal for me. I think it's pretty cool to look at those sets from time to time. So the value there is entirely personal for me. I like the fact that I can jump on ebay and buy stars cards of the dudes I grew up watching and it only costs me a few bucks.
That's value right there.
