Just wondering why some brands are worth a heck of a lot more than others. For instance, I pulled an obak 1/1 (actual) autograph card of a prospect, and the offers are ridiculously low. The same players bowman card, #'ed /50 have gone for a few hundred. You would think a 1/1 would still have more value.http://www.beckett.com/forums/images/smilies/huh.gif

why are some brands worth more?

My guess would be collector familiarity and brand establishment.
I stumbled onto eBay looking for a Philip Rivers auto for my nephew as a Christmas gift, there was a Obak Auto #/25 and the bid was only at $7 with a couple minutes remaining and my skepticism about Obak kicked in and I hesitated to bid when the auction ended.
Some values are based on sales. And Obak just isn't popular yet.
brand establishment, just like 4th said My Teams: Longhorns (Colt McCoy & Vince Young PC) - Ravens (Ray Lewis PC) - Yankees (Alex Rodriguez PC)
It's a lot about licensing too. Bowman is the first card of a guy in his MLB uniform, which a lot of those other products can't do. I'd say that after Bowman/Topps, Elite Extra Edition is the next most desireable brand for prospects, then followed by Tristar products and the like. That said, I am a big fan of Obak cards, mainly for the historical content and that it's not overly produced.
Trading for cut autos of baseball HOFers I don't have, autos of current and future Cleveland Guardians, and anything else that catches my eye!
Chrome is king!!!!
Yankee pride is right, chrome is king. Everyone want them. Myself, I like chromes but when they are priced outrageously like alot of the yankees prospects are, I have no problem getting me a nice obak auto. If I cant get the chromies, obak or EEE in that order are what I look for.
Chrome is NOT always king...
the 2011 Bowman Harper sells for more than the chrome Harper (with all other things equal)
Topps is really the only MLB card out there, all others don't have MLB logos. I really don't want anything that isn't licensed by the MLB, and I bet a lot of people feel the same way.
Collecting Reds and A's (especially Joey Votto, Bronson Arroyo, and Josh Reddick) |
