If you went to a casino and could play blackjack where the dealer had both of his cards up, would you play by the normal rules? It's this reason I never buy single packs, of course people are going to do what they can to ensure they get something for their money. Personally I think you'd be a sucker to look at an open box and only take the front packs, especially since you can easily see in a lot of products where the thicker packs are. Here's my advice, don't waste your money on retail packs, save up a little extra and get a box. That way you're guaranteed to get some hits.
Hell, d-bags is a little nice to describe this trash... I HATE people like that, and I hope they all DIE a miserable and painful death... Now that's a fair assessment of what I think of pack searchers... And this is why I never buy packs or boxes...

i'm with the poster above - nothing like a pack searcher killing the hobby. its not like a dealer with both cards up - its like a player seeing the cards before they are dealt and deciding to stay or fold.

pack searchers kill retail - my wife ONCE pulled the trigger on a Longevity box for me at target for my birthday - $50 or something ridiculous....every pack the same. by the time i opened half of the packs, i already had more then the stated cards per box.

the punks stuffed the packs back with varying card amounts to make some packs thicker than others to make you think there was a hit in them.

AND - the shrink wrap? Oh, it was on the box like it was factory sealed.

Thankfully, Target gave us our money back....but the searcher got his money back when he returned it and all the hits out of the box.

All the more reason for you to go to your LCS and buy a box there. I realize it can get pricey, but since everyone is looking for the hits, why not ensure you're going to get what you want. I haven't bought a pack of cards from a retail store since I was a little kid, and if you could "pack search" back then, I'm sure I would have lol
Also, the best hit I've ever had was out of a pack that looked just like all the other normal packs. 1/1 auto. No pack searcher would have grabbed that pack. But it was also a factory sealed box that I bought at my LCS, so I didn't have to worry about that anyways

that's horrible, but very common. Every time I see one of those I think your just buying a huge lot of base, maybe an $8 jersey. But I learned the hard way, there's no telling how much I spent on retail before I came to my senses

Funny story, Back in 98, i went to a target and a genius "D-BAG" (still feel this is an appropriate term for these people) had opened a pack of pacific cards then left the cards just sitting on the other packs thinking he didn't get anything. Needless to say, i looked through the opened pack and well looky here, the "moron" must have been spooked by me coming or something because he left a platinum blue Mcgwire sitting right there LOL.. I took the opened pack to the front and asked the girl if i could buy the opened pack. she said yes Smile but I had to pay the price on the pack. I politely gave her 1.99. The book value for the McGwire (pre steroid drama) $500. sold it for $125 to a LCS. Funny thing is I was embarrassed to even bring the pack up to buy it in fear she would think it was me who opened it, but for a 500.00 card it was worth it.....
