I still think reformatting it will solve your problem.
If the HD is bad, no amount of reformatting is going to clear away the error, the only way to do that is install a new HD, and using the old one as a slave drive,

How old is this computer?
the computer is a little less than a year old. i called tech support and apparently my HD is not bad. because the windows update failed, windows has been corrupted. the easiest fix (thats the way he described it would) be to transfer any files i want to an external HD or working computer. put the original drive back in and restore my laptop to factory settings.

anyone wanna donate to my SATA cable and external hard drive fund?
