Your favorite teams draft follies - jplarson - 08-19-2020

RJ's thread on 2020 rookies veered into remembering the glorious draft history of Detroit running backs post Barry Sanders.  In the spirit of fairness let's all remember our own favorite team's lack of drafting at a position.  I'll go first!

Going back 50 years, the Chicago football Bears have drafted 28 quarterbacks.

The greatest one statistically speaking is none other than Jim Harbaugh (1987-1), followed by Jim McMahon (1982-1) and then Kyle Orton (2005-4).  Other first rounders include current (?) QB Mitchell Trubisky (2017-1), Rex Grossman (2003-1), and Cade McNown (1999-1).

Is it any wonder the Bears forked over two 1sts, a 3rd, and Kyle Orton (3rd greatest Bears QB drafted in the last 50 years) for Jay Cutler?  It helped prevent us from drafting any more QBs!!!  In 2009 Josh Freeman might have been drafted.  In 2010?  Tim Tebow!

The Eagles have only had one really bad First Round pick recently - Danny Watkins. But that was a seriously bad First Round Draft Pick.

the Eagles follies are mainly in the later rounds where one might reasonably wonder if the Eagles are just drawing random names out of a hat

Although it does seem that the Eagles history of drafted wide receivers is about as bad as I remembered:

Donovan McNabb was a miracle worker!

Up until Matthew Stafford in 2009, the Lions were kind of a clown show when it came to drafting quarterbacks after Bobby Layne, who last played for Detroit in 1958.

In other words, they went about 50 years between good QBs.

Some of the more recent ones that may have had their moments but ultimately did not lead the Lions to the promised land:

Eric Hipple
Chuck Long
Rodney Peete
Andre Ware
Charlie Batch
Joey Harrington
Dan Orlovsky
Jake Rudock
Brad Kaaya

Bears fans shouldn't feel so bad ... at least you have won a Super Bowl.

THE. NEW. ENGLAND. PATRIOTS. CAN. NOT. DRAFT. ELITE. RECEIVERS.

Yes, they've had steady workmen, ya know blue collar type guys a la Troy Brown, Deion Branch, Edelman (who they honestly lucked into being as productive as he is). But who is the last clear cut number one wide receiver drafted by New England?

In my lifetime (Just turned 30 last Friday), New England has drafted 29 receivers who have combined for zero All Pros (Matthew Slater has two on special teams), 3 total Pro Bowls three different receivers (again, Slater with 8 on ST). Of the 29, only 9 were primary starter for at least a season and only Jules, Branch, Brown and Terry Glenn were starters for more than 3 seasons.

Hell, if we're being honest, Belichick and his predecessors didn't do much with skill players in the draft room period. RB you had Curtis Martin and who else? (Spoiler, no other AP or PB except Sam friggin Gash in the early 90s).

I'll admit TE has been strong with Coates, Watson, Gronk and Hernandez.

Irving Fryar was pretty good for the mid-80s teams.

You aren't kidding! Matt Slater has 1 career reception! Two best receivers I see since 1970 are Stanley Morgan and Irving Fryar like RJ said.

Only six 1st round WRs drafted since 1970 - Darryl Stingley in 73, Morgan in 77, Fryar in 84, Hart Lee Dykes in 89, Terry Glenn in 96, then....... uhhh, N'Keal Harry in 2019..... 23 years without drafting a top WR?!

It's amazing what deficiencies an amazing GM, coach, and QB can cover up! The fact that 2 people share those 3 duties even more so.

That is a really good one - since 1990 it looks like Aaron Dobson with 698 career yards is in the top 10 for yards by a wide receiver drafted by New England.

Of course like the one and only year they had a legit WR (Randy Moss), Brady throws 50 TDs for the first and only time in his career.

Makes you wonder what numbers he could have put up playing with a Calvin Johnson-level talent for 5 or 6 years.

Although, you do have to factor in Gronk as a receiver ... he gobbled up most of the catches, yards and TDs when he wasn't hurt.

RE: Your favorite teams draft follies - foleylion08 - 08-21-2020

Seriously. That's why every year after Moss left when any #1 receiver was leaving a team via free agency or asking out, I always prayed they'd go to NE. And they never did. Or when they did, it wouldn't work out. A la Ocho, Reggie Wayne. Had been pleading for Fitzgerald for about the last decade.

Belichick has hit on plenty of decent to above average receivers in free agency, the man just can't evaluate them coming out of college.
