1978 Dover Publications-1916 Famous & Barr Reprint #171 Casey Stengel (Famous & Barr was a clothing store based in St. Louis, Missouri. It specialized in clothing, footwear, bedding, furniture, jewelry, beauty products, and housewares. In later years it would become a division of Macy's. In 1916 they released a regional issue that mirrored photos from The Sporting News. This is a reprint cut from the pages of a 1978 edition of Dover Publications showing Casey Stengel during his playing days.)
1982 Brett Spotbilt #5 George Brett (This one card was put out by Spot-Bilt Shoe Company in 1982. The GB5 at the top is George's initials and uniform number. Coincidentally I worked at Spot-Bilt in 1981. I had just returned to Maine after spending a couple of years in Florida and was staying with my brother. He was working at the Spot-Bilt shoe shop in Bangor as a toe-laster and the first place I went looking for a new job when I came back was there. I was hired on the spot and they put me on a toe-lasting machine next to my brother and I could not get the hang of it. The foreman was a jerk (common for the shoe shops in Maine) and after one week of struggling, I was let go. Not my shortest career though. That would be my hour and a half career at McDonald's where after watching my third short film on how to make hamburgers the McDonald's way, my Dad called the restaurant to tell me I had another job opportunity with the City of Bangor at the International Airport. I walked out and told them not to bother paying me but a month later I got a check in the mail for just over $2 and I still have the check stub today.)
1991 Foot Locker Slam Fest #1-1 Ken Griffey Jr. BB (This card is from a multi-sport set issued by Foot Locker to commemorate the "Foot Locker Slam Fest" dunk contest televised during halftimes of NBC college basketball games in 1991. Foot Locker of course is an American sportswear and footwear retailer headquartered in Manhattan, New York.)

1992 Delphi Bradford Exchange #12 Babe Ruth (This card was one in a set issued to promote the Legends of Baseball dinner plates released by the Delphi company. With each plate in the series, collectors received a free old-fashioned Baseball Legends card depicting the player and recounting the milestones of his career.)
1992 Score Proctor and Gamble #5 Cal Ripken (This colorful card is from an 18-card set produced by Score for Proctor and Gamble as a mail-in premium showcasing players from the 1992 All-Star Game. Collectors could obtain the set by sending in a required certificate that was published in a newspaper flyer, 99 cents, three UPC symbols from three different Proctor and Gamble products, and 50 cents for postage and handling. Proctor and Gamble, incorporated in Ohio, is known for their wide range of personal health/consumer health, and hygiene products.)
1992 Ziploc #11 Hank Aaron (These cards were found one per package of Ziploc sandwich bags and the complete 11-card set was available via a mail-in offer for 50 cents and two UPC symbols from Ziploc.)

1993 Duracell Power Players I #20 Nolan Ryan (This set was issued in four card packs featuring three player cards and one Duracell Official Order Form card and was included free with the purchase of a Saver Pack of Duracell batteries. The complete set could be ordered by mailing in proof of purchase from other Duracell products.)
1993 Fleer Fruit of the Loom #6 Barry Bonds (These cards paralleling the 1993 Fleer base set are differentiated by the Fruit of the Loom logo and could be acquired in six-card packs inserted in three-packs of Fruit of the Loom boys briefs.)
1995 Skin Bracer #1 Don Larsen/WS Perfect Game (I received this three-card set from a co-worker at the radio station that I work for. The cards were sponsored by the Colgate-Palmolive Company and were originally available in specially marked Skin Bracer toiletries bags and five-ounce Skin Bracer gift cartons. Autographed 8" by 10" photos commemorating the same players and events were also available for $7.99 with a proof-of-purchase from Skin Bracer, Afta skin conditioner or Colgate shaving cream. The cards feature World Series highlights such as Bill Mazeroski's World Series-ending home run, Bobby Thomson's Shot Heard 'Round the World and this one commemorating Don Larsen's perfect game.)

The next player that I collect that came up on the randomizer is never going to the Hall of Fame but he was a superstar. Jose Canseco burst onto the scene in 1986, was an All-star and won the AL Rookie of the Year. Two years later he had another All-star campaign, led the AL in Home Runs and RBI, won a Silver Slugger Award and became the first player to ever steal 40 bases and hit 40 home runs in the same season on his way to AL MVP honors. He may also have been the first player to have a fly ball bounce off his head and go over the fence for a home run. He would go on to play for seven different teams including the A's twice and was much more successful than his twin brother, Ozzie, who also played MLB ball. Of course today he is known as the father of steroids. I've read his book Juiced and his book Vindicated. Later in his career his massive body betrayed him and it was difficult for him to stay healthy and in the lineup. He may have been blackballed from baseball as he claims but I will still collect him. He's the most recent member of my 1000 Card Club and I currently have 1017 different Beckett recognized cards of Jose including these nine from my collection.

1985 Huntsville Stars Jennings #44 Jose Canseco (This set, sponsored by Burger King was produced by Donn Jennings. I found the complete set at a dumpy old antique store in Holden, Maine. I drove by it every day and night on my way to work and back and never saw anybody there. One day I decided to stop and check it out and see if they had any baseball cards. I walked in to what appeared to be a hoarder's paradise and the proprietor seemed shocked to have an actual potential customer walk in. He was sitting at an old desk half buried in piles of papers and I asked him if he had any baseball cards. He told me he had boxes and boxes of them but had no idea where they were. It wasn't easy to maneuver throughout his store due to the disarray but as I turned to leave, I saw this complete set in a package tacked to a post. I bought it for $10. The shop closed soon after and looked like it was abandoned and even today the weeds are more than six feet tall around the front and windows are broken and I wouldn't be surprised if everything is still inside, maybe even the owner.<IMG SRC="https://www.beckett.com/forums/images/smilies/undecided.gif">)

Wrapping up another decade of my collection today as I revisit 1989. That was the year Griffey Junior cards hit the mainstream sets. At this point I was collecting complete sets of Topps, Donruss, Fleer and Score and now I'd added two more sets in Bowman and Upper Deck. It was starting to be a bit much but I liked all the different designs. Here are nine cards from my collection all from 1989.

1989 Bowman Reprint Inserts Tiffany #5 Mickey Mantle '51 (Topps brought the Bowman brand back after a 34 year absence and in addition to the base set, they produced a parallel Tiffany set. The set also included an 11-card reprint set of classic reprint cards. I have a few of the Tiffany reprints including these Mantles.)

1989 Fleer #616A Bill Ripken ERR/Rick Face written/on knob of bat (Cal Ripken has made many appearances on my thread, but today it's his brother making an appearance. Probably one of the most controversial cards to ever have been issued in the modern era. I blurred the offensive word on the bat and ran it by floydtown prior to posting. I also own the black box version and the scribble version and there are many other versions of this card too but this is the original in all of it's infamous glory.)

Tom Seaver is up next on the random list of players I collect. We just lost Tom in August. Mets fans knew him as "The Franchise" as he was the main spark plug on that amazing "Miracle Mets" team that won the World Championship in 1969. 12 All-star selections, three Cy Young Awards, five league-leading strikeout campaigns and three ERA titles later, he wound up in the Hall of Fame with the most votes ever accumulated up to that point. He was a Rookie of the Year in 1967, he threw a no-hitter and led his league in victories three times. Seaver retired to Napa Valley, California where he started his own vineyard. For so long he was known as "Tom Terrific" that in 2019 NFL quarterback, Tom Brady was denied a trademark to that same moniker when the U.S. Trademark Office said it would confuse him with Seaver. I currently have 659 different Beckett recognized cards of Seaver in my collection including these nine vintage.

1991 Stadium Club Charter Member #NNO Nolan Ryan Bronze Medal (in 1991 Topps produced a 50-card multi-sport set that was sent to charter members in the Topps Stadium Club. The display box that contained the cards also included this Nolan Ryan bronze metallic card and a key chain. This is probably the heaviest card in my collection.)
1995 Metallic Impressions Ripken #6 Cal Ripken Jr./Batting follow through (Produced by Avon, this card came in a special collector's tin that held five metal Ripken cards. I also have Metallic Impressions cards of Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Nolan Ryan and Ty Cobb.)
1996 Leaf Preferred Steel Gold #1 Frank Thomas (Leaf Preferred Steel cards are metalized cards that came one per pack of Leaf Preferred. This is a scarce Gold version that was seeded one every 24 packs.)

1999 SkyBox Molten Metal Xplosion #147 Roger Clemens SN (Here's an insert from Skybox's Molten Metal set in 1999 that was randomly inserted into packs. They are parallels to the base set printed on metal stock with added etching, rounded corners and foil stamping.)
1999 Topps Stars 'N Steel #26 Ken Griffey Jr. (In 1999 Topps jumped into the metal card fray with a 44-card set printed using "Serillustion" technology and bonded to 25-gauge metal with a silver border.)

2005 Fleer Platinum Diamond Dominators Metal #19 Miguel Cabrera (Here's a Hobby exclusive metal parallel to the regular Diamond Dominators insert set. The metal cards have die cut rounded corners.)
2005 Origins Nostalgic Signs #IR Ivan Rodriguez (Upper Deck issued their Origins set in 22-card tins that included one oversize Nostalgic tin sign. I don't normally collect oversize cards but mistakenly traded for this somewhere along the line and kept it because I think it is a beautiful design.)
2015 Topps Update Etched in History #EIH6 Ichiro Suzuki (This is an insert from 2015 Topps Update. Another thing that I normally try to avoid are manufactured relic cards and I didn't know that's what this was when I traded for it. Still it's pretty cool and it features what will be the first Japanese player to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame.)

Alex Rodriguez. He came up alongside Nomar Garciaparra and Derek Jeter and it looked for all the world that the three of them would have long productive careers and all be enshrined in the Hall together. Alex was a 14-time All-star, a 10-time Silver Slugger, a 5-time Home Run leader, a Batting Champion, a 4-time Hank Aaron Award winner, a 3-time MVP, 6 Player's Choice Awards, a Babe Ruth Award, a World Championship, two Gold Glove Awards and a 40 home run/40 stolen base season. The stats are amazing. More than 3000 hits, more than 2000 RBI, four homers short of 700. His 25 grand slams are the most in MLB history. That's definitely a Hall of Fame resume but Alex wanted more and his career will forever be defined by his foray into performance enhancing drugs and questionable behavior. He earned more than $441 MILLION playing ball but I'll never forget him swatting the ball out of Bronson Arroyo's glove on his way to first or him yelling, "I got it" distracting the Blue Jays infielders in 2007 causing them to back off an easy pop up or Jason Varitek feeding him his catcher's mitt. He says he's sorry for all that and I believe he is truly sorry . . . that he got caught. He'll be eligible for the Hall in 2022 and personally I don't think he's getting in. He became a major disappointment for me as I invested and accumulated so many of his cards that resulted in him being my second largest player collection. As of this date I have 2821 unique Beckett recognized cards of ARod including these nine from my collection.

Happy Thanksgiving!!! 2020 has been a year like no other we have ever experienced, not just in our hobby, but in all of our everyday lives. My wife and I have a tradition of keeping a Mason jar in our cupboard and every time during the year we are thankful for something, we write it down on a scrap of paper and put it in the jar. On New Year's Eve, we sit on the bed and literally count our blessings for the year. It can be anything from a surplus check, a visit from the granddaughter, a new piece of furniture, the car passing inspection or a nice day kayaking on the lake. I survived eight weeks of daily radiation treatments this spring. Man, was I thankful when that was over so on my last day, it went in the jar. Our jar is full again this year so even though it's been rough and unusual, we've still found things to be thankful for. I wish all of my fellow Beckett members a safe and happy Thanksgiving Day today. In celebration of turkey day, I'm showing nine of my more than 400 Turkey Red cards from my collection.

My wife and I amicably separated in 1990 and she went to Florida to stay with her sister. I was in a bit of a funk that year and a couple of my buddies suggested we take a cross-country motorcycle trip together. I was eligible for three weeks of vacation that year and decided to take all three weeks in a row and go. Come August my buddies backed out and I packed up my dome tent, a bedroll, sleeping bag and a U.S. Atlas in those pre-GPS days and loaded up my 1986 Honda Magna 750cc and rode from Bangor, Maine to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in the rain. From there I rode down to the Florida Keys and then back up around the Gulf Coast all the way to Houston. At that point I was halfway through my vacation and decided to head back. I went through Arkansas, across Tennessee into Georgia and rode through the Great Smokey Mountains back up through Kentucky and Ohio all the way to Buffalo. There I crossed at Niagara Falls into Toronto and rode through Canada and came back down in upstate New York and made my way back across to Maine. I averaged 500 miles per day, stayed off the Interstate and kept to back roads, went through 22 states and two Canadian provinces, saw a lot of Eastern America that I'd never seen before as well as lots of little kids with their thumbs in the air.
Moving up into the 1990s today with my collection. The Leaf set was added to sets I needed to acquire that year. There had been Leaf sets in prior years but they pretty much mirrored the Donruss sets and although I had all those, 1990's set was a different design. Here are nine cards from my collection all released in 1990.

The next player that I collect is Fred McGriff. How is it that he's not in the Hall of Fame? Is it because he came up seven homers shy of 500? His teammates and manager from those great 90's Braves teams are enshrined. Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Chipper, Bobby Cox, even John Schuerholz their GM. Fred was the cleanup hitter on that team and played a huge hand in many of their wins. Who can forget those training videos he hosted for Tom Emanski's Baseball Fundamentals? Maybe the Veterans Committee will show him some love in the future. I currently have 821 unique cards of the "Crime Dog". Here are nine from my collection.
