Scammers Reach New Low - Fake Relics Inserted into Low Print Run Cards - coimbre 21 - 06-13-2013

I may have personally encountered the scammer referenced in the YouTube video. I was recently offered in person, a 2012 Topps Museum /5 Quad DiMaggio and 2010 Topps Sterling Triple 1/1 Mantle, both altered in my view. Yes, altered with bogus materials and inserted into what otherwise would be highly desirable low print run cards. The alterations on the DiMaggio were very consistent with what can be seen with Mantle Marquee card in the first link. The 1/1 Mantle had a Wilson tag cut into pieces and inserted where the bat pieces used to sit.

What about strictly auto cards? Has anyone seen or heard of anything with them? Like the 1998 Donruss Significant Signature set or in football, 1999 Gridiron Greats Autos, specifically Unitas and Payton?

I don't normally buy low serial number patches but something to look out for

I'm not trying to be dense, but when looking at this from a larger perspective, what's the point in removing the original relic if the card is necessary for verifying its authenticity? Do people actually get off on owning relics they can't essentially prove to be real? Again, if I'm missing something obvious please let me know...

You're question is at the heart of what stunned me. The scammers are replacing simple and original uniform swatches and bat pieces with more elaborate and bogus letter, number, or logo swatches that fetch higher prices from unsuspecting buyers. There's a good case highlighting this on YouTube concerning a Babe Ruth swatch where the fake one realized $700 more than it had originally as a simple Babe Ruth swatch. In some cases bat relics are being removed for the elaborate swatches, again with the intent of realizing a higher price. These original bat cards with uniform swatches may be a bit easier to spot through Beckett OPG but Worthpoint is a great resource all around, even without a subscription. What these card doctors do with the removed original swatches and relics is anyone's guess.

I think you're looking mainly at non-collector's who are just in it to make a buck. If they can buy a "cheap" relic card and dress it up with a 4-color patch, rather than a 1-color patch, they stand to make more in most cases - like the Case Keenum would probably go for a higher price with a better looking swatch in there.

The ones I don't understand are the Jordans and Mantles and the 1/1s. Those are already going to bring a premium because of who the player is and the scarcity of the card in the case of the whales.

It makes no sense to me, aside from simple greed.

What about the d-bags who use stickers that are wiped and resigned then placed on just base cards of top stars that get big money?
