Looking for clarification on a Stadium Club Paul Pierce card - SHowley2003 - 05-02-2013

So I recently grabbed a Pierce Stadium Club Chrome RC graded by PSA. The seller had a base and refractor version up for bid. Both of them were labeled by PSA as 1999 Preview. Other than that the cards look identical to the 1998-99 SC Chrome cards. There are no markings that distinguish it from being any different from the base RC. I even have a refractor to compare it to.

I have found on several RCs made by Topps (released for the 98-99 season) that it is 50/50 whether PSA labels them as 1999 or 1998. So I didn't find this odd. Does anyone know what the "preview" classification is all about? I couldn't find anything listed in Beckett.

Thanks for any assistance.

I think Beckett just dropped the "Preview" from the title. I've seen it used off and on to describe the chrome inserts sets in both the 98-99 & 99-00 stadium club releases. I think the Preview is used more often in regards to the 99-00 set because there was a stadium club chrome released that year. Should be easily distinguishable because the numbering on is SCC as opposed to just a number.

Thank you. So is that to say that all the 1998-99 Stadium Club Chrome Pierce cards numbered SCC34 would be considered "preview"? In my ignorance of this product I was thinking that the preview might be related to some promotional release or something.

Yes, that's correct. The Stadium Club Chrome cards in 1998-99 were an insert and meant to preview the chrome technology on Stadium Club cards which were released as their own product line 1999-00. The distinction used to be made in Beckett as 1998-99 were called "Preview", but somewhere along the line they dropped the "Preview" from the name in the price guide. This happens more than one might think. The one that messed me up with how I had ordered my cards was more in football when "Playoff Absolute" went simply to "Absolute" and a lot of the Pacific products lost the manufacturer name "Pacific" and were just called "Aurora", "Revolution", "Private Stock", etc.
