Explain, describe, and show your Basketball Card Personal Collection (PC) - xstreaminsanity - 03-14-2012

I would like to use this thread to showcase our personal collections. If you currently have running PC threads, provide me with the link and I'll post your name along with your PC threads in here for quick and easy access to the other members. Like so:

<b>Username</b> - <a href="#">Personal Collection #1</a>, <a href="#">Personal Collection #2</a>, <a href="#">Personal Collection #2</a>

Also in here, I'd like you to explain and describe your PC. Why did you choose that/those team(s), player(s), year(s), brand(s), etc.? When did you decide what your PC(s) would be? What does your collection mean to you? In what ways has your collection grown (trades, buys, donations, etc.)? Do you have specific criteria for a card to be PC? What are your goals for your collection? If you reach your goal, will you have more goals after that? If so, what kind or are you not sure yet? What is the pride and joy of your PC?

I'll start with my PC for everyone to have an idea of what to put.

<h2>Personal Collection - Detroit Pistons</h2>
I've been collecting cards for the last 19 years now. However, I didn't decide to exclusively collect Detroit Pistons cards until about 3 years ago (2009). Before that, the only cards I had that I didn't want were duplicates. I wanted to collect one of every card...but I soon realized that to be impossible. Now my goal is to collect a copy of every NBA Licensed Detroit Pistons cards (not including 1/1, though I'll collect them as well). Why the Detroit Pistons? Well, I was born in Michigan to begin with, but mainly because when I look at most teams and what they've represented, the Pistons always seemed to be a team (that's why the Spurs are my second favorite team). No real superstars that needed to steal the show, but team play. Isiah Thomas and Grant Hill, our two most recent superstars (up for debate), were two of the most humble superstars I've known (Durant and Rose are pretty humble too) and never really required the ball be in their hands. They'd do whatever it took for the team to win. Anyways, I don't consider a Detroit Pistons card only cards that have the player in a Detroit Pistons card.

<ul>A card is a Detroit Pistons card if it:
<li>the player is in a Detroit Pistons jersey.<br /><a href="http://images.checkoutmycards.com/zoom/36fe2cd5-df3c-498f-b620-94efa938aa95.jpg" target="new"><img src="http://images.checkoutmycards.com/zoom/36fe2cd5-df3c-498f-b620-94efa938aa95.jpg" height="250px" width="175px" /></a></li>
<li>the card says "Traded to Detroit", "Drafted by the Detroit Pistons", plays for the Detroit Pistons (say the card doesn't say traded to, shows the player in one teams jersey, but the card has the Detroit logo as the team he plays for) or something similar.<br /><a href="http://images.checkoutmycards.com/zoom/279fd1a6-3f3c-460b-9c91-b8c517e6a40d.jpg" target="new"><img src="http://images.checkoutmycards.com/zoom/279fd1a6-3f3c-460b-9c91-b8c517e6a40d.jpg" height="250px" width="175px" /></a> <a href="http://images.checkoutmycards.com/zoom/cc3b5e02-cba5-4a8f-a552-5fab5af70871.jpg" target="new"><img src="http://images.checkoutmycards.com/zoom/cc3b5e02-cba5-4a8f-a552-5fab5af70871.jpg" height="250px" width="175px" /></a></li>
<li>the card is an Olympic card of the player during a year in which he played for the Detroit Pistons.<br /><a href="http://images.checkoutmycards.com/zoom/654597b3-3144-4ad2-b456-9fe1f94e36e6.jpg" target="new"><img src="http://images.checkoutmycards.com/zoom/654597b3-3144-4ad2-b456-9fe1f94e36e6.jpg" height="250px" width="175px" /></a></li>
<li>the card has a player in a non-jersey (suit, street clothes, etc.) for a product that was released during the year the player played for the Detroit Pistons.<br /><a href="http://images.checkoutmycards.com/zoom/3cef728b-b274-469a-9890-97a5545166de.jpg" target="new"><img src="http://images.checkoutmycards.com/zoom/3cef728b-b274-469a-9890-97a5545166de.jpg" height="175px" width="250px" /></a></li>
</ul>

When I decided to start exclusively collecting Detroit Pistons, I had maybe 300 different Pistons cards. I am currently at 3,689 different Pistons cards. I was able to get to this point mainly because of generous donations from many of the wonderful members here on Beckett.com. toddap, leadmetogreatness, bbills1999, mrhurtado, taffsters, hof collector, and many many more. I have completed over 200 trades here on Beckett.com, but the bulk of my collection came when toddap sent me many boxes of Pistons he didn't need anymore. Of the cards he sent me, I needed (didn't have) over 1,300 of them. And he asked for nothing in return. Many of the other traders here have sent me packages or freebies in a trade here and there for nothing in return as well and those packages have yielded a few hundred more.

If I were to somehow catch up and have a copy of every Pistons card, I would then go towards collecting cards that had to deal with the Pistons in some way, but not necessarily directly. Maybe shadow cards (a Pistons player, including All-Star games, in the background, the Pistons floor, etc.), or possibly cards of Pistons players before and after being on the Pistons (NBA first, college after), or maybe some other connection to the Pistons. However, I currently have over 12,000 more Pistons to go to catch up and the number seems to grow every year, so I have a while before I reach that goal.

Another goal of mine is to get every single card of my Pistons PC graded regardless of what grade I think it may get unless it's easy to replace. If I have a $0.05 card, it will get graded. If it looks like it will get a bad grade, I may try to trade for a better version of it before sending it in for grading. At 3,700 different cards already, and knowing how many I have will grow each year, it will take me many years to be able to get all of my cards graded and it will cost a lot, but I know they'll be protected, labeled, and look very nice for display.

I honestly can't put any one of my Pistons cards as the pride of my collection. At one point it was my 2009-10 Certified Mirror Black Rodney Stuckey 1/1 because it was given to me by a friend and it was my only 1/1 that wasn't a plate. But at the same time, since my favorite player of all time is Joe Dumars, his RC means a lot to me because it was also given to me by a friend. Every Pistons card I have means something to me, all the way from base to autographs. But at this moment, I think my 1997-98 SkyBox Autographics Joe Dumars is my pride because it's the only Joe D autograph I have.

<hr style="height:5px;width:85%;" />

So, tell us about your PC. What makes you collect!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Here it goes...

I started collecting in 1996-97 NBA Season (maybe before that or after that season). I was still in the Philippines and I didn't really know who or what to collect. I collected because many of my classmates (elementary/grade school) and even my schoolmates (high school) urged me to follow their lead and they showed me their awesome (at the time) collection of different players, teams and/or sets/brands. I decided to get in the action and I was totally hooked. I stopped collecting in 1998 or 1999.

Fast forward...

I flew to the United States and landed in SoCal (Palm Springs). I moved up to NorCal and settled here in Daly City and I saw my first ever card show in Serramonte Shopping Center. It was so cool and so amazing. Kids and Adults, Men and Women, Boys and Girls, and even Senior Citizens are having fun and buying some stuff from the tables that are all aligned like an arcade. That was the time that I thought to collect again.

Right now...

I have decided to mainly focus on collecting Larry Bird and will not pursue any other player, team and set. I like trading but I know that I can't keep up buying tons of boxes after boxes to get something for trade and for my PC. I'd rather focus my time and money on obtaining what I really want, slowly but surely with no regret, guilt and neglect.

Check out my photobucket. I uploaded my Larry Bird PC. It is only low-end and commons for now. Some inserts with few parallels. No Rookie Card, Autographed Card and no Memorabilia Card/Full-Size Memorabilia yet.

Thanks for looking and many thanks for all the members that traded with me and also the members that gave me freebie items/cards.

<b>My apologies for all of the editing and deleted/moved imges because I am updating my photobucket. I want it to be organized. Smile</b>

The New York Knicks

I started in the hobby at a young age. My family has been collecting for many generations (Stamps/coins/etc). I was into collecting from 1995-99. I took a break and started back up during 2005-06 but because of the amount of time I was spending overseas, I as only able to buy cards 2-3 months of the season. I had always been a Michael Jordan fan, and my father a New York Knicks Fan. So naturally I always rooted against the Knicks when they played the Bulls, but as time went by and Jordan retired, I accepted the Knicks as my team also. The fact that I was living in New York whenever I was back stateside also influenced this decision. My father has always been a Knicks fan and a huge Patrick Ewing fan, so I developed a joy in collecting Patrick Ewing cards and other Legendary Knicks players. I will NOT pursue 1 autograph of each Knick, but I aspire to have atleast 1 Autograph of every Knicks hall of famer. I will also aspire to own 1 copy of each Patrick Ewing Refractor. I consider My Knicks PC to be my biggest and the one that I am most likely going to continue on the long term.

Basketball Hall of Famers

As I continue maturing in the hobby and life, I have began enjoying the feats and accomplishments of generations past. This appreciation has pushed me to start collecting Hall of Famer Autographs, and the Top 50 NBA Players set. With such a large selection of autographs on ebay and throughout the internet, Its always interesting to see what route you can take when tackling monumental sets and player checklists. I've divided my Hall of Famer collection into Coaches and Players.

1991-92 NBA Hoops McDonald's Dream Team Autographed Set

At the End of 2011, I was looking for direction, in my hobby and PC goals. For the first time I put financial gain as a motivating factor to my collecting and when Karl Malone and Charles Barkley Autographed 1991 Dream Team cards came up for sale, I knew what direction my PC was going to go. I decided to complete an autographed 1991-92 NBA Hoops McDonald's Dream Team set. Something that had never been done before till now. It was a perfect storm, key cards showing up online within weeks of each other, including the biggest fish to free the Michael Jordan. I never thought I would get the card to finish off the set, but with Gods help and my wife's generosity, I was able to finish off the set. The set contains 14 of the 16 members of the 1992 Olympic USA gold winning teams, Coaching staff and Players. The only 2 players who aren't in the set are Clyde Drexler and Christian Laettner who were selected to the team after this set was released. Of the cards in this set, the 2 hardest were Chuck Daly and Michael Jordan. Chuck Daly having passed away in 2009 meant I had to most likely pry his Dream Team autographed card out of someones Personal Collection, and Michael Jordan being an Upper Deck exclusive with only 1 authenticated autographed copy of his card in this set, meant that I was either going to get very lucky tracking down the original or I was going to end up risking buying an in-person unauthenticated copy. My next goal is to upgrade the Patrick Ewing in-person autograph I have for a Scoreboard /1992 version and then hall all the cards authenticated.

My collection has grown in leaps and bounds now that I have stopped focusing on Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. I hope to someday complete the NBA Top 50 Set and the Top 10 Coaches set but until then, Ill do my best to continue enjoying the hobby.

RE: Explain, describe, and show your Basketball Card Personal Collection (PC) - jarrrrrod - 03-14-2012

I got in to collecting cards in about 1990...needless to say, I was a HUGE Michael Jordan and Bulls fan. I collected pretty heavily until around 2000 when I lost interest for a while. In that time period, I heavily collected MJ cards. I haven't counted them in a long time, but I probably have 3,000 plus MJ's, most of which are base cards, but I was able to pull a few nice ones. The whole time collecting growing up, I pulled every card I own out of packs or boxes that I bought. I wasn't in to buying singles or trading at all (mostly because I didn't know anyone else that collected). Out of all of those packs and boxes, I never pulled an MJ Auto.

Flash forward to 2008. I am also a huge Kansas State fan. Needless to say, K-State has a lack of players in the NBA. I have a decent collection of Mitch Richmond cards, but thats all I had from KSU the whole time I was collecting. Well, of course, Michael Beasley and Bill Walker were in the 2008 draft. Me and a buddy decided to go buy a couple packs of cards in hopes of getting a Beasley, and since then, I got hooked again. I've only recently started trading cards on here (only 6 trades I believe) to try and pick up some Beasley's and Walkers. I have accumulated a handful of Beasley auto's, and maybe 12 or so jersey cards. Also, in 2009, I was able to pick up my first and 2nd MJ Auto. I have 2 of the 2008-09 SP Rookie Threads MJ Authorization card, that I somehow managed to pull from packs at the same store. I still don't have any MJ game used cards.

Anyway, my MJ collection continues to grow as does my Beasley, but I am reconsidering my Beasley collection due to his recent downward spiral in the NBA. I still believe he has the ABILITY to score 20 points a game (after watching him score 26 points and 12 rebounds per game in college) but he just hasn't been consistent and lately is hardly getting any minutes. I guess it would be best for him to be traded. I just feel foolish sometimes trading away GOOD CARDS (i.e. Rose, Griffin, Bryant, James, Love) for Beasley when his cards will probably decrease in value whereas the other guys most likely won't.

Anyway, that pretty much sums up my collection!

RE: Explain, describe, and show your Basketball Card Personal Collection (PC) - taffster74 - 03-14-2012

i haven't got images (stupid pc won't save images from scanner as jpegs) so I'll just explain/describe.

I've been a collector ever since I can remember (going back as far as 1980 when I was five, going on six). If it was the regular NSWRL (New South Wales Rugby League) cards put out by scanlens it was Cricket (also put out by scanlens). Unfortunately, all of those cards are now long gone - if I didn't get a complete set, they'd go in the bin because there were no packs available after the season was over. I also collected toys - Star Wars and the TRansformers were the biggest things. I got into comics in 1985 and drifted away from cards about the same time (my last set was 1985 Transformers by Dandy Gum - missing #18 Optimus Prime profile). I didn't get back into cards until 1995 after a friend sort of gave me a nudge in that direction. have been collecting pretty much ever since.

Why the players? I started collecting patrick ewing initially because at the time he was affordable yet was still a big star. Of course after reading the backs of the cards and picking the Standing Tall Video (which I still have), I grew to respect the man for what he's been through and what he's done off the court. I started collecting Jalen Rose because he was a left-hander like myself. I collect Garnett because the first card of his I got (1995-96 Collector's choice rookie) said he had an inside touch reminiscent of Patrick Ewing. That was me sold! I collect Mario bennett because I collected him in the past and wanted to renew that collection. Detlef SChrempf? My ex-fiance was German and i collected him while I was with her. Aldridge, Green? I had plenty of their rookies and they were affordable. Patrick Mills? He's a local boy (Canberra, Australia born and bred) and the first australian aboriginal in the NBA (Nathan Jawai is a Torres Straight Islander - still australian and indigenous, just not aboriginal). Murray, Ward? Just to round out the team. I collect John Wallace because in 1996/97 I decided I wanted to collect another knickerbocker and it had to be Rookie. He looked to the better player of the three New york drafted that year (Wallace, Walter McCarty and Dontae Jones).

<h2>Personal Collection - Big Men On Court</h2>

My PC is not what it used to be. I used to PC the San Francisco 49ers, Anfernee Hardaway, and Derek Jeter. The peak of my collecting was the mid to late 90's. Over the last 10 years or so I have slowly offloaded most of my collection. So now I only have about 800 mixed cards. Now I am completing the 1997-98 Big Men On Court insert set. Which I feel is the embodiment of my heyday of collecting. I pulled the Penny out of a pack back in '98 and have had it since. I have the Pippen, Hill, and Shaq incoming. I intend to complete the set and put it away. After that I'll probably donate the rest of my cards. In the meantime I find myself buying and busting wax since that was my favorite part of the hobby.
