Sponsored by Arcade Pontiac and produced by the Universal Match Corp.,Washington D.C., these matchbooks measure approximately 1 1/2" by 4 1/2" (when completely folded out) and feature small black-and-white photos of Washington Redskins with simulated autographs on the inside panel. The player's position and college, along with his height and weight, appear below the photo. The bottom half of the inside panel reads "This is one of 20 autographed pictures of the Washington Redskins compliments of Jack Blank, President Arcade Pontiac Co.," followed by the business' 1950s six-digit phone number, ADams 8500. The outside of the matchbook carries on its top half the Arcade Pontiac name along with a logo on a black and gold background. On the bottom half is shown the Redskins logo on a gold background. The matchbooks are unnumbered and checklisted below in alphabetical order. Although the covers read "20" to the set, it is thought that only 17-matchbooks were released in 1951 and 19 in 1952. Many of the matchbooks were released in both 1951 and 1952 with a few containing only very minor differences in the photo cropping. Otherwise, the two sets are indistinguishable. Thus, we've listed the two sets together for ease in cataloging. Major variations between the two years (only the Herman Ball cover) and covers reportedly issued only one year are listed below as such. The prices given are for full covers (with strikers) missing the actual matches. This is the form in which the matchbooks are most commonly found. Complete books with matches typically carry a 50% premium. Books missing the striker are considered VG at best. [Collapse]
