The 1955 Ashland/Aetna Oil Basketball set contains 96 black and white, unnumbered cards each measuring 2 5/8" by 3 3/4". There are two different backs for each card front, one with an Ashland Oil ad, the other with an Aetna Oil ad. Aetna cards are considered to be worth an additional premium of 25 percent above the prices listed below. The backs contain a player's vital statistics, his home town, and his graduation class. These thin-stocked cards are difficult to obtain and have been numbered in the checklist below, by team and alphabetically within each team. The cards were distributed one at a time at Ashland (Kentucky and West Virginia) or Aetna (Ohio) gas stations in the region of the particular college. The set contains 12 players each from eight colleges: Eastern Kentucky 1-12, Kentucky 13-24, Louisville 25-36, Marshall 37-48, Morehead 49-60, Murray 61-72, Western Kentucky 73-84, and West Virginia 85-96. The cards of smaller school players within this set seem to be in shorter supply than the cards of the larger schools. However, the prices below reflect the smaller demand for the cards of players from the smaller schools. The key cards in the set are the first cards of Adolph Rupp, Hall of Famer and legendary coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, Ed Diddle, and Laker player/announcer Hot Rod Hundley. The catalog designation for this set is UO18. [Collapse]
