These cards parallel the more commonly seen basic Signature inserts seeded into sealed factory sets of 2002 Upper Deck USA Baseball. The Sample variations can be readily distinguished from their more common counterparts in two areas: a) a large red "SAMPLE" stamp running diagonally across the back of each card and b) the lack of foil-stamped serial-numbering (the basic Signature inserts are all serial-numbered of 375). USA baseball had each player sign approximately 500 cardboard labels for the Signatures insert set. 375 of those labels were used for the Signatures insert cards. Less than 100 labels were used to build the Samples, of which were then distributed to the player's themselves with a small number of cards going to Upper Deck for quality control.
