The Mayo Tobacco Works of Richmond, Va., issued this set of 48 ballplayers about 1895. Some recent speculation has been made that this set was issued beginning in 1894. The cards contain sepia portraits although some pictures appear to be black and white. There are 40 different individuals known in the set; cards 1 to 28 appear in uniform, while the last twelve (29-40) appear in street clothes. Eight of the former also appear with variations in uniform. The player's name appears within the picture area and a "Mayo's Cut Plug" ad is printed in a panel at the base of the card. Similar to the football set issued around the same time, the cards have black blank backs. Due to the fact that N300's are found in off-grade, our pricing references the technical grade of "EX".
