2009-10 Upper Deck John Scott Young Guns RC

By Ryan Cracknell | Hobby Editor

Remember that feeling of excitement and pride you got watching Rocky for the first time? John Scott was the real-life equivalent at the 2016 NHL All-Star Game. His story is one for the ages (with a major motion picture in the vein of The Rookie or Miracle probably being discussed at this very moment). But even in the overriding joy of the moment, if you’re a collector, it’s the kind of thing you’ll want to be careful getting caught up in.

Unless you actually like paying more for something than you have to.

If you’re not familiar with John Scott, he’s a journeyman player with 11 career NHL points. Thanks to current All-Star voting practices, he was voted to play in the game in Nashville. A couple of weeks ago, Scott was traded from the Coyotes to the Montreal Canadiens and subsequently sent to the minors. That was coupled with reports that the NHL tried to get Scott to voluntarily withdraw from the game, even evoking his children into the conversation.

The All-Star Game rolls around and things get better. Scott was greeted with a thundering ovation, proceeded to score a couple of goals and was named the game’s MVP. It couldn’t have been better.

Perhaps more than any other time, fame is fleeting. Newspapers, 24-hour television news, the Internet — they’re all vying for our attention. The idea of 15 minutes of fame might be down to 14. There’s always something new in our timelines and feeds.

Right now, the sporting world is all about John Scott. Later today, something else is going to come along. If we’re being honest, it’s already starting to fade. The Super Bowl is less than a week away, baseball season is about to start spring training, the NBA has its own All-Star Game and hockey is getting back to their regularly scheduled programming.

To a certain extent, John Scott will forever be a folk legend. A hobby hero? Not so much.

As with every big event, John Scott cards have seen a lot of action over the last few days. Really, any action in his cards would be a significant jump. Adding a rookie or a couple of nice cards isn’t a bad thing. They’re reminders of Scott’s story, one that’s worthy of being remembered. Just remember that getting caught up in the emotion of a moment can cost you.

A couple of months back you could find the 2009-10 Upper Deck John Scott Young Guns Exclusives parallel /100 for $5. Over the weekend, that’s what some of the base versions were going for. Give it a few days and you should find the regular Young Guns back down around a dollar or two. Some, actually already are.

To date, John Scott has 100 different hockey cards to his name. He has 12 rookie cards in 2009-10 products. Since then, his cards have appeared in only four products.

I’m not saying don’t buy any John Scott cards. If you’re a fan, go for it. But be patient and don’t get caught up in the moment. He isn’t a 20-year-old prospect with a huge career ahead of him. Rather, the All-Star Game was his moment. And it’d be hard for anybody not to feel good about it. John Scott’s story will live on. The excitement and emotion surrounding it, not so much. Right now, people are talking a lot about John Scott. But unlike Rocky, there probably won’t be a sequel. His legend will live on but the interest in his cards probably won’t.
