They’re baaaaaaacck: Upper Deck includes Evolution video cards in World of Sports

They’re back — and this time they’ve got Michael Jordan in tow.
Upper Deck’s recently released World of Sports product includes a new batch of Evolution video cards — trading cards with actual video components embedded inside that can play highlights from the player — an innovation that sparked a mixed reaction from collectors last year and a war of words between two companies over who was first in the hobby with the idea.
While the hubbub might not be as loud this time around,the Evolution checklist does include a pretty big name in M.J.

While the cards were found in last year’s Upper Deck football set, this year it’s just a basketball group inside World of Sport. Besides Jordan, also to be found are Chris Paul and Alonzo Mourning. The cards show the players during their college days as Upper Deck is limited to using just NCAA logos with its licenses.
The cards include a minute of footage for each player and can be found approximately one in every 72 hobby packs and one in every 138 packs at retail — though not inside the packs but rather as a box-topper inclusion.

Are these box toppers in retail as well? That could be a mess as whoever opens the box will most likely take the topper. I hope these are in retail blaster boxes only, though the extra weight of the card will probably give away which blaster has it.
They aren’t wrapped the same way — so i presume they would just be inside the blaster box. last time, they were UNDER the packs in hobby boxes.
This is a bit odd. Given the odds of 1:72 hobby, that would be every other box right?
Or was it every 3 boxes. In any case, I would have thought there would be a ton of
them on ebay. And I saw a number of these boxes opened at my local hobby shop and
not one of these was pulled out. Kind of weird if the odds are correct.
In 2000 UPPER DECK released a product called POWER DECK. Anybody remember that great product. It failed. There are two problems with this. The first is dishonest card shops. They will open boxes just to get the EVOLUTION VIDEO card. I personally want the autograph Microsotft clip art card (not). The second problem is the battery. What happens when that runs down. At leaset the POWER DECK was on a CD and as long as you protect the cd you are good to go.
UPPER DECK you were a pretty good company with some good cards (not including WORLD OF SPORT). To bad your company was being ran by liars and thieves. RIP.
Joe, if you look at the video above before playing it, there are mini USB ports on them for charging. However, I don’t think a charger is provided in the box, so you’d have to pick up one (unless you have a phone with one). Even then, you’d need the voltage rating to make sure you didn’t overdue it.
xstream every battery has a life they can only be charged so many times then they die. this is still the dumbest idea for cards ever. the best of battery’s might last ya 3 ta 5 years then ya have to tear it apart and have and replace it or recell it.
okay wasnt impressed with them the first time around and guess what not so impressed with them this time either. i think upper deck needs to go back to what worked for them, id really like to see hologram cards come back, along with sweet insertsand bad *** die cuts , lets make card that makes you wanna look at the and admire them
Well, anything electronic is gonna need a battery. Why is it so stupid that you need to charge it? That’s like complaining that a TV remote needs batteries or a car needs gas. Panini’s needed a charge too.
I just bought the Hobby Box and pulled the Evolution Card for Michael Jordan….YIPEE I thought until I tried to get it to run. The only way to play it is to have it connected to the USB cord. The Battery says it is being charged, but it doesn’t charge at all, so a power source is necessary anytime you want to view it. The video graphics are really sensational though from MJ in his college years. I don’t know what its is worth, but I did pull out 3 signature cards and 1 memorabilia card all together valued over $100. I am not sure if it’s was worth the cost if the Jordan Card ends up not having a high value.
I pulled the Jordan to AND had the exact same issue with having to a USB to view the video clip cuz the battery was DOA. I have yet to find a value for the MJ EVO-1 CARD/VIDEO. Any idea what it might be worth today???
