Topps released 2013 Topps Archives this featuring designs of old sets with autographs from fan favorites throughout the years.

But you didn’t think colleting the base set was going to be easy, did you?

There are photo variations for some of the players. Right now, it seems to be with last year’s rookies. The gallery below is incomplete, but as we get more information and photos, we will update the post. Please keep in mind, this is a work in progress. If you see any others, let me know so we can update the post.

Topps released 2012 Turkey Red Football this week – an online-only product. The product shipped over the last couple of days with collectors finding autographs, minis, printing plates and photo variations.

The photo variations were seemingly a surprise. In the preview, Topps didn’t announce there would be different pictures for some of the cards, but it didn’t take long for dealers and collectors to spot the differences.

So far, we’ve spotted 10 football rookies with photo variations. The first card in the picture is what we presume to the photo variation and the second card is the base. However, as more information comes out, this could change.

Here is what we have so far, and we will update the gallery if more variations pop up.

One of the most popular products of the football season released today. Panini’s 2012 National Treasures hit the shelves.

Based on football card sales this year, this was probably one of the most anticipated products. National Treasures Rookie Cards are usually among the most sought after cards every year. With the attention and success the elite level rookies received this season, National Treasures is certainly one product to watch.

The value of previous sets show just how much collectors seek these cards.

One of the most collected players from 2011 draft season is San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (check out his OPG here). His National Treasures card came into the 2012 season with a book value of $120.

It now has a book value of $500-$900 – the most valuable Rookie Card from 2011 National Treasures.

This year, collectors will be on the lookout for Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson foremost. Then players such as Trent Richardson, Ryan Tannehill, Doug Martin and Alfred Morris are going to follow suit.

McFarlane Toys is shrinking its sports line of figurines.

This summer, NFL smALL Pros Series 1 will debut with 2.5-inch high cartoonish figurines of several football stars. The figurines are meant to be fun and seem to be geared toward children. However, it includes a chase element for adults who love their collectibles.

The first group of NFL players includes Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck, Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Aaron Rodgers, Troy Polamalu, Jason Witten, Peyton Manning and Trent Richardson.

RG3 (alternate uniform), Luck (alternate uniform), Rodgers (beanie and mustache) and Manning (with helmet) have four rare chase versions, and Richardson (TBD) has an ultra-rare chase version.

Each figure comes dissembled and in a foil bag that will not allow you to see which NFL stars is inside.

smALL Pros Series 1 is scheduled to come out in July. Player list is subject to change.

Between turkey, stuffing and Black Friday sales, Topps released 2012 Triple Threads Football last Friday.

For many, the anticipation for the high-end product was high. What names would be used for the 2012 Rookies? What combination would end up on cards together?

An interesting aspect of Triple Threads has been the White Whales, printing plates but with a different name.

Printing plate are collectible as 1-of-1 anyway, but giving it a name synonymous with elusiveness seems to add a different aspect.

Panini America is doing its part to spread holiday cheer this season. It got Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck and Trent Richardson to don Christmas hats for special holiday-themed memorabilia cards.

The only way to get these cards is in Panini’s Black Friday promotion.

The 2012 NFL rookies wore hats specific to each player’s team. Luck’s hat has a bit more blue in it while RG3’s hat has that Redskins maroon color.

Companies have had holiday cards in the past. Pro Set regularly put Santa Claus cards into its football card packs in the early 1990s.

In 1999, Upper Deck featured baseball star Ken Griffey Jr., in a Santa hat and then embedded pieces of the hat in cards. It was issued to UD employees and some direct dealers.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Griffey card is the writing on the back: “You have received a special holiday-worn Santa hat card straight from Santa’s special workshop in Carlsbad, California. We hope you enjoy this piece of “collectible cheer” as we at the Upper Deck Company wish you a very happy holiday season.”

There’s something new this week with 2012 Topps Triple Threads – oversized autographed handprint cards.

Not new to Topps, but certainly a new element in football that will be included in one of Topps’ high-end products.

“We put a special Cal Ripken “Touched by Greatness” card in Archives Baseball that created much buzz,” Topps said in a press release. “The card included Cal’s autograph as well an impression of his actual inked handprint. We are now ready to blow this idea up and go Prime Time with our NFL products.”

Collectors can get these cards by finding a redemption in Triple Threads packs.

The subjects of these cards are all rookies, and here is the checklist:

– Justin Blackmon
– Brandon Weeden
– Ryan Tannehill
– Trent Richardson
– Michael Floyd

Triple Threads is the first NFL product to feature the handprint autographed cards, but it won’t be the last. The cards will also be in 2012 Topps Supreme, Valor and Five Star.

Topps Chrome and color parallels go together. The more color, the better the box – at least that’s how many collectors feel.

Since last week’s release of 2012 Topps Chrome Football, colored parallels have slowly made their out of packs into collectors’ hands.

The most popular parallels in 2012 Topps Chrome Football seem to be Black, Gold and Red, numbered to 25, 10 and five, respectively. Obviously, the low numbering has a lot to do with the collectability of the cards.

Look at these particular auctions:

- 2012 Topps Chrome Andrew Luck Red Refractor Auto /5 – With a little more than an hour left the card is at more than $3,600.
- 2012 Topps Chrome Andrew Luck Gold Refractor Auto /10 – This card is approaching $1,600 with three days left
- 2012 Topps Chrome Robert Griffin III Red Refractor Auto /5 – Three days left, the card is at $1,525
- 2012 Topps Chrome Robert Griffin III Gold Refractor Auto /10 – With two days left the card is just over $1,000.

However, when it comes to the player it almost doesn’t matter if there is color or not on the autographed card. This RG3 refractor autograph is already at $259 and this Luck autograph with the photo variation is more than $300.

Beyond Luck and RG3, some of the other rookies seem to be bringing in decent prices as well.

But it seems only the rare cards are getting big value from rookies not named Robert Griffin III or Andrew Luck.

Panini America’s 2012 Gridiron Football came out this week with a slightly tweaked name and some impressive photos on the base cards.

Some of the most popular cards from the set, however, have barely anything to do with photos.

The pull out signed jersey cards, Gridiron Gems, are garnering some of the most interest from card collectors.

Swatches of white jerseys are signed in either gold or silver ink. The jersey slides in and out of the card.

Update: The cards do not come all the way out of the card. It seems glued to piece of cardboard and can only be pulled up with a few centimeters remaining in the card before the design stops collectors pulling the card completely out of the housing.

Topps’ 2012 complete football factory set released last week into retail and hobby shops.

Each box came with 440 base cards, including all the top rookie and veterans. The factory sets also come with different bonuses. But that could be one of four things depending on the box you find.

The most common – which was on the original sell sheet – is a five-card pack of numbered orange parallel cards. But it’s not the only type of factory set floating out there.

Each box clearly labels the front that specifies the bonus.

Of course, collectors enjoy parallels, but the rookie variations could be some of the most popular cards to come out of the factory sets.

The five rookies are Luck, Griffin, Trent Richardson, Justin Blackmon and Doug Martin.
