Chadwick Boseman talks 42, fame, autographs and collecting in this exclusive interview with Beckett Media. << By Chris Olds

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

DALLAS | It was a Tuesday for everyone, but for Chadwick Boseman an evening screening of 42 was the third leg of a long jaunt around the country, one that began in Washington, D.C., and included a stop hours earlier at Wrigley Field.

After a VIP-only early viewing of the film telling the life’s story of Major League Baseball‘s social pioneer, Jackie Robinson, the 30-year-old unassumingly walked into Theater 5 of the Angelika Film Center wearing a red, white and blue plaid shirt and weathered blue jeans as the house lights slowly raised and the film’s credits rolled behind him.

He received a standing ovation. And then he did a 20-minute question-and-answer session with the assembled film devotees before a brief one-on-one exclusive with Beckett Media about the film and, of course, collecting.

Naturally, the first question … has it started to sink in yet how life-changing this role is?

“No, I mean it’s just now hitting I guess,” he said. “You’ve done the movie, you’ve sat on it editing it, you’ve seen it, they’ve set the release date and you’re fine-tuning it. But we’ve been doing this for a while and you’re releasing a baby for everybody else. It’s a weird feeling.”

So does he think he could have endured what Robinson went through?

“I don’t know,” he said, pausing to reflect. “I would say no. I would need God to tell me. I would need some sort of sign. Maybe Jackie had that. Maybe that is what helped him get through. Me, how I am right now, I’m not sure if I could do it. I’d be fighting back. I’d be in jail. I’d be dead.”

Boseman admitted in the Q&A session that he played more basketball than anything in high school, never testing his baseball skills past Little League. He said years ago his dad told him he should have tried being a baseball player — and his dad’s fandom is what helped fuel his.

“I followed teams, but didn’t necessarily really have any favorite players. I liked the Braves, I liked the Dodgers,” Boseman said. “My dad is an avid Braves fan who tapes games now. So when I go home I will end up watching whole games to spend time with him. I’m more of a watch the sixth-to-ninth innings and watch the highlights guy.”

Talking Movies
So, does he have any favorite sports movies?

“It’s funny when you say sports movies, people a lot of times don’t include boxing, but I would,” he said. “I love Rocky. The first Rocky is an Oscar-winning film. Obviously, I loved Remember the Titans. I love Major League — it’s funny. I love Bull Durham — telling him to hit the mascot — I love that whole thing. Sports movies are definitely some of my favorites.”

Now he’s going to be one of the guys seen on those Hollywood highlight reels, one of those moment-makers. So, has that sunk in yet?

“Wow. No. You’re the first person to say that to me,” he said, pausing to absorb the thought. “Thanks a lot, man.”

Collecting Cards
So, did he ever collect baseball cards as a kid?

“No, not at all,” he said. “I had friends that definitely collected and I would keep up with them that way, but I was never really into it like that.”

How about starting a Robinson card collection now?

“I probably would — you know what, I have one,” he said, interrupting himself. “I do have one. It was a gift.”

Then, I offered some stats about Robinson that he clearly hadn’t heard about. His reaction to Robinson’s Rookie Card only being $2,000?

“I should buy it,” he said, laughing.

How about all of his cards for about $59,000?

“That seems low. Is it going to go up because of this movie?” he asked. “So the card I have could go up?”

He seemed quietly proud of that possibility, inwardly emotive — just like his performance on the screen.

Amazed by Autographs
Now, with an award-worthy leading performance in a major film, naturally that means he’ll be signing more autographs and getting more attention.

“I may be a little uncomfortable with that feeling,” he admitted, perhaps even squirming a bit.

Then, he was told his autographs have an asking price of around $200 a pop on eBay for baseballs and photos.

“My autograph?” he said, pausing for a few moments and looking across the room. “My autograph is on there now? Oh wow.”

Then, he perked up a bit and stopped to ask a question of his own, playing the role of a rookie to the whole autograph experience.

“Let me ask you a question. The more autographs I sign, does it diminish the value?”

After a quick lesson about supply-and-demand and, of course, timing, Boseman also brought up how he knows props can be a hot commodity, too.

“Somebody asked me for my uniform from the movie,” Boseman said. “Obviously, I don’t have that anyway, Warner Bros. has it, but people have called me and asked about that.”

According to Warner Bros., there won’t be any prop auctions from 42, but one of his jerseys used in the film will be donated to the Negro League Hall of Fame and Museum on April 11.

With the release of the film about a month away, Boseman also was interested to hear that some posters for the film were in high demand on the auction block. A 4×6-foot “moments” bus shelter poster showing Robinson and teammate Pee Wee Reese sold for $100 on eBay earlier this week. Surprising?

“You are surprising me as we speak, man,” he said. “That’s crazy.”

Autograph Hunting
So, if there was one autograph of a baseball player Boseman would want, who would it be?

“For baseball players, I would love to get Josh Hamilton‘s autograph — that would be cool. I would love to meet him,” he said. “I’m pretty sure I’m going to meet some of the Dodgers, so Matt Kemp would be a real cool autograph. And Ken Griffey Jr. of course.”

Then he jumped right into another thought, almost as if he were kicking himself thinking back about his experiences while making the film.

“You know, what I can’t believe is I didn’t get Hank Aaron‘s autograph,” he said. “I met him a couple of times. I have to remember to get him — what am I thinking? The next time I see him, I’ll get him to sign my 42 hat.”

Those hats, by the way, have been selling for about $50 a pop on eBay — without the Aaron signature.

Considering Cardboard & Collecting …
So, if he could appear on a baseball card with someone else who would it be? A Boseman-as-Jackie card along with …

“Wow, that’s a tough one,” he said, stopping to think. “Honestly, I would go with Hank Aaron. That would be amazing to be on there. I loved when he came to set as he was a consultant. He just has a good heart. I think it would be cool to be on a card — the guy who played Jackie Robinson with the real Hank Aaron.”

After finishing up the questions, a few lingering VIPs and a couple of kids were armed with promotional mini posters hoping to get an autograph outside the Angelika’s office door. Boseman obliged, signing and personalizing at least three and one for a small boy much like the Ed Charles character seen in the film.

As Boseman signed the last two posters with a black Sharpie, the stack of a few remaining posters fell to the floor from atop a photocopying machine that had made for an impromptu writing surface. As someone bent down to pick one up and the group moved toward the door, where a couple more fans had posters handy as well, Boseman offered another thought. It was one that perhaps shows that he’s more of a collector than he let on after all — or at least that he might be collecting a bit sometime soon — once he’s not doing three cities in a single day, of course.

“I don’t even have one of those,” he said. “I need one.”

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Imagine spending your career — your life — in baseball but never making The Show as a player. Then imagine making the show but not knowing it until 25 years later.

In the case of Alex Smith, the show is Bull Durham.

As part of our “Cardboard Cameos” story in the upcoming Sports Movies Issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly, we’ve examined several films and spotted real-world baseball cards in some scenes. As it turns out, a real-world baseball card, Smith’s 1987 Durham Bulls ProCards release, got some screen time as a bookmark used by Annie Savoy as she decided to read Walt Whitman poetry to Ebby Calvin “Nuke” LaLoosh.

And Smith, now the Northeast Scouting Supervisor for the Seattle Mariners, had no idea.

“I received your message, ironically on my birthday,” said Smith, who turned 50 on Monday. “What a unique, interesting gift to find out my baseball card was used in the movie. Never knew that! My initial thoughts? Pretty cool!”

Interestingly, Smith said he had a chance to be in the film that starred Kevin Costner but he had to make a career decision.

“The funny thing about it is that I was asked to participate in the movie,” said Smith, who was a Bull for just one season, batting .323 with 10 home runs. “They reached out, I believe, to most of the players on that 1987 team. At least I was. I was also asked to participate in instructional league that year, so I had a choice to make. I chose instructional league and gave up my opportunity to be in the movie.”

Smith appears on just a handful of baseball cards from his five seasons in the minor leagues, but there is a happy ending for him on cardboard. While he’s now with the Mariners, he made his MLB card debut five years ago on his only certified autograph card. How? As a scout with the Montreal Expos, he appears in the 2008 Bowman Scouts Autographs set. Why? Because he’s the guy who signed Ryan Zimmerman.

Ironically, Durham isn’t the only baseball movie Smith appears in. Turns out, he was a Major Leaguer … a teammate of Jack Parkman.

“Opportunity rang again when Major League II came out and was being filmed in Baltimore, where I live,” Smith said of the 1994 film. “They ended up casting a lot of former player, scouts, managers, etc., from the Baltimore area. I ended up playing Reveto, who was the third baseman for the Chicago White Sox.”

So, does he have any copies of his now-famous Bulls card?

“Absolutely, I have quite a few of them,” he said. “[And] I still have the $5 check that Topps gives you [as a minor-leaguer] for a card contract.”

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

With a new blockbuster sports movie coming next month in 42, the latest Sports Movies Issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly is set to arrive as well with our latest look at collecting things from a slightly different perspective or with a slightly different approach.

You know, one that lets you explore stuff that’s already out there once again — or perhaps dig a little deeper on the auction block where one might not normally look.

Sometimes, it’s a real-world story that shows up on the big screen like in the case of Jackie Robinson‘s tale or even someone perhaps less-remembered in history like Vince Papale here. (In the case of Papale, being the subject of a film where he was played by Mark Wahlberg sparked serious demand for the value of his 1977 Topps Rookie Card.) Other times, we get fictional characters and stories that we all remember and appreciate over time for some of those similar peculiarities or details that we latch onto as collectors in real life.

For this issue, we’re curious about what you think, what you remember and what you know about sports films. Here’s the latest 20 Questions on the topic … after the jump.

We’ve made our picks for our 20 favorite sports movies in the past, but for the next issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly — The Sports Movies Issue — we want to hear from you.

If you have pride in your Yankees film, if you have a field of dreams out back — or maybe just a sandlot — or if you just like the money shown to you (on DVD, of course), then we want to know about it.

Heck, if you collect items relating to your favorite film, even better … tell us about that, too.

Tell us, in a comment along with your name and location … What is your favorite sports movie … and why?

With any new release, there will be marketing campaigns, which in the past meant materials that ultimately become memorabilia.

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary

The one-sheet for the latest baseball movie on the horizon — Moneyball, starring Brad Pitt — has arrived, and it perhaps carries a non-traditional feel for what should be a less-than traditional sports film.

Based on the 2003 best-selling book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, the film will dramatize the story of Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane and his non-traditional ways of trying to build a competitive team with the small-market, low-budget Athletics fighting the behemoths of Major League Baseball such as the New York Yankees.

“There are rich teams, and there are poor teams. Then there’s 50 feet of crap. And then there’s us.”

Moneyball‘s central theme is that gut feeling, rather than analytical thought, had permeated throughout baseball and its scouting departments — and that because of its immense disadvantage financially, Beane’s team needed to think, build and draft differently to outsmart their competition. That included statistical analysis — sabermetrics — instead of instinct. (See the trailer after the jump.)

The film stars Pitt as Beane, Jonah Hill as Assistant GM Peter Brand (Paul DePodesta, now with the Mets requested his name not be used for the role), Philip Seymour Hoffman as manager Art Howe and Robin Wright as Beane’s ex-wife, Sharon.

With any new release, there will be marketing campaigns, which, in the past, meant materials that ultimately become memorabilia for many popular movies. While most promotion these days is done online or in digital form via press kits on CD — we’ll see what kind of materials arrive in the coming weeks to promote Moneyball before its Sept. 23 release — there’s still one king of the movie memorabilia world … well, at least not including movie-used props.

And that’s the one-sheet.

Click here to view the embedded video.

“Posters are definitely the top-selling movie memorabilia items, ” said Wayne Woodward of MovieGoods.com, a Morrisville, N.C.-based movie memorabilia mega-dealer. “There are two elements that make for a top-selling movie poster: The artwork or images on the poster have to be visually appealing, and the movie itself has to make some kind of emotional connection to people.

“That emotional connection can be on a dramatic level, or a great sports comedy level such as Caddyshack or Bull Durham,” Woodward said. “The nature of so many sports films is emotional, such as underdog stories – The Rookie, The Fighter, Miracle, Rudy — or overcoming obstacles stories that the movies naturally make an emotional connection with people.”

Sports movie memorabilia and movie memorabilia in general is a largely undocumented area of collecting — no extensive catalogs or price guides exist, unlike sports cards — and, ironically, it’s the common item, the poster, that draws the most attention. Want even more irony? Strong pieces of movie memorabilia, including rare finds, can often be found at a fraction of the price for somewhat everyday pieces of sports memorabilia.

“There aren’t any great sources of documentation on the value of vintage movie posters,” Woodward said. “Some websites have tried in the past to be the key industry source but found it was hard to keep their databases up-to-date and accurate on the market value of specific posters. This can be a hindrance to determining the value of posters you own.

“The eBay marketplace was a good barometer for a while, but many top sellers in the industry stopped using eBay due to high costs of selling on that market,” said Woodward, noting that MovieGoods opened in 1999. “Our many years of experience in the business does give us an advantage in helping sellers value and possibly sell their original poster collections for them, which we’ve done many times over the years.”

YOUR TAKE: WE WANT TO KNOW …

We’ll be focusing an upcoming issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly on sports movies and the various types of memorabilia found for some of them as well as the ways you can collect the reel-life stars that you see either in the theater or on DVD.

We want to know …

1. What are your favorite sports movies?

2. Do you have any favorite movie items made in the past?

3. What movie props would be dream items for you to own?

4. What might you want to read about for sports movies?

5. What movie tie-ins would you want trading card companies to try?

Leave us a comment or send me an email (address above) …the best responses and stories will be collected and published in the issue.

You might have missed it a few weeks ago in a sea of Charlie Sheen autograph news.

You see, tonight will be Sheen-Co De Mayo at the ballpark — at least in Lake Elsinore, Calif. — and the bobblehead doll seen here will enter the memorabilia market as a limited number of baseball fans will own one after the game. [Editor's note: I want!]

What else is planned for the big ballpark “holiday”? Click here to find out …

Leaf announced Tuesday that it has added an extra celebrity autograph to the fold for its upcoming 2011 Pop Century non-sports set.

Charlie Sheen.

The eccentric star of Major League and several other movies completed a signing with the company on Saturday, according to company owner Brian Gray.

“We are confident that demand for Charlie’s signature is at an all-time high,” Gray said, “and customers will be excited for this awesome checklist improvement at no additional cost.”

Sheen’s only other autographed card is his 2004 Playoff Honors Fans of the Game card. Sheen signed just 250 copies and it checks in at No. 11 on this month’s Beckett Sports Card Monthly Hot List at $300. The standard card, above, is $3.
