How much for this Lou Brock? You wouldn't believe it if I typed it.

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary & Opinion

Before the arrival of Rickey Henderson many years ago, Lou Brock was the king of stolen bases in MLB. He’s a relatively accessible signer and an autograph that’s not tough to find — and not very expensive — with some looking.

But his autograph on a short-printed 2001 Topps Archives reprint of his Rookie Card?

That’s a different story — a story that apparently should offer us all a brief respite from the notion that there isn’t life after cardboard turns a certain age even in today’s seemingly over-saturated, it’s-been-done-before-I-already-have-it environment.

How much for the Brock? You wouldn’t believe it if I typed it.

For those who didn’t click, that’s about $3,000 more — if not even more — than it should be for a typical Brock autograph, the only difference here that it’s a card that’s limited to just 50 copies — one of 14 short-printed Group A autographs in that first two series of Archives, a reprint-based brand (click here for a checklist and OPG) that lasted a few years before it was revived with a slightly different concept last year.

While one may think that some online auction shenanigans were in play here, there were 20 other cards from that set sold in the last month or so on eBay that have topped $500. Nearly all were A-list Hall of Famers and nearly all are short-prints limited to 50 copies. A few different buyers emerged victorious on this one, which, according to the auction listing, was purchased as a set by a group and broken up to be sold. Feedback has been left on several of the big-dollar auctions by the buyers.

The others?

–

The autographs in that year’s set were found one in every 20 packs — at hobby or retail — but Group A cards were found at a rate of one in every 3,049 packs some 117-times harder to find than the easiest signature group.

That, combined with the obvious drawing power of most of those players, along with an apparent run of interest between a few bidding parties has led to what we have today, little over a decade after one could find them in packs at, say, a neighborhood Kmart or a hobby shop.

It’s not been uncommon for the biggest names — except for Mays — to sell between $300 and $600. Mays has sold for more. Meanwhile, wax boxes from the two series are still available in online auctions for about $200 at the most with the realistic odds that a Group A auto is not inside as they fall one in every 153rd or so wax box.

So, what should one make of this? Do you chalk it up to the break-up value of a tough set emerging on the market for some hungry bidders for the first time in years? Do you just think it’s the auction block reaction of a couple of interested parties? Is it a realization that once that first month or two’s supply of a product’s eBay floods is dissipated — and over time — even seemingly obtainable but rare cards can be much, much more in-demand than we might think?

Or, could it be the star power of the players involved and some deep-pocketed, old-fashioned collecting interest?

I’d say it’s perhaps all of the above — and more — and while I’d want to go dig through my autograph stashes from all my 2001 Kmart runs where I cleared shelves of packs and blasters in search of some nice ink I know that Group A was one that eluded me quite a bit that year.

Apparently, those cards escaped the grasp of a few of you, too.

By Josh Trudell | Contributing Editor

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas | The grin on Tim Kane’s face was matched only by the size of the “30″ on the back of his jersey.

Kane, winner of the Topps and Minor League Baseball “Make Your Pro Debut” contest, signed his one-day contract with the Corpus Christi Hooks, the double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, on Thursday.

“This is an experience I know I’ll never forget, and my son and wife will never forget,” Kane, a Maryland police officer, said before signing his deal with team owner and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan.

Meeting Ryan was the icing on a day that included a complete tour of Whataburger Field, a press conference to announce the signing, warming up and playing catch on the field with the Hooks players, and sitting in the dugout with his son, Peyton, for the first three innings of a game against the Frisco Roughriders.

As Tim admired his new jersey in the locker room, Tim’s son, Peyton, was presented with boxes of 2012 Topps Pro Debut and 2012 Topps Heritage Minors cards. Tearing into them, he quickly found a card of Nick Tropeano, who was sitting four stalls over from his dad.

Tropeano was happy to sign it for him.

Peyton was the reason Tim initially entered the contest, a joint operation between Topps, MiLB and the Hooks. His winning essay said, in part, “Baseball has been the bond we have shared since the day he was born.”

It’s a bond that Tim’s wife, Danielle, said has extended into their family for years. Tim took Danielle to her first baseball game when they were dating, and Peyton became hooked when the family went to a Bowie Baysox game. The opponents, the Erie SeaWolves, took time to talk with Peyton, quizzing him about school and his Little League games. Since then, his mother said, Peyton has pored over baseball information in every form, from books to apps.

Tim wrote in his winning essay that he and his son had recently started collecting cards. At the field, he said he owned all the Topps set from 1986 to the present, and was working on filling out a set of 1975 Topps. His favorite card, however, is a 1972 Topps card of Ryan.

As the evening wore on, Tim and Peyton moved from the dugout to Ryan’s suite, where they sat with the legend and listened to him talk about his most- and least-favorite stadiums and hitters to face.

When asked for a scouting report on his new player, Ryan chuckled.

“This is what you call a blind sign,” he said.

One of the highlights for Tim was being photographed for his own card, which will appear in 2013 Topps Pro Debut.

Having been on possibly more baseball cards than any other player — at least of those in the stadium — Ryan said the card will also be something Kane will enjoy. He knows it was an experience even for him all those years ago.

“I think he’ll take a lot of pride in that, and it’ll be meaningful to him,” Ryan said. “I’m sure his son will take a lot of pride out of it. The first time you actually see yourself on a baseball card, it’s pretty exciting.”

Look for much more on Kane’s day with the Hooks in the upcoming Families Issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly.

A number items up for grabs in the first Topps.com auction this week shed some light on the business side of the game.

The business side of baseball cards isn’t one that manufacturers often like to discuss, but a number items up for grabs in the first Topps.com auction this week shed some light on that side of the game.

How? With a glimpse at some old contracts that are up for sale.

Now, these aren’t anything new — contracts have been part of past Topps Vault auctions since 2001 — but a handful of these have terms of the agreements attached to the signed pages. One example? Topps paid former Texas Rangers pitcher Nolan Ryan $20,000 for the right to reproduce and sell his baseball cards in bronze for two years from 1990 to 1992. (Oddly, the contract is dated near the end of the term.)

That’s a far cry from the typical $75-a-year extension seen on many of the typical card contracts — amounts that, of course, don’t include royalties paid later.

Another contract, for an Eddie Mathews autograph deal in 1997, shows that the Hall of Famer signed 1,000 reprints of his Rookie Card for use in products that year and the following year for a total of $5,000 plus 100 extra copies of the card. That’s $5 an autograph for those not as quick on the math — with enough extras to make that even more profitable. (Don’t think Matthews got a bad deal — this writer got his autos the cheapest way possible around that time … for free through the mail.)

–

A third contract, this time from 1989 is for Hall of Famer Yogi Berra. This one, which features a full signature with his nickname included, is for $500 for the right to include him in Bowman. It looks like his 1989 Bowman Reprint Inserts card.

The last contract with interesting financials includes a 1990 Juan Marichal deal, which paid him $2,500 for his appearance in the 1991 Glossy All-Stars set. The Hall of Famer was an honorary captain for the event.

Obviously the baseball card market has intensified since these deals — so the numbers likely don’t mean much a couple decades later — but it’s interesting to see the amounts.

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

For one Maryland man collecting is a family affair, and it’s his son who drove him to do something he’s never done before.

Next month, on April 18, Tim Kane will become a minor league baseball player.

Kane, of Millersville, Md., will be a member of the Corpus Christi (Texas) Hooks for a day as the winner of Topps‘ Make Your Pro Debut contest found in packs of 2012 Topps Heritage Minors baseball cards.

“I hope to win this contest so when my son opens his next pack of Pro Debut,” he wrote in his winning essay, “I can see the shock and joy when he realizes his father is on that card.”

The newest member of the Houston Astros’ Double-A squad will get to spend time with team owner Nolan Ryan, be subjected to the media at a press conference where the his one-day deal will be signed, have his own locker in the clubhouse, a uniform and an equipment package for the game. In addition, Kane will take part in pre-game workouts, batting practice, shag fly balls in the outfield, eat from the clubhouse spread, throw out the first pitch, present the lineup card to the umpires, spend time in the broadcast booth, spend time in the owner’s box, chow with the team after the game and walk home with the lineup card. (Does sound like he’ll be riding the bench, but …)

And, perhaps most importantly, he’ll have his first baseball card appear in 2013 Topps Pro Debut, which arrives on June 5.

Why is that part important? Well, it all goes back to his family — and collecting.

“I am doing this contest for the most-passionate baseball fan in my life, my 8-year-old son,” Kane wrote. “Baseball has been the bond that we have shared since the day he as born. … Recently we began to collect baseball cards together.

“Since we regularly attend minor league games regularly, I thought Topps Pro Debut would be the perfect set to collect together. Words can’t describe the joy on my son’s face when he opens a pack of cards and gets a player we have seen play such as Brandon Douglas, Bryan Pounds or Rob Brantly. Even though these players are not household names yet, in my son’s eyes they are his idols.”

Beckett Media will be on hand in Corpus Christi next month to document Kane’s tale for an upcoming Families Issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly.

Topps has released the final checklist for 2013 Topps Series 1. See it here.

Update: Topps has released the final Series 1 checklist. See it at the end of the story.

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Topps unveiled the first look at the 2013 edition of its flagship baseball card set on Friday, and it’s one that just might excite collectors of the longest-running MLB brand.

And it just might excite fans of “the chase,” too.

—

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

—

The chase this year is the chase of history — the pennant, the record books and more in MLB history — while the company says it will offer more to chase in its flagship product, too, which in its 61st year of full-size release.

Every 36-pack hobby box will contain one autograph or Relic card, while every HTA Jumbo box will contain three — one auto and two Relics — when it arrives on Jan. 25.

The base set will consist of 330 cards each with Gold parallels limited to 2,013 copies and Black parallels limited to 62. New this year will be Pink parallels limited to 50 (a nod to the popular Breast Cancer Awareness cards in football) and Desert Camo foil parallels (a nod to the military) limited to 99. Rounding out the offerings will be Emerald foil (1:6), Platinum 1/1s, hobby-only printing plates and a partial-parallel set of silks (100 players, limited to 50).

The metallic manufactured Relics will return in a new form for 2013 with MVP and Cy Young award winner cards as well as Proven Mettle Coin Cards. Each has an embedded piece of metal with an appropriate design for the award or a coin-like finish. They will be found one per Jumbo box or one per case in hobby. The Proven Mettle cards will have three parallels — Copper (/99), Wrought Iron (/50) and Steel (/10).

The autograph lineup is a bit deeper this year with a mix of modern, retro and diecut designs. Chasing History will note 30 or more achievers from the past and present, while the Chasing the Dream set will showcase 20-plus potential superstars in the making. The Cut to the Chase cards will showcase just five notable players on signed diecut cards limited to just 10 copies apiece, while Chasing History 1/1 cuts will highlight notable players and others in history.

The Greats autograph cards will highlight 15 players via on-card sigs and will only be found in Hobby and HTA packs, while the Calling Cards set will be even smaller with just five. Speaking of small, the 1972 Topps baseball design will be found in Mini form in packs with 10 players signing minis that will be limited to just 10 copies.

Autographed Relics will only be found in Hobby and HTA packs with auto-mem versions of the Chasing History, Chasing the Dream and Cut to the Chase sets, while The Greats, Calling Cards and World Series Champions also will be represented. Each of these will be limited to 50 or less with the World Series most plentiful and three of the sets limited to as few as five cards per player.

The Relic lineup will follow that of the aforementioned signatures — Chasing History, Chasing the Dream, Cut to the CHase, TheGreats, Calling Cards, 1972 Topps Minis, World Series Champions all will have Relic versions. Four of those sets will be limited to just 25 copies while the World Series Relics will be limited to 100 and the first two sets mentioned will not be numbered.

In the Name Relics will utilize full letters from MLB All-Stars’ warmup jerseys. These 1/1s will only be found in Hobby and HTA packs.

The biggest memorabilia addition to Topps, though, are 30 1/1 Ultimate Chase Autograph Relics — a mix of cuts, booklets and jumbo patches all with autographs. Look for bat knobs, patches and more for the likes of Babe Ruth, Roberto Clemente, Nolan Ryan and Stan Musial among others.

Lastly, the insert card lineup will be comprised of unsigned/non-memorabilia versions of six sets mentioned above — Chasing History (50 cards), Chasing the Dream (25), Cut to the Chase (25), The Greats (30), Calling Cards (15)and 1972 Minis (50). The Greats will be a Hobby-exclusive with a Gold parallel version limited to just 99 copies. That set will include Ernie Banks, Johnny Bench, Roberto Clemente, Ken Griffey Jr., Rickey Henderson, Derek Jeter, Willie Mays, Alex Rodriguez and Mike Schmidt.

Players already committed to have autographs in the product, according to the preliminary checklist, are Griffey, Mays, Reggie Jackson, Stan Musial, Ryan, Henderson, Evan Longoria, Don Mattingly, Trevor Bauer, Gary Carter (stickers), Brett Lawrie, Buster Posey, Giancarlo Stanton, Frank Thomas, Mike Moustakas, David Price, Jose Bautista, Cal Ripken Jr. and Mike Schmidt to name a few.

For player-used Relics, expect to find Yoenis Cespedes, Yu Darvish, Prince Fielder, Griffey, Bryce Harper, Josh Hamilton, Musial, Ripken, Ryan, Stephen Strasburg, Mike Trout, Justin Verlander, Derek Jeter and many others.

With Beckett Sports Card Monthly, we intentionally take a step back away from the obvious — we leave that for the single-sport magazines — and instead delve into bigger topics that we feel are timed best to what’s going on, what’s coming up or what’s on the minds of collectors.

In short, it’s where we give readers a little more to read about your hobby each and every month.

Here’s a look back at its offerings of 2012 via its covers.

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Since its high-end arrival earlier this month, 2012 Topps Five Star — the most expensive pack of Topps baseball cards ever made — has been one that’s generated more drool, more talk and more debate than most products this year.

While the initial wave of cards has been priced (click here for a Five Star checklist and OPG), the impact of this one arguably may not be known for some time. Could it spark more high-end to come? Could a flood of rarities now equal genuine scarcity later? Or, could it be a one-time experiment? Only time will tell.

For now — and for the next issue of Beckett Baseball where we’ll take a look at more from Five Star — here are 20 questions about the $500-per-pack product that we want to hear your answers for. How would you grade it? What did you like? What did you not like? Give us your take on each question — or add a comment if you want at the end.

We take a look at some of the $500-per-pack product's final checklists for the base set and autographs.

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary

The final checklist for the first Topps high-end baseball card release, 2012 Five Star, has arrived just days before the $500 per-pack product does.

Interestingly, there are 80 cards listed for the product’s base set — no base set previously was announced or even previewed — and the final details on the per-pack inclusions have not been disclosed other than there will be five autographs or Relics per pack. (Update: One base card per is likely.) There also appear to be parallels for some sets, which aren’t noted on the released checklist. (Click here for a Five Star checklist and OPG.)

But what we do know is that each box was slated to include two autographs (one active player, one retired player), one autographed Relic, one autographed booklet or extra autograph and a jumbo Relic, bat nameplate or bat knob card inside.

(Click here for our preview story with a full gallery and poll questions.)

Get a look at some of the final checklist’s inclusions for the base set and all autograph sets … after the jump.

Base set (80 cards) — This one perhaps symbolically leads off with Topps’ poster boy for 2012, Bryce Harper. It includes 30 Hall of Famer or retired players and 50 actives. Hall of Famers here include Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Nolan Ryan, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Rickey Henderson, Jackie Robinson and Sandy Koufax to name a few. The retired non-Hall of Famers? Ken Griffey Jr. and Don Mattingly. (And, if you’re wondering, it’s 11 New York Yankees in the base set.)

But since talking about base cards are a bit like examining the lugnuts on a Lamborghini, we’ll move on …

—

Five Star active autographs (43 signers; one per pack) — First, we’ll start off with the Yankee Count™ and, interestingly, there’s just one to be found here, Robinson Cano.

All players are signed on-card for this one, though quantities are not yet known. They are likely to vary as the set includes the likes of Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton, David Wright, Roy Halladay Joe Mauer and Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera along with rookies and relative newcomers Harper, Yu Darvish, Trevor Bauer, Brett Lawrie, Eric Hosmer, Giancarlo Stanton, Yoenis Cespedes, Will Middlebrooks and Mike Trout.

Possible worst-case scenario pulls here include Nelson Cruz, Pablo Sandoval, Paul Goldschmidt, Mike Napoli and Madison Bumgarner.

—

Five Star Quotable autographs (active; 20 players) — This smaller selection of more-limited autographs will include extra phrases written by the players along with their autographs. There are sure to be some surprises, like this Harper card, but I’d expect most players to focus on career- or sport-related inscriptions. Notables here include Buster Posey, Clayton Kershaw, David Wright, Josh Hamilton, Justin Verlander, Matt Kemp, Mike Trout and Yu Darvish.

—

Five Star retired autographs (42 signers; one per pack) — This is the crop of signers that has the most upside in MLB history. It’s also a tougher selection of players to make value-wise as there are plenty of notable players who have signed plenty of cards in the past 20 years or so. More than half of the players are Hall of Famers.

At the top of this list are Hank Aaron, Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Stan Musial, Nolan Ryan, Ernie Banks, Cal Ripken Jr. and Ken Griffey Jr. Other notables include Carl Yastrzemski, Frank Robinson, Mike Schmidt, Rickey Henderson, Reggie Jackson and Tom Seaver.

Value-wise, lesser players that will be found here include Bill Buckner, Dave Kingman, George Bell, John Kruk, Luis Tiant, Ken Griffey Sr., Robin Ventura and Vida Blue.

—

Five Star Quotable retired (20 players) — This set also includes inscriptions along with autographs and it includes 14 Hall of Famers. Players not in the Hall who signed here include Dale Murphy, Frank Thomas (1990s), John Kruk, John Smoltz, Ken Griffey Jr. and fan favorite Will Clark.

Among the biggest names adding extra ink are Cal Ripken Jr., Ernie Banks, Ken Griffey Jr., Nolan Ryan and Rickey Henderson. It should be interesting to see how lively the extra notations do — or don’t — get with veteran signers.

—

Five Star Silver-ink autographs (active and retired; 49 players) — This is the largest checklist and it probably has the largest number of cheaper autograph inclusions in Five Star’s basic ink selection. However, it also includes a few signers not appearing in any of the other previously mentioned sets, too.

New names here include R.A. Dickey, Hanley Ramirez, Carlos Gonzalez, Chris Sale, George Foster, Freddie Freeman, Jeremy Hellickson and Terry Pendleton. Meanwhile, there are still eight Hall of Famers to be found here: Sandy Koufax, Jim Rice, Jim Palmer, Juan Marichal, Fergie Jenkins, Dennis Eckersley, Billy Williams and Andre Dawson.

Other notable sigs here value-wise will include Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Trout, though it’s important to note that with lesser quantities and a high-end brand that many may not break wax for, the market just might be quite brisk for even lesser names. There also appears to be a rarer gold-ink version of this set.

—

Five Star Autograph Relics (44 players; one per pack) — This crop combines active and retired players. Only 14 players here are not active and, of those, only five are not Hall of Famers.

Notable ink will include Hank Aaron and Stan Musial leading off the Hall of Fame pack with 1980s greats Tony Gwynn and Ryne Sandberg following.

The active-player crop includes a mix of rookies and veterans with a few more players not yet previously seen on the checklist, including Felix Hernandez, Brandon Phillips, Gio Gonzalez and Justin Upton. Notable active autos to be found here, value-wise, include Albert Pujols and Bryce Harper. Overall, it’s a deep list with plenty of guys who have signed.

—

Five Star Autograph Patch Relics (20 players) — This crop includes only active guys, according to the checklist. It’s heavy on youth with Bryce Harper, Yoenis Cespedes and Trevor Bauer representing for rookies, while younger talents include Brett Lawrie, David Freese, Giancarlo Stanton and Starlin Castro. Veterans in this one are still a bit on the younger side with Justin Verlander, Matt Kemp, Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and Clayton Kershaw among them.

—

AUTOGRAPHED BOOKLETS

—

Three-piece Signatures (five cards) — New Yorkers make up almost half of the set here with David Wright and Don Mattingly heading off the list, while Ryan Braun is the only other active player. Hall of Famers Stan Musial and Mike Schmidt round out the list.

—

Four-piece Signatures (six cards) — These cards will be rarer but the player selection is sweeter. Your likely worst autographs will be of Evan Longoria and Josh Hamilton (not bad), while Justin Verlander, Mike Trout, Yu Darvish pave the way before Willie Mays.

—

Autographed Jumbo Relic (five cards) — These big swatches will include Bryce Harper and Sandy Koufax, who will make the biggest noise when pulled. Others won’t be as crazy as they’re Jered Weaver, Jose Bautista and Matt Holliday.

—

Dual Signatures (32 cards) — These will pair players from the past and present for one team in many instances, a checklist that leads off with George Bell and Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays, for example. While some players here might not ignite bidding wars on their own, pairing a team’s stars from the past and present (or in some cases just the past or present) in one booklet could be interesting to watch.

One of the best combos here is a Seattle Mariners Ken Griffey booklet featuring Senior and Junior, who briefly played together. Others of note include Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, Trout and Bryce Harper (a Rookie of the Year catch-all?) as well as a Nolan Ryan and Yu Darvish card.

Another card to watch, one for fans of Cuban baseball, is a Yoenis Cespedes-Aroldis Chapman, while curious ones pair Ryan Braun with MVP award runner-up Matt Kemp and the Yankees’ Robinson Cano with Boston’s Dustin Pedroia.

—

Dual Signatures Patch (28 cards) — This lineup swaps out simple jersey pieces for patches while also mixing up some of the combinations.

Cool ones here will include Yu Darvish and Josh Hamilton, Darvish and Bryce Harper, Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw, Albert Pujols and Mike Trout, Buster Posey and Willie McCovey as well as Posey with Joe Mauer. Some of the combos here seem less compelling, likely because of available memorabilia limitations.

—

Quadragraph book (10 cards) — These are what they sound like … a card with four signatures. It appears this set will be skip-numbered (some players perhaps couldn’t be nailed down post-printing) but some of the inclusions are pretty impressive.

For the Oakland A’s fan, the checklist leads off with a Dennis Eckersley, Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson and Vida Blue combo. That’s 75 percent Hall of Famers, but it may not compare to the rookie power found on a YuDarvish-Mike Trout-Yoenis Cespedes-Jesus Montero card or a Cubs classic with Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Billy Williams and Andre Dawson (all HOFers).

These should impress.

—

Six-signature books (five cards) — Yep, six. These, too, are also skip-numbered. This time, the players are all grouped by position or theme. One card that will eventually have six Hall of Famer autos on it is a Rickey Henderson, Tony Gwynn Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson, Frank Robinson and Ken Griffey Jr.

Another card here has Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Roy Halladay, Sandy Koufax, Justin Verlander and Clayton Kershaw, while yet another is a rookie special that should blow some people away … Mike Trout, Yoenis Cespedes, Trevor Bauer, Bryce Harper, Matt Moore and Yu Darvish — all on one card.

—

Eight-signature books (three cards) — Eight is enough in this one and 24 sigs on three cards will comprise this entire set. The first? A rookie special starting with Bauer and ending with Trout and Harper. The second? A sluggers vs. aces combo including Braun and Pujols as well as Kershaw, Halladay and Verlander. The last card? All Hall of Famers (once Griffey is in): Aaron, Gwynn, Billy Williams, Mays, Frank Robinson, Reggie Jackson. As the Rip Master says, “Wow.”

—

Logoman dual autographs (25 cards) — You know that single MLB logo on the back collar of a uniform? Take that from two notable players’ gamers and put it in a booklet and sign them.

That’s what’s going to be found.

Some of the notables? Miguel Cabrera-Prince Fielder, Josh Hamilton-Yu Darvish, Josh Hamilton-Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman-Bryce Harper and Mike Trout-Albert Pujols to name a few.

—

Cut Signatures (30 cards) — You can’t have the legends who aren’t with us any longer without leftover stickers or cuts. Here, we have cuts. In fact, we have Babe Ruth, six different Mickey Mantles and Joe DiMaggio here — bonafide big sigs.

However, there are also a lot of sigs that simply aren’t money sigs if not found in limited cuts. (That’s something not unique to Five Star.) Among them are Bob Lemon, Bobby Thomson, George Kell, Enos Slaughter, Lou Boudreau and Rick Ferrell — all guys who signed steadily through the mail for free a decade or two ago.

Other interesting or notable inclusions on this one are Baby Doll Jacobson, Harry Danning, Johnny Vander Meer, Robin Roberts, Willie Stargell and Warren Spahn.

—

That’s it for the ink, which should be found roughly four times a box in Five Star. Overall, there should be some amazing inclusions but it will be tough to temper expectations as it’s not going to be easy for the outrageous to appear out of every single box — even at $500 a pop. But if you want a chance at the big stuff? A box is your chance.

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary

If you’ve collected for any amount of time, you’ve probably had the moment where you sit back, look at all of the hot mess that is your collection and wondered what your focus is.

Wait, it’s just me? Ok, I’ll go along with that … but we all know better.

As I pondered a column topic for an upcoming Beckett Baseball, I turned to the Hall of Fame — the simple idea of writing about notable sigs I don’t have. It was to be a woe-is-me approach — more like confession — of how I am lacking some notable signatures in my collection, particularly given my supposed collecting focus (well, at least one of them … one that has been around for a long, long time).

Instead, I actually surprised myself — while still realizing that, yes, I am lacking some notable sigs.

I’ve never focused on collecting autographs of baseball’s Hall of Famers — instead acquiring decent autographs at decent prices when they presented themselves, hunting sigs one old-fashioned way or finding autographs in packs. Years ago, that hunting meant trying for autographs of big names through the mail — baseball and otherwise — and, back then, it worked pretty well.

Between all sports — and non-sports, too, I easily have a few thousand sigs. Or at least it might seem that way. Besides being too undisciplined to intently focus on just one niche over a long period of time, I’m also not much of a sorter. My autographs and memorabilia cards are separate from other stuff but that’s it. (I’m missing that one “collecting gene” that must have everything in an orderly place.)

Despite my haphazard ways, I surprised myself when I quickly tallied my Hall of Fame autograph total, mentally checking off those I have and those I don’t. Again, despite never trying to actively seek out players, I have 41 of the 297 members of the Hall — mostly players but a couple of others. It’s a total that is far from Hall of Fame worthy — probably downright laughable for some of you Hall 0f Fame-focused fans with deeper pockets — but it’s a reflection of 25 years of having fun, moving from interest to interest within the hobby, not worrying about making a buck. I collect for fun based on what I can afford.

Many of my Hall of Famers came via through-the-mail requests — guys like Richie Ashburn, Kirby Puckett and Eddie Mathews who often signed for the price of a stamp but are no longer here. Then there are the certifieds of the Hank Aarons (added just this year), Whitey Fords, Harmon Killebrews, Frank Robinsons (1994 Nabisco, baby!) and Barry Larkins of the world who I found inside packs or got via mail-in offers. That’s another way — perhaps the most-common way — I found them. Then, of course, there are the guys who I picked up on signed baseballs through the years — Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton, Paul Molitor, to name a few. That was before I realized I just don’t have the patience — or space — for storing a bunch of single-signed balls and the dangers of fading and leather blotches. Some of them came from the JCPenney Christmas catalog while others were picked up in trades with what went out of my collection long, long forgotten.

Oddly, though, none of my Hall of Famer autographs have been acquired in-person — perhaps a sign of how big the autograph industry has become during my collecting years (1987 to today). While I have met many a legend in other sports and gotten sigs in-person from some of them, oddly the sport I follow the most hasn’t created a moment. Well, unless, you count my recent encounter with Reggie Jackson — but all I got there was a single photograph and I wasn’t even thinking about ink.

The invention of the cut autograph allowed me to add a Joe DiMaggio sig straight from a pack a few years ago, but oddly he’s probably my least-favorite Yankees hitting legend of the bunch and yet the only autograph I have. Taking a different approach — winning a Twitter contest — allowed me to add a Goose Gossage autograph. (Not one I really ever would have sought out. I just got lucky.)

I’ll undoubtedly have more Hall of Famer autographs in my collection in the coming years as my generation’s stars are up for election — well, at least they’ll have a chance to be elected from the wreckage of the steroid era. Optimistically, my stats will look better with age even if I don’t add a single sig starting tomorrow.

Oh, and that confession part? Well, I’m a long-time A’s fan and I still haven’t tracked down a Rickey Henderson or a Reggie (not sure I would now). Other big names from modern times? Mickey Mantle? Nope, never forked over the cash. Bob Gibson? I should have — he’s too affordable considering his on-mound dominance. Cal Ripken Jr.? Nope — always wanted a signed 1989 Fleer Billy Ripken instead. Henderson will likely be next — but like much of my collecting habits, there’s not really a target item or date in sight.

Heck, here’s the biggest revelation of them all — the most-shocking thing I realized when I mentally worked through my Hall of Fame autograph collection.

I don’t even own a Bob Feller … and he signed everything.
