Panini America is starting up the crusades again.

The company previewed 2013 Rookies & Stars Football today, showing off its inserts and hits including Crusade cards, which is set to come out in late August.

“For starters, there’s the return to glory of the landmark Crusade insert, which will bring back the authentic hypnotic designs and printing technology that made those original 1998 gems instant classics,” Panini’s Tracy Hackler wrote on the company blog.

Rookies & Stars debuted 15 years ago and Panini is bringing back some of what collectors enjoyed about the set.

Each hobby box will contain 24 packs with eight cards in each pack, including at least one Rookie Card.

Two Crusades cards will be in every hobby box, on average. Crusades will be featured with different colored parallels numbered to either 99, 49, five or one.

In addition to Crusade, Panini is returning:

- Rookie Premiere Slideshow Signatures (numbered to 125 or less)
- Team Chemistry dual-signed cards (numbered to 99 or less)
- Rookie Materials Signatures (Longevity and Team Logo foil background parallels available)
- Game Plan insert
- Touchdown Club insert

Panini will add some new elements as well, including Cross Training Materials with standard and prime material inserts featuring top performers from the NFL Combine.

The NFLPA Rookie Premiere is underway this week in Los Angeles with 40 NFL rookies checking out their newest trading cards.

The players are signing cards for upcoming products and making their rounds, including ESPN broadcasts and meeting with dealers and fans.

Five rookies were with Panini America promoting the company’s cards on Thursday. Beckett Media had a chance to talk to Mike Glennon, Tavon Austin, E.J. Manuel, Marcus Lattimore and Denard Robinson.

Beckett: How did it feel seeing your Rookie Card for the first time?

Glennon: It was pretty cool. As a kid I collected and I always envisioned myself on a card one day. Now, you finally get to see yourself on one. You’re living out a dream as a kid.

Manuel: When I got my first shipment of cards, I was like “Wow, this is really starting to happen. I’m in the NFL.”

Robinson: It’s ridiculous. It’s crazy. You grow up collecting cards then to see myself on one is a dream come true. I used to collect some baseball and football cards. I used to say (I would be on a card) to my friends and brothers.

Lattimore: You know, it hasn’t sunk in yet. I collected cards when I was a kid. I had all the running backs. I had Barry Sanders, a bunch of different guys. It’s crazy just seeing myself on a card.

Austin: It’s one of the best feelings in my life. You see your name on the screen for the draft and then you see yourself on a card, the way you saw yourself as a kid. It’s one of the best feelings.

Beckett: Did you have you a card collection?

Glennon: I was a pretty big football and basketball guy. I had binders full of them. My mom complained they took up too much space. I loved collecting Michael Jordan. In football, I collected Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, guys of that generation. I used all my allowance buying cards.

Lattimore: I had a lot of baseball cards. If there was one guy I had to have, it was Rickey Henderson. I had a card from every year he had one. That was my favorite.

Beckett: What has the Rookie Premiere been like?

Glennon: I am really looking forward to Saturday when I put on the Tampa Bay Bucs uniform for the first time. It was cool seeing the cards because they Photoshopped me in uniform and I haven’t even seen myself in uniform yet. It’s been something I’ve been looking forward to.

Robinson: It’s fun. I’ve got to meet so many players and just talk to them. I also get to see how their Rookie Cards look.

Lattimore: It’s my first time in Los Angeles. The food is great. It’s definitely exciting to be working with Panini and learning the business side of things.

Beckett: What did you think of the types of cards being made?

Manuel: I was a little surprised. I saw little stitches from jerseys and they put a game jersey into a card because then I had to sign it. There are a lot of newer cards out there.

Austin: I was shocked to see myself in uniform. To see what people can do with computers these days. It’s crazy how they make things happen. But I definitely look good in it.

Beckett: Are you going to collect your own Rookie Cards?

Robinson: Oh yeah. Of course, I am going to get some. I got my first set of Rookie Cards right now. It’s amazing to see all the stuff going in them.

Lattimore: No doubt. You know how I collected all those other guys? Well, I am going to collect these guys’ cards (players at Rookie Premiere). I can say I met them and played with them.

If you thought Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck autograph cards were going to try dry up this season, don’t worry.

Topps previewed 2013 Topps Chrome Football showing off base cards, inserts, and autographs – with Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck sandwiched between the rookies on the autograph checklist.

Chrome is usually known for having all rookie autographs, but perhaps Topps changed it up in attempt to re-capture last year’s excitement along with bolstering a rookie class that is short on hype.

There will be one on-card rookie autograph in every hobby box. Each pack will contain four cards, including one Rookie Card, and each hobby box will have 24 packs.

The Rookie Autographs will feature up to 45 different players, most likely the players that will appear at the NFL Players’ Association Rookie Premiere next week. There will be eight refractor parallels: Refractor (numbered to 150), Military (/99), BCA (/75), Black (/25), Prism (/15), Gold (/10), Red (/5) and Superfractor (1-of-1).

Collectors will also be able to find Rookie Autographs Patches (hobby only), Dual and Tripe Autographs. In addition, Rookie Autographs Variations are back again.

Topps is going into its history once again featuring players on former designs – many of which are highlighted in the upcoming 2013 Topps Archives football.

The inserts include the 1956, 1959, 1969 and 1986 football designs. These designs will also have parallels and on-card autographs variations.

Chrome Rookie Die-Cuts are inserts with a new design.

The base set will consist of 220 cards with 111 veteran subjects and 109 rookies. Thirty veteran cards will feature photo variations and 25 rookie will get the same treatment. And the parallels are extensive for the base set:

- Refector (1 in three packs)
- Blue Wave Refractor
- Military (numbered to 499)
- BCA (pink, numbered to 399)
- Prism (Hobby only)
- Black (numbered to 299)
- Blue (numbered to 199)

Panini America is bringing back Momentum for the 2013 season with a few tweaks in design.

Momentum will still have one hit in every pack. But the way the cards look – more color and different artwork will stand out to collectors.

2013 Momentum Football is schedule to release in late July with 10 hits (at least half will be autographs) and 10 Rookie Cards in every box.

The RPS Rookie Cards will feature three pieces of memorabilia with an autograph numbered to 399 or less. Panini is revamping the look of the RPS Rookie Cards from last season with holographic foil and full-body photography.

In addition, inserts include:
-Class Reunion Combos: Autographs cards that bring together members of past drafts.
-Double Feature and Triple Feature: Prime memorabilia pieces
-Rookie Team Threads
-Studs: The return of the black-and-white portrait photos featuring a diamond on a card.

Non-traditional relics will be on display in October when 2013 Topps Prime comes out.

The relics will feature different items such as wristbands, gloves and even socks.

Each Topps Prime box will have 10 five-card packs, which will have at least one Rookie Card.

In addition, each box will have one autograph, one autograph relic and two relic cards.

There will be five levels of Prime autographed relics with up to six relic pieces of different memorabilia such as gloves, socks, jerseys, footballs and wristbands. The Prime relics also come in five different parallels that are hobby exclusives: Copper (numbered to 50), Gold (#’d to 25), Copper Rainbow (#’d to 15), Silver Rainbow (#’d to 10) and Gold Rainbow (1-of-1).

The rookie autographs will also feature photo variations of up to 40 subjects that also have five parallels.

Several veterans will also get autographed photo variations. Up to 25 subjects will be featured with five parallels, which can be found in retail and hobby except for Gold Rainbow 1-of-1 that are hobby only.

Prime Relics will come in many forms: Dual Relic, Quad Relic, Dual Combo Relic (a rookie and veteran on one card), Quad Combo Relic and single Relics.

Topps will highlight three inserts with Primetimers, Primed Rookies and Prime Performance.

The base set will consist of 150 cards with 100 veterans and 50 rookies. All parallels are exclusive to hobby packs, and rookie photos will differ from hobby and retail.

Any fans out there plan on collecting cards of Leon Sandcastle, the fictitious football player from a Super Bowl commercial played by Deion Sanders?

The chase just might get bigger.

Topps revealed on Twitter its own Sandcastle card that will be in 2013 Bowman football, scheduled to come out June 6.

No word yet if Sandcastle will be short-printed or a regular card in the set.

Panini America announced last week Sandcastle cards would be inserted into 2013 Score retail packs and autographs would be placed in 2013 Prestige hobby packs.

For a character in a commercial, Sandcastle has gotten more buzz than any of the actual rookies from the 2013 NFL Draft.

If there’s one thing I’ve come to  appreciate more and more over the last few years at Beckett Media, it’s the tales of collectors — specifically, those of SuperCollectors who clearly are so focused on their niche that only one word applies.

Insanity.

And it’s a good thing. Imagine my thoughts today as I dipped into the SuperCollector mailbag and saw that we didn’t really have too many new and amazing entries piled up from the last few weeks.

I did the only sane thing I should do … I went and found this Larry Bird card and am randomly giving it away to one SuperCollector who submits all the necessary info between now and July 1.

The card is an impressive one — and we’ll make sure it’s in someone’s hands … as long as they submit their info about their collection.

How can it be yours? Read the instructions on submitting your SuperCollector info (any sport, any player, any niche)  … after the jump.

How can you be a SuperCollector? Your instructions …  read them carefully!

You don’t have to have the most-expensive collection on the block but it needs to be unique — downright crazy — in some way that it stands out.

1. Name, age, your email address, your location (state) and who/what you collect.

2. Statistics about your collection (total cards, number of 1/1s, number of autographs, number of game-used cards or items, etc., as seen on the examples seen here).

SPx Football will have a new look for 2013. Upper Deck is changing the way collectors get their cards from the popular brand.

The re-configured 2013 SPx Football will have 10 packs per box with five cards in each pack. There will be four hits in every hobby box with at least three autographs. Collectors will also find six inserts in each box.

The base set consists of 50 regular cards in addition to SPx Rookie Auto Jerseys (numbered to 475 or less) and 60 SPx Rookie Signatures (numbered to 299).

The June product will also see the return of 1996 and 1997 SPx hologram card designs with gold parallels numbered to five. Other inserts include SPx Finite Rookies and SPx Finite Legends.

SPx Shadowbox cards are back again, a popular card among collectors. Upper Deck spices things up with two players on one shadowbox with rare autographed versions.

In addition, Upper Deck will include four UD Premier bonus packs in every case. Each pack will have a UD Premier Autograph Jersey or Patch card featuring 2013 rookies and football legends. All cards are numbered to 125 or less.
