The NFL Players Rookie Premiere starts today in Los Angeles.

Why is it so important?

This is where the card companies – in this case, Topps and Panini America – get photos, autographs and event-used memorabilia for all of the Rookie Cards in this upcoming season’s products.

Without this event, the card companies would have to go to all the 32 different teams to get this many top rookies in one place.

About 35 rookies will be at the event, including 11 first-round draft picks such as Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Trent Richardson, who were the first three picks of the draft.

Saturday is one of the biggest and fun days for the companies. The players arrive at the Rose Bowl to take pictures: action shots and a photo shoot in their NFL uniforms.

Check out the video up top with Panini’s Tracy Hackler getting a few minutes with Griffin before the start of the event.

Here’s a list of all the players that are attending the event, according to Panini America:

Players have been instructed several times that they SHOULD NOT tweet pics of themselves or others trying on the massive amount of “event worn” jerseys. That was a major black eye for the industry last year and they believe the average collector is dumb enough to forget what they’ve seen…

I don’t know if pointless is the right word, Bobby. In fact, this list of names gives collectors a pretty good idea of whose on-card autographs to look for first when those early product release. And then there’s the fact that information is just generally a good thing.

I like RG3s idea for a picture. A QB throwing a block would be kinda dope
