With a new season comes a new group of players — and probably some old ones, too — new hopes, new stars and, of course, some new memorabilia.

While thumbing through the Spring 2009 MLB.com catalog, yours truly found something that stood out from the team-branded clothes, autographs, framed displays and, of course, trading cards.

What stood out?

The Chorizo bobblehead doll from Forever Collectibles. (He’s at right — or on Page 18 for those scoring at home.)

That’s right, among the buying choices are bobblehead dolls for one of the richest traditions in all of sports — no, not the hot dog at a game — but the epic battle that plays out at every Brewers game between five of the biggest players around.

The Sausage Race.

It stars The Bratwurst, The Polish Sausage, The Italian Sausage, The Hot Dog and The Chorizo.

They’ve all raced to be top dog since 2000 — even coming into the national spotlight with The Italian Job in July 2003 when player Randall Simon whacked The Italian Sausage with a baseball bat during the race and was suspended. (I own one of his certified autograph cards — do you?)

But now you can have them all to yourself as they all can be yours in bobblehead form for $18.99 apiece over at MLB.com. (I know, I know, so few of you can relish the thought of actually owning them all.)

The first race of the season doesn’t take place until Friday evening as the Brewers open their home schedule against the Cubs at 3:05 p.m. in Miller Park. Until the, you can read up on the competitors here.

Surprisingly the Brewers don’t keep stats on the race winners. My money is on The Italian Sausage in the opener, though it’s pretty evident that the Best Bobblehead Award goes to The Chorizo.
