I agree with Mario. I was excited to see Chris hired by Beckett, for it brought (I thought) a real blogger into the fold, but the box breaks, etc. etc., has made this seem too much like advertisements for cards and not a real journalistic look at the business. I’ll reserve my judgment for when Chris is in the position for longer, however.
Multimedia is one very large component of journalism these days. Traffic reports say that readers love images and box breaks — therefore I give them what they want.

By the way, I approved that message in an effort of transparency.
But for the record, I graduated cum laude from the University of Alabama College of Communication in 2000 (I have the training), and I have had a successful journalism career. So I like to think I know what I’m doing, too.
Those Donruss Threads “Kings” are U-G-L-Y. Yuck. And didn’t we already see the autographs? Wasn’t it called 2002 Donruss The Rookies?
The signed manufactured patch cards are really starting to annoy me, and this is not just a slam on DLP. The signatures always look cramped, if not just flat out ugly. I’d prefer they create that set without the signatures and find a way to make the autos on-card. The Letterman-type set is cool because it looks like you’ve got a nameplate. The signatures just drive the prices through the roof while adding almost nothing to the eye-appeal.
In any product there are sets that don’t necessarily impress — but there are a lot of people with a lot of tastes out there. What you hate someone else might love.
So the real question would be this — would you rather have the companies try some things and add some different sets or not put them in at all?
The rookie checklist is an interesting one — but that could make it a great set or a bad set a few years from now. You just never know.
