The 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. autographed buyback winner is …
We’ve selected the winner of the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. autographed buyback Rookie Card.
The winner is Dave Villanova from Yorkville, Ill.
Here’s a portion of the story he included as his entry:
“It’s Christmas Eve of 1991. I am 8 years old. I open the last present of the night from my uncle Vince and to my great surprise it is the set — 1989 Upper Deck baseball. I was so happy to finally get the most important card and set of my (at that time) short-lived collection. However, when I opened that nice blue box, to my surprise I found something very different.
“It was a Barbie doll.
“Now, this was not your average Barbie doll. The doll had Barbie’s body with Ken’s head on it and an extra arm under her dress. Immediately, my whole family started laughing, while I started crying hysterically. Feeling embarrassed and angry, I threw the doll at my uncle. It missed him but struck and broke an ornament on our tree.
“Once the family’s fun was over, my uncle pointed to the coffee table. To my relief, I saw Griffey’s greatest card and the rest of the set under the table.”
Congratulations to Dave.

We’ll be bringing another chance for a lucky Beckett reader to win the card below — a 1993 Upper Deck Derek Jeter autographed buyback Rookie Card. Those can be found in boxes of Upper Deck Series 2, which releases later this month. Like the Griffey RC, it’s been slabbed in a BGS holder noting it being a prize.
Look for details on how you can win in upcoming issues of Beckett Sports Card Monthly and Beckett Baseball.

Chris,
I like the looks of the Topps Heritage cards and have been purchasing these cards exclusively this year. In terms of value, what 2009 baseball cards would you recommend? Thank you!
