Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was found dead at a home in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on Monday, the victim of a stabbing wound. He was 24.

Halman’s 22-year-old brother was taken into custody for questioning.

In his second season with the Mariners, Halman hit .230 with tw0 home runs and six RBI in 35 games. He hit .299 with three homers and 15 RBI this season in limited action at Triple-A Tacoma. For his career, he was a .251 hitter over seven minor-league seasons with 118 home runs, 332 RBI and 109 stolen bases.

Halman appears on 255 baseball cards in the Beckett.com database with seven of those Rookie Cards and 72 of them autographed. His also appears on 10 memorabilia cards and 201 of his cards are serial-numbered.

His Rookie Cards are found in 2011 products with his most-valuable RC being his 2011 Topps Gypsy Queen card, which typically sold for $6 or less before the news. Meanwhile, his first autographed cards were found in 2008 sets from Topps, Donruss and Razor. His most valuable signed card from that year typically has been his Playoff Contenders Season Ticket Autograph, which was limited to just 88 copies and typically sold for $60 or less.

In a statement, MLBPA executive director Michael Weiner praised Halman as a player whose international legacy won’t be forgotten.

“Greg was passionate about the game of baseball and generously gave of himself to share his passion with others in an attempt to help grow the sport’s popularity across Europe,” he said. “He will be sorely missed.  Having played for the Netherlands in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, and having participated in the recent 2011 European Big League Tour, Greg’s lasting legacy is sure to be the trail he helped blaze for European youth to follow in his footsteps.”

May he rest in peace, my prayers with the family, and may the person who stabbed him be caught and brought to justice.
