On the surface, 2016 Bowman Chrome Baseball has a lot of the familiar elements that the brand is known for. Prospects and autographs are the major hooks still. But, just as Topps hinted at the 2016 Industry Summit, the box configurations have been overhauled. Hobby boxes now come packaged with a pair of mini boxes. The product also marks the return of vending boxes.

2016-Bowman-Chrome-Baseball-Header

Hobby boxes, which have a total of 12 packs, come with a pair of autographs. Vending boxes don’t have packs. Rather it’s a return to the fast-opening packaging that was common in the 1980s and early 1990s. These have 88 cards including three autographs, five exclusive Refractors and a few other things that aren’t available elsewhere.

Base Set and Prospect Cards

2016 Bowman Chrome Baseball Base

The actual base set for 2016 Bowman Chrome Baseball is all veterans and rookies. There’s also the separate Prospects portion of the product that has 100 cards.

As usual, both have an extensive lineup of Refractor parallels. Basic Refractors aren’t serial numbered but the color versions all are. They come in Purple, Blue, Green (hobby only), Gold, Orange (/25, hobby only), Red (/5) and Superfractor (1/1). Each card also has four different one-of-one Printing Plates.

In addition to these, Prospects have a few more Refractors. New Black and Gold Refractors are only included in the vending boxes. Blue Shimmer Refractors are in randomly inserted hot packs exclusive to hobby boxes. Orange Shimmer Refractors are also hot pack exclusives, except these are only in vending boxes.

Autographs

2016 Bowman Chrome Baseball Prospect Autograph Vladimir Guerrero Jr

Prospect Autographs remain the cornerstone of 2016 Bowman Chrome Baseball. Once again, they’re all signed on-card. Parallels include Refractors, Blue Refractors, Green Refractors, Gold Refractors, Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5), Superfractors (1/1) and Printing Plates. Of these, there are a couple of exclusives. Orange Refractors are only in hobby boxes. If you want a Gold Refractor Autograph, vending boxes are the lone place to find them.

Rookie Autographs cover key players already in the majors. These have a similar parallel setup as the Prospect Autographs except the Gold Refractors aren’t a vending box exclusive.

Prime Position Autographs highlight top young players at various positions. Numbered Green Refractors, Gold Refractors, Orange Refractors (/25, hobby-exclusive) and Superfractors are also available.

Carrying on with the AFLAC tradition are All-America Game Autographs. These were signed by prospects while they were still in high school. The result can sometimes lead to different signatures than they use today.

Memorabilia Cards

2016 Bowman Chrome Baseball AFL Fall Stars Game Relic Superfractor

Jerseys and other types of memorabilia cards have never found much of a foothold in Bowman Chrome. This set is no different. In fact, 2015 AFL Fall Stars Game Relics are the only such cards in the product. Exclusive to hobby boxes, these use a variety of pieces from the Arizona Fall League game including hats, bats and bases.

Orange Refractors (/25) and Superfractors (1/1) are the parallels.

Inserts

2016 Bowman Chrome Baseball Refractors That Never Were

AFL Fall Stars Game highlight top players from the prospect game held last November. Some of these feature low-numbered parallels that have autographs. AFL Fall Stars Game inserts are found only in hobby packs.

Out of the Gate is another hobby-exclusive. These highlight 2016 rookies that got off to strong starts at the beginning of the season.

Bowman Scouts’ Updates spotlight minor league players who also started 2016 well in their respective leagues. Autographed parallels exist as do a handful of Refractors: Blue, Gold, Orange (/25) and Superfractor (1/1).

While most of the inserts in 2016 Bowman Chrome Baseball look to the future, there’s one that goes in the opposite direction. Refractors That Never Were reprint old Bowman cards of retired stars as though they were one of the popular parallels. Select cards have autographed versions as well.

It seems like every year Topps creates new complicated processes of figuring out bowman chrome, bowman, and bowman draft. Why not KISS (keep it simple stupid), this is becoming more and more irritating almost to the point I just want to give up altogether

Vending boxes will likely make the box breaker crowd happy since they can save the time. If Topps does a wrapper redemption program people are likely to be less happy.

In over 30 years this is the 1st time I have ever heard of vending boxes…am I ignorant or is this an east coast thing?

They were used for a lot of products in the 1980s and early 1990s. They were similar in packaging to a factory set minus the wrap. And instead of a full set, it was a mix of cards, usually 500 I believe. The intent was to use them to easily load dispensers, although over the years people have used them to find gum stain-less cards also.

Thanks for the explanation. I started collecting in the mid-80’s which is why I was surprised I never came across any vending boxes.

Did they release what the size of the base would be? Also will the be like last years Bowman Chrome where it is kind of like Bowman update, with different players in the base set?

Warning: This product is garbage. Two boxes, four nobody autographs (cannot sell for 99 cents) and zero color, plus lots of pointless inserts, as usual. Stay away!

I bought six boxes at one time over 50 percent of cards duplicated, quality control? Ripoff product!!
