Beckett.com Hot List
The Beckett editors review who's impacting the sports collecting hobby. |
- Tiger Woods
- It was a Tiger night at the ESPY's, with the golfing sensation taking home the Best Male Athlete, Best Male Golfer and Record-Breaking Performance trophies.
- Barry Bonds
- Meanwhile, not surprisingly, Barry Bonds won the Best MLB player and best moment, for breaking Mark McGwire's homerun record.
- Marshall Faulk
- Six other candidates were nominated, but it was Faulk who took home the ESPY Award for Best NFL Player. He led the NFL in scoring in 2001, totaling 2,147 yards from scrimmage.
- Tom Brady
- It probably wasn’t much of a surprise, at least to football fans anyway. Brady won the Best Breakthrough Athlete at the ESPYs for leading the New England Patriots to a Super Bowl victory.
- Shaquille O'Neal
- The Big Man earned his second Best NBA Player ESPY in a row, beating out teammate Kobe Bryant, as well as a few guys named Kidd, Duncan, and Iverson.
- Jarome Iginla
- Small consolation for losing the NHL's MVP award to Jose Theodore, but Iginla did take home the Best NHL Player ESPY for his scoring prowess last season.
- Lisa Leslie
- The ladies were honored in many ESPY categories, with tennis star Venus Williams taking home best female athlete. But as far as sports collectibles go, WNBA forward Lisa Leslie rules, and was awarded the Best WNBA ESPY.
- Derek Jeter
- Remember that great shovel throw Jeter made on an errant play in Game 3 of 2001 AL Divisional Series? It earned him the ESPY for Best Play Wednesday night.
- Michael Schumacher
- Schumacher won his fourth world driver’s crown in 2001, setting a record for career Grand Prix wins, a fact which apparently put him over the edge in ESPY voting for Best Driver.
- Phil Jackson
- Best Coach ESPY after guiding his L.A. Lakers to a three-peat? Well, duh.

Would Richie Sexson have made the All-Star Team roster had he not been playing in the host city of Milwaukee? Well, it's hard to say. While his Brewers stew in baseball's basement, Sexson continues to try and overcome. He is
currently batting .280 and has 18 homers for the year. This big guy (he's 6'8") is immensely talented, still young, and very powerful - keep an eye on him over All-Star Weekend. Richie Sexson collectibles in the Beckett Marketplace range in price from $.05 to around $50.

Wow, is it just us, or do those early pictures of Curtis Joseph wearing the Red Wings' red and white really look good? But for whoever didn't see that transaction coming...hello? Cujo was clearly the goalie of choice among those available, and Detroit was clearly going to go for him,
given the recent post-Stanley Cup retirement of Dominik Hasek. Nearly a no-brainer: the Wings repeat as Cup champs. Curtis Joseph cards guarding the Beckett Marketplace net range in price from $.09 to just over $250.

Running back Lamar Gordon, the St. Louis Rams' third-round pick in the April draft and the 84th pick overall, has agreed to a four-year deal.
The team has high hopes for Gordon, as he is expected to push Trung Canidate for the backup spot behind Marshall Faulk. Not a bad position to be in. In four seasons at North Dakota State, Gordon had
4,700 yards rushing and 62 touchdowns, so keep an eye on this youngster. Lamar Gordon collectibles in the Beckett Marketplace are priced between $.50 and just under $40.

Elliott Sadler will be heading for Robert Yates Racing in 2003, but not at the expense of Ricky Rudd's ride. NASCAR.com recently reported Sadler could acquire M&M's sponsorship and become a teammate to Rudd and Dale Jarrett at RYR. Sadler had been
the focus of several rumors since he was released from his contract with Wood Brothers Racing earlier this season. M&M's is currently on the No. 36 Pontiac of Kenny Schrader.
