By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor
Our annual showcase of collectors’ passions is coming soon in the pages of Beckett Sports Card Monthly.
That’s right — The SuperCollector Issue is upon us later this summer.
Now’s the time where we’re seeking all of your stories, your photos and your information. We want you to make your case for being one of the 15 to 20 collectors showcased for the world to see.
Perhaps it’s because of your massive collection of Barry Larkin cards — or perhaps it’s for your stash of hundreds of through-the-mail autographs. Whatever it is that you collect, we want to hear about it, whether it’s baseball, football, basketball or hockey — or any other sport … or non-sports … or whatever you can imagine.
As a new part of this year’s issue, we also want to see how you display your collections — we want to see the best of your fancaves out there as well.
How can you be a SuperCollector or see your fancave showcased in a Beckett magazine? Your instructions are after the jump … read them carefully!

In The Game, Inc., and Sport Kings LP are merging as one company.
The companies owned by Dr. Brian Price were kept separate, but they will now be one, Price announced today.
“By making this acquisition, I will be able to continue the production of the Sport Kings brand as the consolidation of the brand into the ITG family makes it easier to move forward with future releases,” Price said on his blog. “In the past websites, marketing and sales were kept separately causing confusion in the marketplace, this acquisition removes that confusion.”
Price will move forward with the Sportking series releasing Series F this summer before the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago.

Doc Jacobs got his tryout — and now he’s getting a baseball card.
A Purple Heart-honored Navy vet who lost his left leg, toes on his right foot and parts of two fingers in Iraq had a tryout with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Feb. 28 — and now he’ll get his own baseball card from Upper Deck in its retro-styled 2013 Goodwin Champions multi-sport set that arrives on July 9.
Jacobs will be signing 100 copies of the card found in an insert set called Heroic Inspirations.
“When we heard about Doc’s story, we immediately said to ourselves, ‘Now that’s a baseball player we need to make a trading card for,’” said Chris Carlin, sports marketing manager for Upper Deck. “We worked in concert with our great partners at Operation Gratitude and the charity Doc co-founded, VETSports, to make it happen. We couldn’t be more excited to give patriotic Americans the opportunity to collect inspiration.”

Baseball, Multisport, Non-Sports | 2013 Panini Golden Age, 2013 Panini Golden Age checklist, Evel Knievel, horse racing, MLBPA, Panini America, Secretariat, Three Stooges | Comments (2)
The Golden Age has extended itself for at least another year.
Panini America revealed its plans for the sophomore release of its retro-styled baseball card set (one that includes way more than just baseball) on Tuesday as it announced 2013 Panini Golden Age is planned to arrive in June.
A 150-card base set will include stars from the sports world as well as newsmakers from the worlds of politics and pop culture. Each standard card, the company said, will have six mini variations for collectors to chase. Part of that pop culture? The Three Stooges are back once again — this time with a nine-card insert set of their own — as well as other appearances. Also part of the pop culture experience? Comic book icon Stan Lee and actress Bo Derek for starters.

Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Multisport, Non-Sports | MAPP pricing policy, Panini America | Comments (16)
Collectors may see a difference in the price of hobby boxes soon.
Panini America announced the elimination of its MAPP (minimum advertised pricing policy) program, which will begin with the February 27 release of National Treasures baseball.
“The biggest benefit will be market liquidity,” said Panini’s Vice President of Sales D.J. Kazmierczak on Panini’s blog. “That approach will benefit everyone involved because it helps with inventory turns. In addition, this different approach will create more demand for pre-ordering product. That is something that we all prefer.”

Admit it, you’ve been here before — you rip into a pack, see a thick card and that rush of excitement is thwarted by a plain white swatch of a guy you’ve seen a dozen times before.
It doesn’t always have to be that way.
As you’ll see in the next issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly — The Hits Issue — what is a hit can vary from person to person and they can vary even more from product to product. If you dabble in some of the hobby’s multi-sport creations or in the non-sport realm, you can find even more variety in hits.
