Look for a historic Box Busters — 1993 MTG Alpha — soon

By Matt Bible | Beckett Non-Sports and Gaming Analyst | Commentary

On Monday, Beckett Media will bear witness to a monumental occasion.

Magic The Gathering super collector Adam Cai will be breaking open a starter deck from the 1993 MTG Alpha series on a special edition of Box Busters. He will be doing so on behalf of Preston Cordy of Cardhaus Games (check out the official website here).

Magic The Gathering cards debuted in 1993 with three separate series: Alpha, Beta and Unlimited. The three sets paralleled each other and maintain their own distinctive appearance and value.

Magic controversy leads to $14,900 auction

What happens when a professional Magic: The Gathering player pulls a high-profile card during a high-profile tournament deck draft but then decides to not play the card?

Fan fury it seems — and that led to an auction.

The card is a 2015 Magic Modern Masters Foil #166 Tarmogoyf which typically sells for $300 or less per the Beckett OPG. The player is Pascal Maynard and the event was the GP Las Vegas Top Eight.

The final eBay total earlier this week? A mere $14,900 after 61 bids.  Half of the proceeds (if the auction was paid for) were to go to a charity called Gamers Helping Gamers.

Beckett May auction includes Power Nine

Though Beckett Auctions has primarily focused on sport cards and memorabilia in its first year, it has dabbled (and sold) some nice non-sport and gaming items. It’s about time to power-up in that department for the May auction, which begins on Thursday and runs through May 17 at 9 p.m. Central with a 15-minute extended bidding window on certain items. Beckett Auctions will feature several key Magic: The Gathering Alpha and Beta cards, all graded by BGS, which will include every one of The Power Nine cards. Read More »

Contest: Legendary Fear Itself

By Matt Bible | Beckett Non-Sports and Gaming Analyst

The only thing we have to fear…

Upper Deck‘s newest Marvel deck-building game is an expansion of the current Legendary series, which has included titles devoted to such franchises such as Guardians of the Galaxy and The Fantastic 4. However, Fear Itself follows the Marvel story line of the same name and casts you as the villains. Lead such baddies as Kuurth, Breaker of Stone and Greithoth, Breaker of Wills, into battle against your adversaries, which includes heroes such as Iron Man, Dr. Strange, and Spider-Man. The deck includes 100 playable cards, 6 allies, 1 commander, 1 adversary group, 3 new plots and a rule sheet.

Want to win a deck? Simply leave a comment below and tell us what you think of deck-building games. Perhaps you have all of the Legendary series and would like to share your playing experiences. Or, maybe you’re new DBG and would like to know more. We will select three winners before April 1.

Inside this year’s Gaming Almanac + Zoe Saldana contest

By Matt Bible | Beckett Non-Sports and Gaming Analyst | Commentary

The latest Beckett Gaming Almanac is here. Released on Oct. 24, this edition has more info and more pricing — and this was my first crack at editing and developing the content for Beckett’s 5th almanac and I’m happy to give you an inside look.

This edition of the almanac was a Herculean task. We’ve never dealt with so much information in such little time. However, we’re happy to report that you can look forward to a much cleaner, more complete almanac. Some of the features are meant to be more convenient to the reader. This year, we have a much improved guidewords system on each page. It lists the year and name of the product that starts on that particular page. Therefore, it’ll be easier to leaf through and find the sets you need. We’ve also cleaned up the clutter with parallel sets by inserting multipliers in the header of their parent base sets, rather than provide an entirely separate header for said parallel set.
